Fantasy for Vibraphone was written to convey a sense of an epic fantasy. I intentionally avoided the instrument’s jazz roots and instead wrote the thematic material in the style of a film score. The opening four-bar theme starting at measure 34 should be played with clarity. It returns several times throughout in Gm, Cm, and Fm and should be treated with the same articulation each time. Be careful to bring out the melodic line in measures 71-74 and 82-86 and to give less presence to the repeated D and G pattern. In The “Ethereal” section starting at measure 136, feel free to cadence as you feel them but play written dynamics when expressed. The trading eight-bar 5/8 section beginning at measure 157 is a “call and response” with dynamics as expressed, but you are encouraged to emote within the dynamic. At the “Driving” section beginning at measure 203, an increase in intensity is desired; think forcefully, with determination. A slight increase in tempo may be applied as well. The final section is a recap of the first but is to be played with more energy. Be very careful that the last bar does not get covered by the previous; a clear brake in pedaling is recommended. Measure 289-293 is a brief quote from Rite of Passage, the first piece I wrote using vibraphone. As I encourage with all my music, play with as much individuality as can be applied.
