Avec une musique aussi familière que celle écrite par Tchaïkovski pour Le Lac des cygnes, les spectateurs pensent qu’ils connaissent la suite, tandis qu’une musique différente maintient leur intérêt et pique leur curiosité. Par ailleurs, les danseurs chantent et parlent beaucoup, parce que je voulais que le spectacle soit réaliste et n’ait pas le caractère fantastique du ballet classique. Dans les scènes de la Lobola et du Mariage, nous chantons, comme cela se fait traditionnellement pendant les fêtes en Afrique. Il y a aussi beaucoup de cris et de ululements. Cette exubérance tapageuse fait intimement partie de notre culture. Les Sud-Africains s’expriment beaucoup verbalement et les autres peuples pensent que nous sommes bruyants et pleins d’énergie.
