IAAF PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE MESSAGE DU PRESIDENT DE L’IAAF For the third time after 2004 and 2008, Olympic year is beginning with an edition of the World Indoor Championships. At the Ataköy Athletics Arena, we are bound to see some future Olympic Champions perform the first act of what will be a stupendous year for them. In 2004, eight athletes who took world indoor gold in Budapest in March went on to win again in Athens in August. In 2008, the Valencia/Beijing double was achieved by three athletes (Bryan Clay, Valerie Vili/Adams and Tia Hellebaut), but the list of Valencia winners featured several athletes who also climbed the Olympic podium. We know we are going to see the best in the world in Istanbul, and past statistics will prove this. The point of this book is to provide as much relevant information as possible to those who are following the 14th IAAF World Indoor Championships on site, on line or off-tube. Full results are given of all past 13 editions plus the World Indoor Games of 1985. Included is an exclusive listing of all autonomous IAAF World Championship gold medallists starting with the 1973 World Cross Country Championships. Of course, this list will be out of date after a few hours of action in Istanbul and there would be no better place for the host nation to have their first entry since 2000 world junior hammer throw champion Eşref Apak. We hope this book will give you all the answers you want across the five sessions of action at the championships. It is a product of countless hours of meticulous work by the community of athletics statisticians and in particular members of the Association of Track & Field Statisticians. The IAAF is so grateful to the men and women who devote their time to such projects. Without them it would be impossible to keep track of the wonderful facts and figures thrown up by our sport day by day. Lamine Diack, November 2011

Lamine Diack, novembre 2011

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS REMERCIEMENTS This is the twelth successive statistics handbook I have compiled on behalf of the IAAF for their World Indoor Championships. Every two years, I think there cannot possibly be so many changes, but that is what always happens. The principal update is of course to include results and reports from Doha 2010 as well as two year’s worth of changes to records, lists and biographies. We have added many extra marks from history in the section detailing progressive world bests, including evolution of relay marks set on oversized tracks. For the first time in a statistics handbook for the World Indoor Championships, diacritical marks are widely shown for Eastern European names. I wish to thank the ultra-reliable main contributors and compilers: Ed Gordon, Heinrich Hübbeling, Richard Hymans, Giorgio Malisani, Peter Matthews Thomas Magnusson, and György Csiki. My additional thanks also go to Mirko Jalava, Alfons Juck, and the staff and departments of the IAAF for all their support with this project. Acknowledgments also to www.tilastopaja.net, www.iaaf.org, “Athletics International,” “Athletics Weekly,” “Track & Field News,” Ed Gordon’s TAFWA All-Time Indoor List 2012, ATFS/Peter Matthews Athletics 2011 Mark Butler (Editor) – [email protected] Please send any comments to the address given below.
