Toddlers Board Books

An interactive board book series for young ones to play with launching with three titles at once. Tap Tap is a brand new board books series for early years (2-5 years old) based on interactivity. Led by a likeable hero who the reader (boy or girl) can easily relate to, each book tells a short and simple adventure story. On each spread, a very easy to spot and recognisable pictogram (a red hand) invites the child to interact and help the main hero by accomplishing a small action i.e. find food, overcome an obstacle, or avoid danger... As soon as the child spots the red hand, they are invited to touch, hide, show something or even scream to interact with the action. In that way, their path through the story becomes both fun and stimulating.

laughing. I say baa says the lamb gently, and I say quack quack says the duck jokingly. What an orchestra. I can’t hear anything anymore says the cow with a smile. It’s good to smile before going tobed!

Don’t Be Scared! It’s not always easy to be a little crocodile. When he wants to play everybody is scared of being bitten. Even learning to swim or smell a flower becomes a challenge. Fortunately there is also a hedgehog and not even a crocodile would dare approach him.

What do you need to be a Big Bad Wolf? According to the wolf himself you need a red tongue, bright eyes, hairy ears and dark fur. Now this wolf is so scary that he even scares himself !

The Lion is a bit pretentious: he claims he is the

King of Animals !

But what about the elephant, the giraffe or the zebra, who are all as beautiful as him? Finally, the Lion agrees the other animals can also be kings… but in that case, he is the King of Kings!

Hide-and-Seek Animal Fun Emile Jadoul August 2014

Watch out for Big Bad Wolf! Watch out, I’m counting to ten… eight, nine, ten… aaaand I’m coming! And off goes Big Bad Wolf with his big basket to look for the hidden ones. Oh! Who’s there underneath the blanket, shaking? Lift the flap to uncover the small rabbit hiding! And what can you see there, behind the moving curtain? Lift the flap and discover a piglet and a small hen! And let’s not forget about lifting the lid of the big wooden box where you’ll find a little curly sheep, ready to join all of his friends in Big Bad Wolf’s big basket! Now, it’s time to eat. But eat what? Or who? Surely, not all of those little ones? No, eat together instead. And quick, so we can play hide-and-seek once more afterwards!

Big Bear’ cold day. Brrr… It has been snowing all day and Big Bear is on his way home. But who’s hidden behind those shuddering bushes? Let’s have a look, lift the flap and… oh, look who’s there: Little Rabbit shaking with cold! And who’s underneath Big Bear’s hat now? Little Rabbit’s little brother, all cosy in the warmth of Big Bear’s big hat! But they’re not the only ones to hide from the cold: two little birdies whose beaks were chattering behind a leaf can soon enjoy the warmth of Big Bear’s scarf, and three tiny mice who were sheltering in a tree stump are being carefully rescued by Big Bear who puts them in his big basket. But let’s all get in the warm, and quick, because now Big Bear himself struggles to keep warm! Luckily, Mama Bear was awaiting everyone at home, where she was getting some nice hot chocolate ready for all!

My Megabook of Opposites Elisabeth Brami and Marie Paruit August 2014

Familiarising children with important topics whilst remaining attractive and without sounding moralistic or patronising is the challenge that Elisabeth Brami and Marie Paruit have set themselves to overcome in this new series. With this new collection launched by two first titles on opposites and politeness, young children are solidly introduced to important concepts in a light-hearted way. Merging between picture book and non-fiction, this new collection opens on two topics: politeness and opposites. Through a wide variety of graphic approaches and with the main concern of being as fully comprehensive as possible, this Megabook covers 24 different categories of opposites (up / down ; over / under ; true / false ; inside / outside ; soft / hard…) and enjoys a mixed layout including fully illustrated spreads, single pages, loose illustrations etc. The text is cleverly adapted to each opposite set covered and is brought to the reader in differentiated text on the page.

My Megabook of Good Manners Elisabeth Brami and Marie Paruit August 2014

At the cross between picture books and non-fiction, this new collection opens on two topics: politeness and opposites. In The Megabook of Politeness, 20 different everyday situations (such as ‘on public transport’, ‘at school’, ‘in the bathroom’, ‘at the table’, ‘in family’…) are widely illustrated in four-colour. Each situation is given two attitude examples, each presented by two different characters (alternatively male and female) called Polite and Impolite and surrounded by a cast of human and animal characters. The narration comes in short descriptive rhyming bursts for each side of the situation and always concludes on the idea that being polite, far from being a constraint, is what makes living together easier and also makes everyone happier.

A Story of Friendship Amelie Billon and Marion Duval October 2014

This is the very simple story of three friends: two children and one polar bear. A story to remind us what it is to have friends, and how friendship can win over everything. Janet startles as the sound of a cry in the forest. Who could this be? Could this be her friend Bear? Could he possibly have fallen in a trap and need help? At once, she goes to the rescue – she remembers how Bear had saved her from drowning in the frozen lake not too long ago. To be faster and more efficient, she runs like a bear herself, and goes off on all fours, sniffs around to track him down and even makes the ground shake under her feet. Soon, Charlie hears a cry, too. Could this be Janet? Could she have stumbled upon a trap? Off he goes to the rescue too. After all, hadn’t she lent him her bike every time he needed one? Charlie runs and runs faster until he unexpectedly falls in a giant pit where Bear and Janet have ended up trapped themselves. But friendship can win over everything and with three pairs of arms and legs and the best of friends, the three manage to get out of the pit. They can then and forever continue with their lovely story of friendship. After all, friendship weighs much, much more than Bear’s weight!

The Little Time Thief Nathalie Minne August 2014

How to introduce children to the very ethereal concept of time? Nathalie Minne offers her answer to the question, with a delightfully poetic text and her very unique imagery. The little time thief never had a great understanding of time. Seconds, minutes, hours, from dawn to twilight, all seem to relentlessly go by, the same way every day. Until he meets a little girl, one day, and all of a sudden – it all starts to make sense! Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday… how many days until he meets her again? The week, slowly and painfully goes by, never quickly enough. Will he be able to catch those fleeting minutes to be able to be with her again and spend more time by her side? Time has never been so precious: precious because they share it together. Following on from The Word Thief and The Little Boy from the Woods, this is Nathalie Minne’s third picture book. A heartfelt story told in a very subtle manner adorned by Nathalie’s very enchanting and unique illustration style which shows off her maturity.

The Fox in the Tree Magali Dulain and Simon Quitterie August 2014

The touching story of a young boy meeting a fox, told in a beautiful, almost dreamlike manner. “Today I saw a fox, perched in a tree. Would you believe it? I thought that foxes lived in the fields…” This is how this story begins: a little boy discovering, by chance, up there in the branches of a tree, a wild orange-furred animal that quickly fascinates him. Soon, he joins the fox in the tree and they both strike up a shy conversation at first, the fox being the most reserved of the two (because in this charming story, of course little boys and foxes know how to talk to one another). It quickly transpires that the fox is waiting for someone who isn’t coming. The narrator decides to wait alongside him and to take his mind off the wait, with some food, jokes and a nice, friendly conversation. Little by little, without seeming to do so, he manages to domesticate the wild animal, which is still waiting for his friend to arrive. And when it gets too cold to wait up there for the missing friend, they both get to the ground and decide to be the best of friends forever – because, it appears clearly then that the very friend the fox was waiting for, was the little boy himself! A powerful story of a friendship which breaks the boundaries of difference cleverly brought to life with the dreamlike imagery of Magali Dulain and the heartfelt words of Quitterie Simon.

The Beauty and The Beast David Sala 1 October 2014

A stunning and stylish take on the popular fairy tale by David Sala, at the top of his art. ‘There was once a very rich merchant. His daughters were extremely handsome, especially the youngest. When she was little everybody admired her, and called her "The little Beauty" ’ To saver her father’s life, Beauty accepts to become hostage to the terrifying Beast until she realises that behind his monstrous looks, there is a man who can be respected … and loved. This very popular tale has been made all the more famous by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont’s version. Here, this classic text meets an illustrator worthy of its richness and beauty: David Sala’s luminous, inspired style relentlessly challenges its own limits. Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont’s original text is reproduced unabridged and is complimented by Sala’s beautiful art, alternating in simple pages and double spreads. A Day called Sparrow Anne Herbauts 3 September 2014

A sleeping giant and a wonderfully smelly cake meet in Anne Herbaut’s latest masterpiece. That day, when Morning wants to open his door, he finds it blocked. Nothing will do. At that moment exactly, Sparrow, the Day, is flying by his window. Morning goes: “Hello, Day! Do you know what’s happening in front of my door?” What could it possibly be, he thought? A giant rock? Or an elephant, perhaps? A meteor, maybe? None of those in fact as it turns out that it’s a giant, a sleeping giant snoring helplessly by his door! What an extremely unlucky situation. But Morning has an idea: to wake his nose up, first. So they all help out in the household – the stairs, the clock, the wooden beams, the floors, the attic, the pillow, the lightbulb, the stove, the chair, and the window, all indicating in turn which utensils and ingredients Morning will need to bake the most amazing cake. And soon, a delicious smell is filing the house, and little by little, escaping through the door. The giant, at the front door, wakes up slowly with delight. And after having marvelled at the smell (he coughed, cried a little and eventually smiled too!), he took off, and left, very simply, as light as a feather. Morning has opened the door now, and meets Day, who is already chirping. Good Day, Morning! Stones are flying, hearts are light ; Sparrows are chirping, and morning’s a delight!

or verticality. I think of the text and the image at the same time, it’s like a compact mass, that I hardly separate to be able to work on it in a practical way. I work the rhythm in the text, in the images, in the pages, in the book. I am part of the book, I smell the book, I build it. I write as if I was sculpting, nicking, cutting, quavering. This tingling produced by the writing is something close to the soul’s and body’s skin, to the thoughts. Writing-stamen that between text and image, filters, pierces, stings awakens. You never tell what, you pick around it so that it appears. So the more you try to get close, the more you kill what you want to show. The point is, that it is the whole where invisible things go through, and the mark, the stain that shows. Shape, detour, around, hole, point. With these recesses and marks, these blemishes of sound, of colours, of paper, of stitching, of language, I write my books. Something happens, Between the text and the images, Somewhere in the folds of the book, the stitching, the margins. The book is a space of paper, of couture and wind. There are pages, text, images. But most of all its fabric is time. Reading, enfolding, the gesture of turning the page inscribe themselves in the fourth dimension of this articulated object with elytra made of cardboard.

Anne Herbauts was born somewhere in Brussels around 1975. She studied at the Academie des Beaux- Arts of Brussels illustrations and graphic novels. She has, since, published over 30 children’s (and adult’s) books and graphic novels. Sometimes she spreads herself over other types of writings, short movies, animated films, narrating spaces and huts. She collects moon’s shavings and flakes of images. She draws empty spaces and absences with borders made of writing, with traces of evidence, by superimposing, by repetition, by stuttering. She loves short phrases and delectable words. She is eager and too big of it. She is not in the image or in the text but in both at the same time. In between, between the two and in her “work space”. Books and time are raw materials. Moons and wood shavings Books mean time. Time is my material. Via vertical writings, piercings, suspensions, “pure time” I find the horizontal narration of the book. I play with the space-time of the book. The larger books have slow rhythms, deep breaths. You have the space to dip your stares, to plunge into the image. The text is part of the image. The smaller formats like Edouard and Armand, roll, bump into each other, they propel themselves from one page to the other. There is no space here for time

Atlas of Geographs of Orbae Two volumes François Place 14 January 2015

A paperback reissue of François Place’s uncontested masterpiece, already considered a classic in children’s literature. Written in the dreamy, excited tone of ancient atlases at the time the discovery of the world was in its early days, Atlas of Orbæ is the exploration of a fictional, alternative world which has become a classic of imaginary writing across all age categories since its release in the late 90s. A true publishing phenomenon awarded many prizes (such as the Cercle d’Or Livres Hebdo for best picture book, the Prix France Télévisions, the Bologna Book Fair Best Non-Fiction prize, or the Prix Sorcières 2001), this work of fiction takes the shape of fantastical tales and has propelled its author and illustrator, François Place, to a star status in children’s literature.

15 years after its initial publication and with a couple of the volumes now out of stock, Atlas Of Orbæ enjoys a fresh new edition split over two volumes only instead of the three originally published as well as a complete revamp: revised layouts, a new format, new typesetting and an added map inserted at the back of the book. In short, a new look for a timeless book, one of the most important works in French children’s literature.

Angel, the White Indian François Place 2 April 2014

In his new book, François Place takes us to 18th century Antarctica. A riveting read with a fantasy touch, this is a pure adventure story at heart. Born mixed-race from a Caucasian European mother and Indian father, Angel is a ‘white’ Indian who has so far miraculously survived the brutalities of slavery. When a French boat called Neptune on its way to the cold southern territories pulls over in the Buenos Aires bay for a few days, Angel doesn’t hesitate and hops on board clandestinely, certain that life on board, whatever it might be, couldn’t possibly be worse than the one on the ground. Thus begins an extraordinarily adventurous journey, which eventually leads Angel and his fellow boatmen through a very peculiar stone arch and to the very intriguing and fabulously beautiful territory of Antarctica. With his newfound friend Corvadoro, a well-educated Venitian, Angel meets the fascinating people of Waonas, humanoids with two mouths, who will introduce them to their far-flung land and customs – a land akin to the mythical Atlantis. Back in Europe from a very perilous and bumpy journey, Angel and Cordovo will do their best to bring this ghost land to attention, realising at once that their beautiful land seems to fall off any known map of the world. With this engrossing adventure story, François Place aims to celebrate the true beauty of imagination, which lives on the edge of our world and which infuses it, bringing to each and everyone more power to build it every day.

The writing of this series is engaging and captivating and the world of Penelope Green is intriguing and mysterious, fraught with danger and unexpected turns of event…making each book a fast paced and very exciting read. There are also distinct repetitive features: Penelope’s fiercely independent will, the development of a semiromance with her “bodyguard”, Cyprien Bonaventure, and her nose for a story (and for danger!). Interestingly, the author has chosen to set the stories in a lost time, the late 19th century, when female character were rarely independent, so Penelope Green is a very distinctive and unusual character, which creates a strong ‘follow-ability’ 80.000 copies sold so far.

The Night Book Valerie Gidoux and Hélène Rajack September 2014

A beautiful exploration of night and night-time in all of its aspects, halfway between core nonfiction and lyrical evocation. Night-time. A beautifully rich and vast universe in itself, with its myriad of creatures and phenomena. A universe so vast you could spend a night getting to know it, in the same manner this picture book does, starting from twilight to the early stages of dawn… At night, many things happen. First, it is sleeptime, a time we get off our daily lives, during which most of us sleep, but there are many other things to know about: the moon and the constellations, night-time animals, nocturnal creatures born out of human imagination, but all of those awake who work and enjoy life overnight too as well as many other nocturnal creatures and surprising events. Each night theme is treated in one or several spreads and given a rather poetical chapter heading such as ‘A Journey through Twilight’, ‘Shhh...They’re sleeping’ or ‘Light Show’. Fascinating and informative facts meet the often surprising illustrations by Hélène Rajcak. A unique non-fiction title laid out like a journey through nightlife, to be read like a story you wish had no ending from the early evening … until the break of dawn.

Archie Rabbit’s Big Questions Astrid Desbordes and Claudia Boldt Seprtember 2014

Dear reader, time to brace yourself! Archie Rabbit is going to challenge all of our commonly accepted ideas.

Archie Rabbit, despite looking somewhat of a simpleton, is a rabbit of the highest intelligence… This Socrates of modern times will astound you! In three different parts, he is asking himself (and you) many questions: for example, who is he exactly, what does he like, and what does he know? Would he still be a rabbit if he didn’t have his big ears? And you, if we took away your big ears, would you still be you? Why, he wonders also, does he love carrot crisps so much, and his darling Pamlita? Why don’t words come out when we really want them to? Is it possible to understand big, complex things when you are only small, or is it only possible for adults? The text, written with wit and a wry kind of humour, approaches the questions that are of interest to everyone, young and old alike, with subtlety and a pinch of philosophy. A gift for everyone to enjoy!
