Les Pré sentations – Qui suis-je? – Introducing yourself in French WHY IT MATTERS:
Because of “Les bonnes manières” (good manners), that’s why it’s important. In almost all social milieus, when meeting somebody for the first time, you will very likely have to engage in the usual civil rituals involving greetings, a handshake, a kiss or maybe a hug. This has become so second nature to all of us that we could do it with our eyes shut. In French, however, there is a level of complexity added to this simple process because of the need to distinguish between a formal introduction and an informal one. (Please also see lesson on TU vs. VOUS). This lesson will tackle all these elements.

Variant #1: Bonjour, je m’appelle…I am called / my name is … Variante #2: Bonjour, je me nomme…I am named / my name is… Variante # 3 : Bonjour, je suis… I am… Variant #4: Bonjour, je me présente, je m’appelle…[here, the meaning for je me présente is very close to its English counterpart « allow me to introduce myself » Do the same for #2 and #3. Note: You can also add Monsieur or Madame after bonjour. As of 2012, the use of Mademoiselle has officially been banned.

Variante #1: Enchanté(e) de faire votre connaissance ! Variant #2: Enchanté(e) de vous rencontrer ! Variant #3: Ravi(e) de faire votre connaissance ! Variant # 4 : Ravi(e) de vous rencontrer ! Variant #5 : C’est un plaisir de faire votre connaissance Variant # 6 : C’est un plaisir de vous rencontrer! Note: enchanté(e) and ravi(e) are too shortened forms of what you see above and they can be used just fine to mean the same thing.

“Comment allez-vous?” remains the French phrase of choice to ask somebody how they are doing in a formal manner. And to respond: Variant #1: Très bien, merci! Et vous? Variant #2: bien, merci! Et vous?

Variant #3 : Je vais bien, merci ! Et vous ? Note: You could perhaps use “vous allez bien?” as another vous variant of this formal greeting, but you want to err on the side of caution because asking this question in this way can still give the impression that you’re being too casual with your interlocutor, especially if this is somebody you’re just meeting.
Introducing yourself informally [Audio Available: “french-greetingsinformal.mp3”]
Variant #1: Salut, je m’appelle… Variant # 2: Salut, mon nom est… Variant # 3: Eh, moi c’est… Interjecting words such as Salut or Eh will surely set the tone of your introductions as very casual. Young people or school kids are more likely to introduce themselves in this manner. Unless you have no specific desire to appear formal or professional to your new interlocutor (at least during your first encounter), you should not use the above.
