I

Types of energy There are two types of energy sources : non-renewable and renewable. Fossil fuels - coal, oil and natural gas - are non-renewable sources of energy because they took millions of years to form, under conditions that may never be repeated.

Solar power, wind power and hydroelectricity are renewable energy because they are inexhaustible or naturally replenished on human time scales. All of these can be captured in different ways. The pie chart alongside represents the consumption of the U.S.A in 2009 per type of energy. 1. Which energy source provides the most energy ? 2. What percentage are renewable energy sources ? 3. What percentage are nonrenewable energy sources ? 4. What percentage of the energy sources are fossil fuels ? 5. What percentage of the renewable energy are wind energy sources ? 6. What percentage of the energy sources are wind energy sources ?

Energy in homes

Example 1 : The bar graph given alongside gives the energy consumption per home and the repartion by energy sources. 1. What is the energy consumption (in Btu) per home in 1980 and in 2005 ? What is the evolution of the consumption ? 2. What is the energy consumption (in Btu) for appliances and lighting in 1980 and in 2005 ? 3. What is the percentage increase of the concumption for appliances between 1980 and 2005 ? Example 2 : The frequency table for the number of televisions per household in U.S.A is given below. Number of households (1997) (in millions)

1. How many housholds have 5 televisions in 1997 and in 2009 ? 2. Calculate the mean in 1997 and in 2009. 3. Construct a relative frequency distribution table. 4. Construct a cumulative relative frequency distribution table. 5. What is the median in 1997 and in 2009 ? 6. What is the connection between the consumption studied previously and the number of televisions ?
