Babakunde is a very rich man who lives in a big house, travels a lot for his business and has no time for anything else than his pursuit of making more money. Even when his friends die he has no time to go to their funereal. Babakunde will realise too late at his own expense that one cannot expect from others what you are not capable of giving yourself.
The snow has been falling all night and everything is white. However at the end of lake there is a little red dot that is moving. What is it? A fairy? A gnome? Or one of those big bad red wolves? That is the way the narrator is seeing things on that very same cold day surrounded by white snow. Sad thoughts because the narrator is cold and feels the tight grip of the winter. Fortunately the red dot that has not stopped moving and twisting, is soon becoming two legs, two arms a nice chapka and a big parka: it’s an ice-skater, a young girl dancing on ice.

PICTURE BOOKS ANNE HERBAUTS
Anne Herbauts was born somewhere in Brussels around 1975. She studied at the Academie des BeauxArts of Brussels illustrations and graphic novels. She has, since, published over 30 children’s (and adult’s) books and graphic novels. Some times she spreads herself over other types of writings, short movies, animated films, narrating spaces and huts.
Books mean time. Time is my material. Via vertical writings, piercings, suspensions, “pure time” I find the horizontal narration of the book. I play with the space-time of the book. The larger books have slow rhythms, deep breaths. You have the space to dip your stares, to plunge into the image. The text is part of the image. The smaller formats like Edouard and Armand, roll, bump into each other, they propel themselves from one page to the other. There is no space here for time or verticality. I think of the text and the image at the same time, it’s like a compact mass, that I hardly separate to be able to work on it in a practical way. I work the rhythm in the text, in the images, in the pages, in the book. I am part of the book, I smell the book, I build it. I write as if I was sculpting, nicking, cutting, quavering. This tingling produced by the writing is something close to the soul’s and body’s skin, to the thoughts.
She collects moon’s shavings and flakes of images. She draws empty spaces and absences with borders made of writing, with traces of evidence, by superimposing, by repetition, by stuttering. She loves short phrases and delectable words. She is eager and too big of it. She is not in the image or in the text but in both at the same time. In between, between the two and in her “work space”. Books and time are raw materials. Moons and wood shavings

INTERVIEW ANNE HERBAUTS
Writing-stamen that between text and image, filters, pierces, stings awakens. You never tell what, you pick around it so that it appears. So the more you try to get close, the more you kill what you want to show. The point is, that it is the whole where invisible things go through, and the mark, the stain that shows. Shape, detour, around, hole, point. With these recesses and marks, these blemishes of sound, of colours, of paper, of stitching, of language, I write my books. Something happens, Between the text and the images, Somewhere in the folds of the book, the stitching, the margins. The book is a space of paper, of couture and wind. There are pages, text, images. But most of all its fabric is time. Reading, enfolding, the gesture of turning the page inscribe themselves in the fourth dimension of this articulated object with elytra made of cardboard.

Why do leaves fall? How do clouds form? What are those rare vegetables growing in the garden? Why is it so cold? How do snowflakes form? This book explains weather conditions through the day-to-day life of a little boy in kindergarten. Halfway between fiction and documentary, the book is completed by fact sheets, definitions, recipes, nursery rhymes and a “Do you know?” section.
Many photographs and images add nicely to this interesting and informative text.
