FB Remote I/O

Description FB Remote I/O modules are used as signal conditioning units between field devices and control systems. The devices are mounted in well designed IP66 field enclosures in Zone 1. The various I/O modules may be plugged in or removed from a live circuit. FB Remote I/O modules offer advantages in that they are galvanically isolated, they can boost and amplify signals, and are easily mounted as plug-in units. Since they are galvanically isolated they do not require equipotential earth connections normally encountered with safety barriers. Changes in the power supply voltage do not affect the excellent device performance due to the properties of the built-in amplifier circuits. Furthermore they render system I/O cards superfluous. Wiring between them and the system is reduced to a single bus. Light emitting diodes (LEDs) indicate the device status. A green LED shows the operating condition and a red LED signals alarm conditions e.g. line faults and interruptions. This information can be accessed from the DCS and PLC via a standard bus.

Substation ➀ Substations can be connected to process control systems (DCS) and programmable logic controllers (PLC) via standard busses. They open the gate to all major system manufacturers and can be mounted in zone 1 hazardous areas. Mounting The prewired Ex-e IP66 enclosure contains a mechanically compact and robust backplane system. The various IS input/output modules plug into the frame. Proven Ex-d connectors with self cleaning contacts allow modules to be removed in the hazardous area during operation (hot swop).

The backplane ➁ The modular concept allows you to flange enclosures together to arrive at the desired size. Each housing contains Ex-e terminals for power and communication. These are safely covered separately and touch protected. The modules ➂ The compact size of the modules using the proven LB Remote I/O electronics lead to a high packing density. Snap in mounting utilising the most advanced plastics technology allows the FB Remote I/O modules to be plugged in firmly without the need for fixing screws. The field connection is made by a coded Phoenix mini combicon connector on the top of the module. The system is so designed that any of the modules can be slotted into any position on the backplane so that IS terminations are made to suite the wiring and not the other way around. Up to 24 I/O modules ➂ plus a power supply module can be fitted in an enclosure. Depending upon the module type, either one, two, or three channels can be utilised. A large range of interface modules are available for all applications including SMART/HART compatible devices. Power supply module To meet and exceed the EMC regulations a separate PSU module supplies up to 24 FB Remote I/O series interface modules. Communications module 4 The communications module is the link between the intrinsically safe I/O modules and the control system. The unit can handle up to 48 I/O modules and is available in various bus formats. The unit is located on the left hand side of the first backplane segment.

Remote I/O I/O FBLB Remote

FB Remote I/O series: software The FB Remote I/O interface modules have no internal or external switches or adjustments. The configuration can be done either by the control system or by an easy to use WINDOWS program via the redundant bus. Comm. untis can also be configured in the control room and transported to be plugged in in the field. The setup data for every module is stored in a non volatile memory located within the communications module. Self generating documentation The free of charge FB Remote I/O series software uses the configuration data to generate a full system documentation package. Considerable time and cost savings can be realised by utilising this feature. Plug and play service Because the I/O setup data for every module is already stored, should a fault develop within a module, it can easily be removed and replaced by a standard unprogrammed I/O module. As soon as the new unit is inserted, the communication module instantly updates the new I/O module and within a fraction of a second the device is back in operation. This scenario also applies to the commu-

nications module. However, a download of configuration data is required either from the control system or from a PC using the redundant bus. Layered redundancy As every control system has its own individual requirements, the FB Remote I/O series has a modular approach to redundancy. Due to the FB Remote I/O series hardware design, the power supply and the FB Remote I/O are not regarded as being susceptible to major system failure. The critical areas of concern are the control system fieldbus and the communications module. The FB Remote I/O series can overcome these concerns by offering a solution. Redundant communication module b Two FB Remote I/O series communications modules can, if required, be placed in parallel to give a high level of system redundancy. Signal processing a The FB Remote I/O series interface units have a unique way of handling signals to and from the field. The FB Remote I/O modules convert incoming field signals to an internal FB Remote I/O format. This also works in reverse for outgoing signals.

One function of the communications module is to supervise a rapid data exchange between all of the I/O modules and itself. At any time, an internal memory within the communications module, holds all the field signal data. The second function of the memory within the communications module, is to allow the control system’s fieldbus to access and exchange information. As the memory is the only interface between the FB Remote I/O and the control system fieldbus, future fieldbus developments in this area can be accommodated easily. HART/SMART communication The FB Remote I/O series supports HART communication. If the control system supports HART communication it is then possible to communicate directly with the field devices. In addition to this, the redundant comm. unit allows the user to access the HART field devices via a PC using standard software. FB Remote I/O intelligence The FB Remote I/O series is capable of conducting certain functions locally, without involving the external fieldbus connection to the control system. This allows the system to react quickly to time critical operations. The functions are limited to redistributing data from an input to one or more outputs and in addition, with analogue signals it is possible to perform trip functions. Additional features on request. Line fault detection All FB Remote I/O series I/O modules have a sophisticated Line Fault Detection System. This feature can be enabled or disabled for each channel individually. On detecting a line fault on a channel, the following events occur: • Red LED indication on I/O module • The input or output signal is taken to a pre-determined level • A flag is set within the memory of the communication module • A relay output within the communications module is deenergised, allowing the control system to perform an interrupt routine PROFIBUS PA The slots immediately next to the communication unit can be equipped with IS PROFIBUS PA segment power supplies. This leaves the system open for future expansions.

HART/SMART communication If the external field bus to the DCS supports HART communication, the LB Remote I/O products transfer the HART signals to the field units unchanged. Each communication interface has an RS 485 HART interface. In redundant systems this can be used simultaneously with the main bus. HART communication is possible from the control room with each HART compatible field device. You can employ the software supplied by the field device manufacturer or CORNERSTONE, AMS, SMARTVISION, KSMART etc. to do so.
