Forgotten Time (1989) Choreography by Judith Jamison Restaged by Masazumi Chaya Music by Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares Original Costumes by Judith Jamison & Ellen Mahlke Costumes Recreated by Judith Jamison Lighting by Timothy Hunter In Judith Jamison’s quietly uplifting work, the haunting, otherworldly sounds of Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares channels 12 dancers on a journey through ancient rituals of love and tribal rites of passage. Moments of complex partnering, dramatic imagery and breathtaking stillness are part of a sophisticated choreographic structure that evokes deep emotions and echoes with universal significance. Jamison’s choreography focuses on the bodies inner rhythms and impulses for movement while time and space contract and expand. The abstracted ritual movements are accentuated by the earth and skin toned lighting and matching flesh tone unitards that give the impression of sleek clay sculptures. “There is not one false note in the way Ms. Jamison has put her movement together here…the partnering for the six couples becomes impressively complex, the imagery increasingly dramatic.” - Anna Kisselgoff The New York Times “Forgotten Time has an internal logic of space-time and momentum with the bodies that constantly shift like desert sands, revealing pieces of lost civilization.” - J. I. Conklin The Sun (Baltimore)
