V1 - EXTRATERRESTRIAL… OR JUST ABOUT!

At fourteen, Aurélie Laflamme doesn’t feel particularly close to anyone. Since her father died, her mother has become some sort of a zombie, except all of a sudden, she’s back to life (and even wearing edgy underwear!). Could there be a connection with Denis Beaulieu, the school principal? (OMG!) As for her best friend, Kat, love has rendered her brain uncharacteristicly mushy. No way that’s happening to her, neither! But it seems no one is truly safe from love at first sight... And in the middle of all this chaos, there’s only one thing Aurélie really wants: to find her place in the universe.

All’s well in Aurélie’s life! Total harmony reigns in her family (if you exclude the differences of opinion she still maintains with her mother about how to run the household). In addition, since she started dating a popular guy, her social life has been turned upside down. New friends, the respect of her peers, going out, getting away with cracking jokes in class... What more could she ask for? Nothing. Except maybe a paranormal power to divide herself in two. Because in addition to learning to balance her school, family, love and social lives, she needs to open up to new areas of interest (the sports played by her boyfriend), manage her image (so she can get accepted by her new group), but, above all, remain herself (not easy in the midst of all this craziness). Before celebrating her sixteenth birthday, Aurélie has a whole list of things to get done: finish her senior year (mandatory for getting into a good university), find a job (mandatory according to her mother), pack (mandatory according to the movers) and above all, remain calm. Moreover, she has to mentally prepare for a few days of camping (an activity she hates) with her grandparents. But what if she decided to actually stay there and learn to live totally in the wild? After all, despite the presence of potentially dangerous animals, the lack of Internet connection and the existence of a few really giant spiders, the great outdoors can be beneficial to just about anyone (especially if you want to get really far away from a new home you didn’t ever really want to inhabit...). Even if big-time changes are sometimes terrifying, it’s time for Aurélie to stow away her fears, pack up her troubles and look forward to the future.

If she imagined she’d be spending the summer in a totally peaceful place (just shy of depressing), listening to the sparrows chirping and watching earthworms performing their traditional mating dances, in all actuality, a host of adventures await her.

Aurélie is entering into her final year of high school. Since everything’s been going okay in her personal life, she really wants to concentrate on her studies. But her attention is easily diverted from her academic ambitions—and not only because some YouTube clips are downright hilarious—especially when everyone around her begins to act mysteriously! Her mother, with whom she seemed to have reached an unprecedented level of peace and harmony, changes—in a way that is just as subtle as it is incomprehensible—into an absolute monster. Her best friend starts acting bizarre around her ex. Aurélie quickly discovers that having a boyfriend, even if he’s the one we’ve dreamed of forever, can definitely complicate things.
