Flexibility – with maximum power If every picture tells a story, this one certainly tells the story of how the DVNR Image Processing Workstation can enhance your pictures and make your work a lot less bumpy. Since the DVNR was introduced in 1988, it has been a state-of-the-art system, setting the industry standard for grain and scratch reduction. However, the grain reducer is only one part of the complete system. You can choose from a number of options, including colour grading and aspect ratio conversion. Our process engine enables enhancement of all types of images, easily and swiftly. Our modular approach gives you the opportunity to customize your system to meet your specific needs, choosing only grain and noise, the complete kit or something in between. If you want, you can upgrade your system with more options and thereby take full advantage of the latest technology. In that way, the system grows with your advancing needs. Our latest processing technology means you have access to a future-proof system, which you can continuously upgrade through software.

Time is money You will find that all the processing options offered within the DVNR system provide for efficient handling. This is why the DVNR real-time processing is a definite advantage. There is no need for the system to run all night, we can give you the same high-quality results straight away. With the DVNR your work flows fast so you do not have to sacrifice valuable time. After all, time is money.

The complete system With DVNR you can work in any type of post-production environment: telecine or tape/disk based. Thus you are not locked to one specific section of the chain. The same flexibility applies when it comes to the choice of controller. DVNR is supported by all major controllers; you can even use a laptop. However, you will find that our Valhall control system is the optimal choice. DVNR Image Processing Workstations are available in various formats including HD and SD (4:2:2 and 4:4:4). And they support the highest standards in image enhancement. Whichever format you choose, you will be ensured a complete system for flexible and efficient post-production.

DVNR Pre-Processing

DVNR Restoration

Effective pre-processing for optimal encoding

Restoring to former glory

Pre-processing is not to be confused with pre-filtering which simply removes high-frequency content. DVNR pre-processing brings out the best performance from your MPEG-2 encoder. One of the main problems in MPEG-2 encoding is the introduction of artefacts. This is a result of an encoder incapable of handling the complexity of the pictures. To deal with this situation the signal should be adapted to the encoder by applying appropriate preprocessing. The two main pre-processing operations are bandwidth shaping and noise reduction. Bandwidth shaping reduces high-frequency details to a level where the pictures can be efficiently handled by the encoder. Some picture details are lost but this is usually preferable. The artefacts introduced by the encoder are normally much worse for the viewer. The brickwall filter provides optimal control of picture detail through the use of two-dimensional spatial filtering.

There are thousands of great films waiting for re-release on new digital media formats such as DVD and Video-On-Demand (VOD). Most of these old classics need refurbishment to meet the demands of today’s consumers. Among other things, dirt, dust, scratches, hop and weave have to be removed. This is normally a time consuming process, especially when the highest quality is required. The dirt and scratch removal tool swiftly removes most damages to the film, without generating undesirable artefacts, in real time. In contrast, optical processes may only remove surface damages to the film but not opaque objects and damages to the emulsion layer. Film stock has evolved over the years providing finer and finer grain structures at the same or higher sensitivity levels. To match

Noise is, by its nature, a signal with no temporal redundancy. The MPEG-2 algorithms rely heavily on temporal redundancy to achieve high compression ratios. Thus, noise will use a significant amount of the bit budget. In most cases noise is not desired in the final result and is therefore better removed before encoding so that the precious bits can be used to describe the real picture content. The grain and noise reducer provides sophisticated tools to optimise the noise profile of your content. Using these tools, encoding efficiency can be improved by up to 30%. This improved efficiency can either be used to improve the picture quality at a given bitrate or to maintain the picture quality at a lower bitrate. These basic tools can be complemented with other tools from the DVNR range, such as scratch concealment, anti-aliasing and image stabilization.

today’s expectations advanced grain and noise reduction must be applied. This must, however, be done with great care. As the grain amplitude is reduced the film-look is easily lost. Maintaining the grain structure is fundamental in this process. Digital Vision offers the high-performance tools you need for every situation. Whether the corrections are done directly in the telecine transfer process or from tape or disk, the restoration tools are as efficient. The process offers cost effective restoration of damaged film and largely avoids the use of manual paintwork. DVNR has been used in the restoration of a number of classical movies to remove the effects of deterioration or to repair the damage done by poor handling and storage, thereby allowing them to be restored to their former glory.

DVNR Colour Grading

Valhall

With Valhall, image processing has entered a new dimension

The creative colour grading process Colour grading is an important part of the post-production chain for all types of content. Colour grading is used to achieve a consistent look, but also as a creative tool. The process puts high demands on both the colourist and the colour grading system. A user-friendly high-end system is the key to achieving optimal results. Primary and secondary colour processing, together with highand low-light desaturation, provide tools for advanced tape/disk based colour grading. Aspect ratio conversion and pan&scan processing may

also require re-grading to maintain the desired result in all delivery formats. The most efficient way to do this is to combine format conversion and colour grading. All of these options are available with the DVNR workstation. The user interface has been designed to provide accurate tools with high speed of operation. Additionaly, the flexibility of the system gives you the choice to use only the advanced colour corrector or to work parallel with one or several of the other image processing tools.

The control system is a central part of any image processing system. To reach the full potential of the DVNR Image Processing Workstations we have designed the Valhall control system. It has been developed in close collaboration with industry professionals to provide a powerful system, which is easy to learn and use. Indeed, we view Valhall as the heart of your work; a complete and comprehensive control system for tape and disc based image

processing. With its flexible system architecture, Valhall offers full integration of DVNR Image Processing with several user-friendly advantages in function and design. The ergonomic and compact control panels for colour correction, process list management and device control with direct access keys for all processing options makes your work flow fast. This, of course, also translates into a good long-term economy.
