Mauveine, just like indigo, is a very popular fabric dye. After reading the document below and watching the video “Scienstorical: Perkin’s Mauve”, we will try to answer the question: “How was it discovered?” Do take notes during the video to be able to answer the questions! Document 1: Mauveine Mauveine, also known Perkin's mauve, was the first synthetic organic chemical dye, discovered serendipitously in 1856 by Henry William Perkins. It is also among the first chemical dyes to have been mass-produced.

A. Vocabulary 1. What is the meaning of the expressions underlined below? 

“You needed a hell of a lot of these snails”

“These tinny tiny little snails”

“It was sort of breaking havoc on the population”

2. Write a short paragraph summarizing the story of mauveine.

B. The story and the chemistry behind it 3. Regarding the synthesis process of Mauveine, make an educated guess to complete the following equations with the appropriate coefficients: a.

o-toluidine +

p-toluidine +

aniline  mauveine A

b.

o-toluidine +

p-toluidine +

aniline  mauveine B

4. What can o- and p-toluidine be qualified as? Can the same thing be said of mauveine A and B? Explain. 5. What particular property, other than its color, makes mauveine a good textile dye? Can you explain what this chemical phenomenon is due to?

Homework: Write, by groups of two or three, a 5 to 7 minutes long scene, that you will play in front of the class during next lesson (big bonus if you actually learn your lines and really play!). The subject from your scene must be chosen from le list below. Scene A: Perkin and his best friends (also chemists) explain the discovery to his supervisor, August Wilhelm Von Hoffman, and his colleagues. Scene B: Perkin and his best friends are negotiating with textile manufacturers to sell their discovery. Scene C: A group of friends, fond of fashion, discuss what a fashion breakthrough Perkin’s discovery is.
