The lucidity, depth, humour and beauty of Shakespeare’s language has inspired musicians, writers, artists and thinkers to greatness for centuries. I have always been fascinated by the fruits of this inspiration – a form of genius if you will! One such masterpiece – famously described by George Grove as “the greatest marvel of early maturity” – is Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, an effervescent work of extraordinary elegance, packed with memorable music. We have paired it with two less well-known but equally beguiling works by two men who were stars of Viennese musical life in their respective times – Otto Nicolai, founder of the Vienna Philharmonic and Erich Korngold, one of the great prodigies of the 20th century. I am truly looking forward to performing this colourful, sophisticated repertoire for you, with my friends at the NAC Orchestra. Enjoy!

Each year, 26 students are chosen by audition to sing with this chamber choir. Since its founding in the 1981-82 academic year, the ensemble has performed in many concert venues throughout the Ottawa area. In 1997, with current conductor and artistic director Laurence Ewashko at the helm, the group toured Austria for ten days. This season the Choir will perform two works by Berlioz, Romeo and Juliet and The Damnation of Faust.
