Welcome to our 2nd edition of Face 2 Face, focusing this year on four solo artists with distinct personalities. Face 2 Face gives us the chance to introduce new artists in a variety of intimate settings within a weeklong series, allowing you to delve into thematic, contemporary trends from here and abroad. Artists in this second edition come to us from the UK, Germany, France and Canada.

Bienvenue à la deuxième édition de notre série Face à Face, qui met à l’honneur cette année, en solo, quatre artistes de personnalités distinctes. Étalée sur toute une semaine, cette série est l’occasion de découvrir des figures émergentes de la danse dans divers lieux de présentation intimes et de se frotter à des courants thématiques contemporains d’ici et d’ailleurs. Les artistes de cette deuxième mouture nous viennent du Royaume-Uni, de l’Allemagne, de la France et du Canada.

I first came upon the work of Aakash Odedra through the internationally acclaimed choreographer Akram Khan – an NAC dance favourite - who asked me to look at his solo for Aakash. I was immediately convinced, not just by the language that Akram found within the performer, but by the performer himself – a stunning, eclectic, dynamic mover who embraced the solo material with great passion. Two other Ottawa favourites – Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Russell Maliphant – then made equally substantive solos, and Aakash himself opens the journey with an exquisite display of his own Kathak wizardry. Together these four works encompass the poetic and breathtaking program Rising.

J’ai découvert le travail d’Aakash Odedra par l’entremise du chorégraphe de renommée mondiale Akram Khan – chouchou de Danse CNA –, qui voulait me montrer un solo qu’il avait créé pour Aakash. J’ai été immédiatement conquise, pas seulement par le langage qu’Akram avait su révéler chez l’interprète, mais par le danseur lui-même, qui prenait à bras-le-corps le solo avec une dynamique du mouvement fascinante et éclectique. Rising Widely known as an accomplished Kathak dancer and a rising young star of British dance, Aakash Odedra has trained with acclaimed dancers Chitraleka Bolar and Nilima Devi in the UK and Asha Joglekar and Chhaya Kanvateh in India. Aakash spent 2011 working with acclaimed choreographers Akram Khan, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Russell Maliphant. The three each created solos on Aakash’s body and in turn, allowed Aakash to observe the choreographic processes of three very distinct choreographers. Rising is the culmination of this investigation and continues to tour locally and internationally.

A classical Kathak variation focusing on virtuosity and timing, Nritta corresponds to pure dance steps performed rhythmically. Here the movements of the body do not convey any mood or meaning and its purpose is just creating beauty by making various patterns, lines in space and time.

Variation classique de danse kathak mettant l’accent sur la virtuosité et la synchronisation, Nritta présente des pas de danse pure exécutés de façon rythmique. The direction for this solo choreography is not so much about making a piece as it is about exploring my continuous fascination with the ‘animal’ we have within ourselves. I feel the question that is constantly evoked during my research of the ‘body’, is that as human beings, we continue to evolve from generation to generation, but ‘are we becoming more ‘human’ over time, or are we becoming more like ‘animals?’. I have always felt a strong connection to the ‘animal’ embedded within the Indian dance tradition. Kathak masters have so often used animals as forms of inspiration, even to the point of creating a whole repertoire based on the qualities, movements, and rhythms of certain animals. So, in this journey with Aakash, I was fascinated to discover if there was an animal residing deep within the shadow of his own body.

Pour ce solo, mon intention n’était pas tant de créer une danse que d’explorer ma fascination constante pour la dimension animale que nous gardons au fond de nous. Au cours de ma recherche sur le « corps », j’ai pu constater que les êtres humains sont en évolution perpétuelle de génération en génération, mais la question qui surgit toujours est de savoir si nous devenons plus « humains » au fil du temps, ou si c’est notre côté « animal » qui gagne du terrain. J’ai toujours senti l’importance de l’élément « animal » dans la danse traditionnelle indienne. Les maîtres de la danse kathak se sont souvent inspirés du monde animal, au point de créer tout un répertoire basé sur les qualités, les mouvements et les rythmes de certains animaux. C’est pourquoi, au cours de cette collaboration avec Aakash, j’ai cherché à découvrir s’il y avait un animal tapi dans l’ombre de son corps.

For CUT, I wanted to create a piece using elements and dynamics that Aakash is familiar with from his background in Kathak and Bharat Natyam. I wanted to shape that into a world where the lighting cuts and highlights that movement and creates a contained world that expresses its own logic of flow and form. Working with lighting designer Michael Hulls to achieve this, and with composer Andy Cowton, both of whom I have collaborated with many times on past works, CUT is the result of this collaboration. — Russell Maliphant

Lorsque j’ai chorégraphié CUT, je voulais créer une pièce en utilisant les éléments et la dynamique qui sont familiers à Aakash en raison de sa formation dans les styles de danse kathak et bharat natyam. Lightning and thunder. Light and sound. The illusions of distance and nearness they convey in a sky that deceptively appears a constant. Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui has been fascinated by the different images these convey, while their source is often one and the same. He seeks to highlight different patterns of

By the flow of light and sound emanating from darkness and their return to that state. All this with and through Aakash as the locus, the astral body generating its own rhythms and luminosity.

Training initially in the classical Indian dance styles of Kathak and Bharat Natyam in India and the UK, Aakash Odedra is one of the hottest rising stars of British Dance. 2011 saw Aakash working with renowned choreographers Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Russell Maliphant and his mentor Akram Khan, shadowing the creation of several of their works as they each made solos on him. The culmination of this was presented in the full evening work, Rising, which continues to tour extensively throughout the world. More recently he performed Akram Khan’s solo work In the Shadow of Man at the Royal Opera House in London. His own choreographies range from largescale classical evenings to contemporary works and opera, such as the Theatre Freiburg production of God’s Little Soldier. He has been honored with numerous awards and bursaries including a development grant by Arts Council England, the two year choreographic bursary from Akademi and most recently the Danza&Danza award for best new interpretation in Italy. In 2009 Aakash was invited by Akram Khan to present a solo during his

This was followed by a duet with Indian Kathak artist Sanjukta Sinha at Southbank’s Alchemy Festival. Aakash took part in ENPARTS’s (European Network of Performing Arts) Choreolab “Body is What Remains” in Serbia in 2010 and most recently choreographed for HRH the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations and the closing of the London Cultural Olympiad. Along with the continuing international tour of Rising, Aakash has just won the Sky Arts Ideas Tap award and is collaborating with Austrian company ARS Electronica Futurelab on a new evening-length work. He also worked with the Apollo Theater in New York on an evening of work that celebrates the life and work of James Brown, which premiered in October 2013.

Russell Maliphant trained at The Royal Ballet School and Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet. He has danced with DV8 Physical Theatre, Michael Clark, Rosemary Butcher, and Laurie Booth, winning awards for “raising improvisational dance to new heights.” His studies of anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics inform his teaching and choreography, as do classical ballet, contact improvisation, yoga, capoeira, and tai chi. He formed Russell Maliphant Company in 1996 and has since collaborated closely with lighting designer Michael Hulls, dancer Sylvie Guillem, theatre artist Robert Lepage, installation artist Isaac Julian, Balletboyz, and Lyon Opera Ballet. His muchacclaimed works include Sheer, Choice, Broken Fall, PUSH, Cast No Shadow, Eonnagata, Afterlight (Parts One, Two, and Three), and The Rodin Project, which was also adapted for film. Many have toured internationally and garnered awards, including a Critics’ Circle National Dance award and two Olivier Awards for best new dance production. Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui

Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui is known for a silky, densely layered mix of hybrid movement and emotionally intense theatre. Born in Antwerp, Belgium, to a Flemish mother and a Moroccan father, he first danced in variety shows and TV programs. He made his debut as a choreographer with Anonymous Society in 1999. Since then he has made more than 20 full-fledged choreographic pieces (including M¡longa, TeZukA, Puz/zle, Labyrinth, Boléro, D’avant, Sutra, Babel(words), Anna Karenina (film), Foi, Myth, Rien de Rien, zero degrees, and Loin) and has garnered numerous prestigious awards. He was a member of the Belgian collective Les Ballets C. de la B., was artist in residence at Toneelhuis in Antwerp, and has worked with many collaborators and guest artists (including María Pagés, the Shaolin monks, Antony Gormley, and Akram Khan), theatres, opera houses, film directors, and ballet companies. Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui became an Associate Artist of Sadler’s Wells in 2008; he was declared ‘Choreographer of the Year’ by dance magazine Tanz in 2008 and 2011.

Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui est réputé pour sa gestuelle hybride, soyeuse et dense et pour son théâtre aux émotions intenses. Né à Anvers, en Belgique, d’une mère flamande et d’un père marocain, il a dansé dans des spectacles de variétés et des émissions de télévision. Il débute comme chorégraphe en 1999, avec Anonymous Society.
