OUR DIRECTION We seek to change the systems that enable extreme poverty and inequitable development to disproportionately affect much of the African continent. To create that change, we spark and accelerate systemic innovations.
OUR VISION
Over the next 5 years we’ll advance our Vision by leveraging our talents as a community to create change along 3 Pathways in 5 Portfolios.

Over 5 years, we will invest in each other to grow our COMMUNITY. We will broaden the structures of engagement in this community, actively foster a community of Systems Change Leaders in Africa and the linkages between Canadian and African leaders.
We are a community of convenors, entrepreneurs and advocates. We will channel these talents along 3 PATHWAYS to create change:
We will work in 5 PORTFOLIOS that represent systems that entrench injustice, that are ripe for change, and that will engage and energize a vibrant EWB community:
We will work together on common systems in different geographies to maximize our impact.
Convening Collisions We bring diverse groups together to make sense of the systems we want to change, highlight bright ideas, create coalitions and test innovations Accelerating Ventures We invest in ventures that will drive radical systemic innovations to change the status quo, while at the same time being resilient, moving beyond EWB's support within 3 to 5 years Influencing Policy We transform the policies, practices and behaviours of powerful institutions--be they government, corporate, or other-- through influence from within and from without
1) Small and growing businesses that drive social good 2) Adaptive public services that are responsive to citizens’ needs 3) Food systems that are resilient and support livelihoods 4) Engineering leaders who contribute to solving societal challenges in the 21st Century 5) Canadian companies that are global leaders in socially responsible mining in Africa
NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR COLLECTIVE CANADIAN ENGAGEMENT IN 2014 We are excited to invest with our community in 3 collective areas of action for the first year of our 5 Year Direction. Our collective challenge is to unlock innovation in these areas.
1. SHAPING OUR FOOD SYSTEMS PORTFOLIO 2. INFLUENCING IN THE ENGINEERING SECTOR
3. ADVOCATING FOR AID EFFECTIVENESS
Food Systems globally need to be transformed toward greater resilience and inclusivity of small-scale farmers. In 2014: • We will have identified 10 innovations across Canada that have the potential to change how Canadians relate to their food and the global agricultural landscape By bringing sustainability and social justice lenses into their work, current and future generations of engineering practitioners and students can help tackle some of the world’s toughest global challenges. In 2014: • We will have run a workplace intrapreneurship program for 10 Pivot Fellows, mostly from among our EWB professional membership • At least 20 EWB chapters will have engaged in Global Engineering activities. For example: o Chapters with Pivot Fellows in their cities will pair with and support those fellows through leadership development and other relevant means o At least 3 chapters will have started work on a Global Engineering Certificate on their campus o At least 5 chapters will have tested global engineering outreach innovations that connect engineers to other disciplines, seeding fertile ground for future ventures The Canadian aid sector has undergone significant change in the past year, including the merger of CIDA and Foreign Affairs and significant reductions in the aid budget. By March: • We will have run a campaign with partners like ONE.org calling on the government to protect vital aid resources in the March 2015 federal budget. Our actions will engage chapters in a range of creative campaigning, including: o engaging 30,000 Canadians through online and offline actions o hosting creative campaign events at 20+ chapters across Canada, each of them capable of generating local/national media attention o meeting 100+ MPs to make our campaign points clear to those in power o signing up 10,000 Canadians for the Advocacy Action Network mailing list
