Lady Scarface

by Diane Ducret «These dames can kill with more than just their looks» Discover the women of the Mafia underworld: wives, mistresses and gangsters in their own right !

From the Chicago brothels to Hollywood, they are called

Ada and Mina Everleigh, “The Empresses of Vice”; Mary Margaret Collins, “the ‘Kiss of Death’ girl”; Louise Rolfe “the Blonde alibi”; Thelma Todd, and Virginia Hill : they are the companions of fortune and misfortune , of whisky, drugs and Al Capone’s interminable parties, of Bugsy Siegel and Lucky Luciano. Pursued by FBI head J. Edgar Hoover and Elliott Ness, they are the muses of the Prohibition. Runaways, rebels, free spirits, they have chosen to be “Lady Scarface”, in life and in death. Excerpt: “28 February 1938. The photographers crowd in, jostling each other against the opaque windows of the sedan that stops right in front of the pier. A blonde woman with wavy hair pulls up the collar of her fur coat, tugs on her leather gloves and tries to hide her face. But it’s impossible to hide when you’re the wife of the most notorious gangster in the country, Public Enemy No. 1. She extricates a nude leg from April 2016 the car, her black-heeled pumps dashing by the flashes and questions of the reporters. No comment, she doesn’t talk. You never talk when you’re the wife of a Mafioso. …. Mae Capone, the most mysterious and secretive of the Mob women, is the heir of a saga that commenced 3 decades earlier, when women, at the start of the 20th century, began a revolution by taking part in shady activities, and decided to take power in the illicit milieu, with or against the men.”

A World History of the Secret Services by Rémi Kauffer

A riveting chronicle, based on thirty years of research, that allows us to grasp the reality of the mysterious world of secret services around the world throughout history.

This

vast and definitive synthesis is divided into four main chronological sections: from antiquity to World War I, the interwar period, the Cold War, and the multipolar world of today. The book reveals an entire hidden world, from Hannibal and Caesar to the technological machineries of the 21st century. It focuses on agents in the field as well as on spy satellites, radio signal monitors, code busters in front of their documents and later their computer screens, infiltrators and mole hunters, operation coordinators and analysts in offices. It shows how the profession of espionage has persisted, the continuity of the basic techniques but also the acceleration of modern technologies. It highlights the national «cultures» of intelligence: a French agent does not operate in the same intellectual milieu as an Englishman, an American, a Russian or a Chinese spy. Above all, the book illustrates on every page the predominance of the human factor. It is crammed with revelations and little-known anecdotes: the birth of the Intelligence Service in the reign of Elizabeth I, Bismarck’s secret service, the early days of the Israeli services, the assassinations of opponents (Trotsky and others), the clashes around Germany’s Enigma encryption machine, the US deciphering Japanese codes, the Cambridge Five spying for the USSR, the Rosenberg affair, etc.

1917

by Jean-Yves Le Naour In the conflict that marks the true birth of the 20th century, 1917 was the decisive year, with its two international earthquakes - the revelation of American power and the Bolshevik Revolution.

The war was no longer national but becoming ideological, and it was in the process of getting away from the Europeans; meanwhile a new world was appearing, wedged between two messianisms: Wilsonian idealism and communism. 1917 was primarily the year of exhaustion, when everyone sought an honorable way out. The French government began talks with Berlin; Austria-Hungary, in the person of Charles I, approached the Allies to find a transactional solution; even Pope Benedict XV had his own peace project.

22/10/2015 420 pages

Jean-Yves Le Naour lends his narrative talent to the cause of History and recounts this year of impossible peace. Based on unpublished archives and mingling the experiences of ordinary citizens with those of high-ranking officials, his book presents a comprehensive picture. It does not spare the great figures that posterity has turned into monuments. The failure of Ribot, then president of the Council in the negotiations with Austria, the disreputable maneuvers of Clemenceau to reach power, all is revealed. History related in this manner is more sensational than fiction.

With a doctorate in history, Jean-Yves Le Naour is a leading French specialist on the Great

War. He is the author notably of Les soldats de la honte (Soldiers of Shame) (Perrin, 2011), for which he received the award for best history book in 2011, and of a series on World War I, with each year the topic of an authoritative volume.

Vigilantes

by Bruno Fuligni An imaginative foray into the stories of those who have chosen to take justice into their own hands : ‘‘vigilantes’’ from around the world.

Dismembered

bodies, devastated families: crimes of horrific savagery are terrorizing the country when young Antoine begins his studies at the Police Academy. A veteran professor of criminality will give him the keys to the mystery through twenty true stories, twenty historically attested crimes and inquiries, from every continent and from Antiquity to the present. It is an introduction to absolute evil. A demonologist, a lieutenant general of the police, a white king in the Pacific, a « Russian Sherlock Holmes », a policeman from the Malay jungle or a poetry-smitten morgue clerk : these are some of yesterday’s dispensers of justice who have come to the rescue of today’s lawmen. In an original text written with great precision, Bruno Fuligni navigates between fiction and historical reality to tell the story of a certain spirit of justice and the veritable know-how of the police that has developed over the centuries. • • • • • • • •

Hitler’s Men

by Jean-Paul Bled

From «useful idiots» to «victims», historian Jean-Paul Bled presents the portraits of 23 prominent personalities in Nazi Germany, in the tradition of Joachim C. Fest.

Because of Hitler’s personality and his absolute power, we

often overlook the role and the importance of the men who helped him rise. His top lieutenants - civilians as well as military, those who supported him in his evil enterprise - are at the center of this book, written by one of today’s top experts on Germany, Professor Jean-Paul Bled. Where did they come from? Who were they? What was their exact role in the Third Reich? What was the exact nature of their relationship with Hitler and how did it change over time? Through these twenty-three biographies, Bled answers these questions and gives us a unique perspective on these men, some of them unknown. «Useful idiots», the first circle, civilians, soldiers, artists and victims are all scrutinized in the author’s analysis. Les hommes d’Hitler is in the tradition of the famous work by German historian Joachim C. Fest, The Face Of The Third Reich: Portraits Of The Nazi Leadership.

Biography

Voltaire

by Pierre Milza A biography of the great French philosopher who championed tolerance and freedom of opinion.

Today more than ever, the name of

Voltaire is invoked to uphold freedom in the face of religious fanaticism. The author of the Treatise on Tolerance (1763) did indeed fight every battle in his century against obscurantism – his treatise on the Calas affair is the most famous instance. A gifted writer who produced works in almost every literary form, he was also an ambitious man who moved in those circles where power and wealth were dominant. But he never lost his independence of mind. Voltaire, for the duration of his eventful life, carried the rights of conscience and French rationality very high and far. His works were a torch in the age of enlightenment, and are still vividly universal today.

20/08/2015 1080 pages

The book, which has already sold more than 10,000 copies, “reads like a novel, 900 pages you don’t see going by, because you’re so taken by the character, the countless twists and turns, the single trajectory,” according to a review by Roger-Pol Droit in Le Monde des Livres.

Professor Emeritus at the Institute of Political Studies where he has influenced generations

of students, Pierre Milza has gained a large readership with his numerous and well-received books. For Perrin, he has written Verdi et son temps (Verdi and his Time, 2001), Napoléon III (2004) and the two volumes of L’Année terrible (1870-1871) (The Terrible Year, 2009).

Biography

Mazarin

by Gérard Montassier

Mazarin never left anyone indifferent, arousing as much admiration and adulation as long-lasting hatred. In this accessible portrait, the author brings to light, in particular, the international challenges the Cardinal faced.

Born

in 1602 into an Italian family, Mazarin had two avenues open to him to make his way in the world, the army or the church. He chose papal diplomacy. In 1630, Cardinal Richelieu decided his future by naming him cardinal. Mazarin became his mentor’s right hand and Richelieu, shortly before his passing, recommended him to Louis XIII. When the king died in 1643, Anne of Austria, the new regent, made Mazarin her chief minister. Politics and genuine affection united them. Mazarin co-ruled France from then on, waging war until the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648 put an end to the Thirty Years War and gave the country substantial territorial advantages. He then had to deal with the Fronde, the revolt of the parliament and the princes, requiring him to leave France twice while continuing to exercise power through the queen. He was acclaimed on his return in 1653 and thereafter governed single-handedly. He prepared Louis XIV to take on his kingly duties, and died in 1661, the year of the Treaty of the Pyrenees that brought peace between France and Spain.

Biography

La Fayette

by Jean-Pierre Bois Jean-Pierre Bois reveals the Marquis de La Fayette as a citizen of the world who spent his life seeking the golden mean of moderation – “Tocqueville with a sword”.

At age 20, a rather gauche and inexperienced young noble-

man, very rich and deeply in love with his wife, left France to fight for American freedom. The conflict, which ended four years later with the victory at Yorktown in 1781, earned young La Fayette the distinction of becoming one of eight honorary citizens of the United States of America. “I would have liked to have been a Gaul,” La Fayette once said. When he was 34 and the idol of the younger generation, he again devoted himself to the cause of liberty, this time in France, from July 1789 to July 1791. His devotion would last for the rest of his days; he never pledged allegiance to the Empire or the Restoration as did so many survivors of the great revolutionary era. In 1815, in his seventies and once more enjoying immense popularity, he was still serving freedom when he provoked the fall of Napoleon, and again when he became a Republi20/08/2015 can and helped establish a citizen monarchy in 1830, from 488 pages which he broke away shortly before his death in 1834. Frederick II: a Legendary Emperor by Sylvain Gouguenheim

An up-to-date portrait of Emperor Frederick II of Hohenstauffen, an exceptional figure in medieval history, by a world-renowned historian.

This book, based on German but also French and Italian

archives, establishes Sylvain Gouguenheim as the unrivalled expert on the emperor and his accomplishments. Stupor Mundi - the emperor who stunned the world - in the words of a contemporary chronicler, Frederick II of Hohenstaufen (1194-1250) exercised his power in rapidly changing times. During his tumultuous reign, he displayed qualities that place him among the most fascinating rulers of all Western medieval history.

20/08/2015 488 pages

Dominating Germany, Italy and the Kingdom of Jerusalem, standing up to radical opposition from the Pope, Frederick left an image that immediately took on mythical proportions. By not focusing on this persona, or on speculation about the emperor’s psychology, but by concentrating on a study of his reign without preconceptions or anachronisms, Sylvain Gouguenheim considerably renews our knowledge of Frederick II.

“Who better than the historian Sylvain Gouguenheim

- who knows the Germanic world so well – to offer us a brilliant biography of Frederic II, who between the 12th and 13th centuries, wore the crowns of no less than three kingdoms: Sicily, - LIRE Jerusalem and The Holy Roman Empire.

A recognized medievalist and a professor of

history at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Lyon, Sylvain Gouguenheim is the author of several books including Les Chevaliers Teutoniques (The Teutonic Knights) (Tallandier, 2008) and Tannenberg 15 Juillet 1410 (Tallandier, 2012). He is a top specialist on Germany in the Middle Ages.

Biography

Isaac Babel

by Adrien Le Bihan

The biography of a major figure of Soviet literature, known worldwide for his Red Cavalry and Odessa Tales.

The

life of Isaac Babel remains mysterious, subject to unfounded interpretations and rife with tall tales that Babel, with his gift for mystification, sometimes invented himself. Based on Russian, Polish, French and American sources and the author’s extensive knowledge of the Soviet world, the book follows Babel from Odessa to Moscow, observes his adventures during the Russo-Polish war of 1920 and his reporting in Ukraine and the Caucasus, and continues in France, where Babel lived at three separate intervals. It explores his associations, worthy and unworthy, with literature, the Red Army and the secret police, and reveals a tormented love life that reflected Babel’s profound instability. The author sheds light on Babel’s successive literary and film works by carefully calibrating them with events in Russia from 1917 to 1939; he shows how they were both encouraged and undermined by the regime that the Bolsheviks, and particularly Stalin, imposed on the country. This biography thus follows the itinerary of a great writer who was in turn threatened and protected until the final tragedy, which the author elucidates.

“Up to now, as far as we know, there existed no literary or political biography of Isaac Babel, in French. It is therefore a must to read this brilliant one by Adrien Le Bihan and then to devour Babel’s RED CAVALRY. ” - LIRE -

Biography

Reagan

by Françoise Coste Based on unpublished documents from the library of the Ronald Reagan Foundation in California, the portrait of the man whose political movement shaped the United States of today.

At the end of

World War II, as the American left triumphed, conservative leaders spotted in the moderately wellknown movie actor Ronald Reagan a unique charisma and ideological flexibility that made him ideal for the role of principal spokesman for their cause. The man who would become governor of California in 1966 and President of the United States from 1980 to 1988 can thus be seen as the political creation of an ideological movement that has profoundly changed the American political landscape for half a century.

10/09/2015 488 pages

The long conquest of the White House, then Reagan’s two terms, truly ended one world and inaugurated a new one. This world is avowedly conservative, both economically and culturally, consisting of an essentially white, Christian and Southern Republican party, and an extremely aggressive presidential institution with respect to other branches of the federal government. Finally, regarding foreign policy, Reagan embodied a hard line, especially towards the USSR; he accelerated the decline of the Soviet regime and precipitated its fall.

A historian whose specialty is the United States and particularly US domestic policies,

Françoise Coste teaches at the University of Toulouse. She is the author of La présidence des Etats-Unis de Franklin Roosevelt à George W. Bush (1933-2006): L’empire de l’exécutif (The Presidency of the United States from Franklin Roosevelt to George W. Bush (1933-2006): The Empire of the Executive) (Editions du Temps, 2007).

Nicolas II and Alexandra of Russia by Jean des Cars

An illustrated biography of the last Russian tsar and his family, by the bestselling French specialist of European monarchies.

Nearly a century ago, the massacre of

the imperial family of Russia, on the night of July 16 to 17, 1918, horrified the world. Today, the last Tsar, Nicolas II, his wife Alexandra, their four daughters and their son, who were canonized in 2003 by the Orthodox Church for their «Christian behavior», are the objects of popular veneration. We often forget that the imperial couple, deeply in love, had experienced family traumas in their youth that scarred them for life. Even at their marriage, celebrated awkwardly when the Court was in full mourning after the untimely death of Alexander III, their happiness was overshadowed by the heavy burden of the Russian Empire. In private, the Tsarina lived in terror of the hemophilia 03/09/2015 threatening her little boy’s life. As for the new tsar, he fell 529 pages short of expectations from the beginning. After his father’s authoritarianism, it was hoped the 26-year-old son would show a certain liberalism, some concern for the people’s suffering. The disappointment was great. Nicolas II was an autocrat, true to the rigorous politics of Alexander III, for better or worse.

Jean des Cars is the historian of the great European dynasties and their most illustrious

representatives. His works are widely translated, particularly in Central Europe. Among his greatest hits, all published by Perrin: Sissi ou la Fatalité (Sissi or Fate) (2005); La Saga des Romanov (The Saga of the Romanovs) (2008); La Saga des Habsbourg (The Saga of the Habsburgs)(2010); La Saga des Windsor (The Saga of the Windsors) (2011); La Saga des reines (The Saga of the Queens) (2012), La Saga des favorites (The Saga of the Favorites) (2013) and Le Sceptre et le Sang (Of Blood and Scepter) (2014).

The Last Days of the Kings

edited by Patrice Gueniffey

The illustrated version of a major bestseller (25,000 copies).

Released in January 2014, Les derniers jours des rois brought

together the best contemporary historians to recount the end of the most illustrious French monarchs. The book received unanimous critical acclaim in the media and was a major hit with readers, selling some 25,000 copies. This album duplicates the superb presentation by Patrice Gueniffey and the twelve most emblematic chapters, illustrated with a hundred informative, often spectacular illustrations. The subject lends itself particularly well to a powerful visual approach, given the impact of royalty on the collective imagination as well as the numerous paintings, engravings and other illustrations inspired by the demise of great monarchs, particularly when they came to a tragic end, like St. Louis, Henry IV, Louis XVI or Napoleon. A handsome backdrop for a definitive work, with the following table of contents:

A history of the Iranian revolution

result of thirty years of study and reflection, this extraordinary book provides an animated account of the fall of the last Persian emperor and a dissection of what caused his collapse. At the same time, the authors, father and son, members of the imperial family and the great Iranian diaspora, give us their analysis of the Islamic Revolution. The book is a joint effort, using notes and information gathered in the heat of the action by Christian Pahlavi, who was a first-hand witness of the revolutionary process. It restores the complete and accurate chronology of the events (including the downfall and death of the Shah, the rise of Khomeini, the Islamic reign of terror and the American hostage crisis) that forged the destiny of Iran from 1977 to 1979. in 1551, Vincent de Paul as a young priest was captured by Barbary pirates and spent two years in bondage. On his return, he became the chaplain of Marguerite de Valois, pastor of Clichy parish, and tutor to the children of Emmanuel de Gondi, general of the galleys, thus making his way in Parisian society and winning over to his cause a large number of wealthy ladies. His relationship of trust and friendship with Gondi led to his appointment as Chaplain General of the Galleys. He became renowned for his compassion and zealous efforts to improve the lot of imprisoned galley-slaves. In 1617, he founded the first Confraternity of Charity, out of which grew the Daughters of Charity, run by Louise de Marillac. In 1624, he was made principal of the College des Bons Enfants, which led him to found the Congregation of the Priests of the Mission. The priests were based at the priory of Saint-Lazare, hence their name of Lazarists (or Vincentians). In the following years, he established an array of charitable institutions, all aimed at alleviating the suffering of the poor. Under the regency of Anne of Austria, he was named to the Council of Consciousness and had a say in episcopal appointments. An exceptional personality because of his charisma, his tireless energy and his spiritual influence, Vincent de Paul died in 1660 in the odor of sanctity. He was canonized less than a century later.

backlist Victor-Emmanuel III

A King facing Mussolini

by Frédéric Le Moal Based on previously unpublished archives, written by a leading expert on early 20th century Europe, the book traces the decline of Italy’s « last » king, from the rise of the fascist dictatorship to the break with Nazi Germany.

Victor-Emmanuel III became king in 1900 after the assassination

of his father Umberto I and remained on the throne for fortysix years, eventually abdicating under pressure from the Allies in 1946. The first decade of his reign was characterized by a return to the regime’s parliamentary practices, suspended by his father, and seemed to portend a reconciliation between the Crown and liberalism. In 1915, his support of the movement favoring Italy’s participation in the ongoing conflict was decisive against the proponents of neutrality. Once Italy was at war, Victor Emmanuel III became the soldier-king, present at the front but not meddling in military affairs. February 2015 Italy emerged victorious from the war in 1918 but was mistreated 560 pages at the Peace Conference in Paris. The fascist movement emerged from the crisis, contributing to the political destabilization of the kingdom and maintaining a climate of latent civil war. When Mussolini decided to make his bid for power, he ran up against an inescapable reality: the political clout of the Crown. In 1922, Victor Emmanuel III appointed Mussolini Prime Minister, the first step in the establishment of the fascist dictatorship, which lasted twenty years. During this period, the king disappeared into the shadows and never hindered Mussolini’s actions. The king endorsed Italy’s entry into war against France and the United Kingdom in 1940. It was not until 1943 that the sovereign decided to depose Il Duce. He tried, once peace returned, to ensure a smooth transition for his son Umberto, so that the crown he received would be as solid as possible. He finally retired in 1946, before settling in exile in Egypt, where he died in 1947.
