Research on challenges in Ecosystem Research Ecosystem Research is increasingly vital to address policy issues facing Europe and the globe : Climate (i.e. temperature, rainfall, increase of the frequency of extreme events…), Biodiversity (i.e. species loss, distribution, invasive species…), Ecosystem services (i.e. carbon sequestration, climate regulation, water storage and provisioning, nutrient cycling…), Food security (increasing population, pollution, crop failure, …) ANAEE Kick-off Meeting, Versailles (14th Nov 2012)

Problems Research gaps Research duplication Insufficient critical mass Lack of multidisciplinarity: separate processes Lack of standardization Lack of technology exchange Lack of analytical capacity Insufficient linkage of data and models Limited stakeholder involvement ….. ANAEE Kick-off Meeting, Versailles (14th Nov 2012)

ANAEE-Flanders supports the esfri ANAEE concept ANAEE brings together the major experimental, analytical and modelling facilities in ecosystem science, agriculture and forestry

ANAEE-Flanders Versatile facility for ecosystem research with 3 complementary components: (1) Ecotrons: climate-controlled units for unraveling complex ecological processes in real-time, through continuous sampling of trace gas fluxes between ecosystems and the atmosphere (CO2, H2O, CH4, N2O, …). Macrocosms and Mesocosms (2) Free-air exposure systems: to simulate climate extremes (heatwaves, droughts) in fully realistic conditions (no enclosure) (3) Aquatic and wetland facilities: from highly instrumented in natura tidal marshes to in vitro wetland mesocosms ANAEE Kick-off Meeting, Versailles (14th Nov 2012)

ANAEE-Flanders

(1) Ecotrons Macrocosms: 12 units to expose larger ecosystems to max. 2 environmental factors. Coupled to ICOS flux tower in a natural ecosystem (esfri ICOS: Integrated Carbon Observing System) Mesocosms: 36 smaller units for multifactorial experiments with up to 4 factors and multiple levels per factor → determine system thresholds and manipulate biodiversity ANAEE Kick-off Meeting, Versailles (14th Nov 2012)

(2) Free-air exposure systems: arrays of infrared heaters to simulate climate extremes (heatwaves, droughts) in the open field → ;pping points for irreversible ecosystem damage ANAEE Kick-off Meeting, Versailles (14th Nov 2012)

8

ANAEE-Flanders (3) Aquatic and wetland facilities: highly instrumented tidal marshes and in vitro wetland mesocosms → buffering capacity under changing hydrological cycle (floods, extreme rainfall) and land use (nutrient input)

ANAEE-Flanders: status on infrastructure/research Aquatic facilities exist in basic form (upgrading) Ecotrons and free-air infrared irradiation facilities: new But IR prototype exists (ExpeER project) Extreme event ecology: developed at UA Modelling activities: terrestrial (FRACPO, ANAFORE, SIMFORTREE, ORCHIDEE) and aquatic (STRIVE, SCHELDE) Participation to ExpeER and ANAEE Preparatory Project ANAEE Kick-off Meeting, Versailles (14th Nov 2012)

12

ANAEE-Flanders: status on funding/construction Planned, not built May 2012: call (Flemish administration) for consortia on Flemish roadmap to participate in European ESFRI projects Proposal selection ongoing (competitive) → outcome… Funding = policy decision of Flemish government Cofinancing from other sources
