Héloïse Guay de Bellissen LES ENFANTS DE CHOEUR DE L’AMÉRIQUE (AMERICA’S CHOIR BOYS)

N O V E L

T H E AU TH O R Les Enfants de chœur de l’Amérique is Héloïse Guay de Bellissen’s second novel. In the first, Le Roman de Boddah (Fayard 2014, Pocket 2016), she told a tale of another pair of wild kids: Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love. T H E BO O K In 1980, in the space of four months, Mark David Chapman assassinated John Lennon and John Hinckley fired a shot at Ronald Reagan from almost point blank range. Chapman and Hinckley: at first sight, there’s nothing in common except that they were both aged 25 and came from middle-class backgrounds. Nothing except their all-consuming passion for The Catcher in the Rye and its hero, Holden Caufield. They both like teens, only teens. They were wary of fathers who drank too much and hysterical mothers. But perhaps Chapman and Hinckley are simply the lost offspring of an America hungry for young flesh, bucks and fame. The two angel-faced killers recount their childhood. Chapman: a little fat guy who invented friends. Hinckley: as a student he was a loner, crazy about Jodie Foster, the kid who played in Taxi Driver and saved him from a dull, uneventful life. As for Holden Caufield, he’s sick of being locked in the minds of those weirdos who confiscated his life by reading The Catcher in the Rye. Sick to the teeth of Salinger, the selfish, silent genius who keeps him walled up in an eternal adolescent rage. He’d like Salinger to write a follow-up. He’d like to grow up… But not Hinckley or Chapman. The claim they shot their victims out of love. Too much love for sure - an obsessional love for themselves. The story was just too beautiful, and too tragic… Héloïse Guay de Bellissen couldn’t resist making a novel out of it, telling the story of two idolatrous souls of our times, fervent and tormented.

ABOUT Le Roman de Boddah (Prix Méditerranée des lycéens 2014): “One of this Fall’s surprising successes, this story of a passionate love between two overgrown kids brought together by music but ravaged by heroin and melancholy has already spread like wildfire thanks to its captivated readers.” L’Humanité “Pages so beautiful you want to kick them.” L’Officiel “Reading this novel is as enjoyable as listening to a concert backstage.” Le Nouvel Observateur

N O V E L

“A perfectly mastered exercise in virtuosity, Le Roman de Boddah is this Fall’s most delightful surprise.” Livres Hebdo Les enfants de chœur de l’Amérique “Cleverly constructed, written in a chic, colloquial style, driven by a demythifying urge, the form the author chose to give this novel was a bit of a gamble. Original, cunning, it will make you want to listen to Instant Karma all over again.” Livres Hebdo “What audacity to seize that unique voice [Holden Caulfield’s], revered all over the world, and put it into her own book. That is undoubtedly the most splendid achievement of Héloïse Guay de Bellissen’s second novel.” Le Monde des Livres

Lionel Stoleru LES IRIS JAUNES (THE YELLOW IRISES)

N O V E L

TH E AU TH O R Lionel Stoleru was a minister under Valéry Giscard d’Estaing and François Mitterrand, for whom he inaugurated the RMI (Revenu minimum d’insertion) – a form of minimum social revenue. He has written a dozen books on the economy. As a conductor, he created the Orchestre romantique européen, which he conducts every month in the Salle Gaveau. TH E BO O K Madame de Saint-Fulgent is a widow with two children and works as a reader in a publishing house, les Éditions Delmont. One day, she makes an appointment to see her doctor after receiving a bouquet of yellow irises with a note thanking her for the evening before. She is perplexed, for she’s quite certain she stayed at home all that evening. Over time, she returns regularly to see her GP, because there have been more inexplicable incidents in her life. Conscious that something is not quite right, she agrees to let her doctor, in conjunction with a psychiatrist, look into her case. In reality, Madame de Saint Fulgent is labouring under the oppressive weight of memories she has buried in her subconscious: her husband’s suicide after the collapse of the publishing house he ran; her father’s appalling role during the war; the trauma of her mother, who strangled her sister. So begins a long, psychoanalytical investigation, bringing to the surface the painful past that Madame de Saint Fulgent imagined she had interred forever. Strongly inspired by the work of Stefan Zweig, this book will grip readers till the very last page. “Readers will devour this 150-page account of Mme. de Saint-Fulgent’s journey to her inner self. A lady who moved in the best circles, her portrait – so smooth at the outset – gradually cracks as she moves back in time in search of her memories”. Actualité juive

(THE FAVOURITE) TH E A UT HOR Valérie Nivet-Doumer is a literary critic for the cultural site Culture-Tops, partner of the news site Atlantico. Le Préféré is her first novel. TH E BOOK Tom is four years old when his parents return from Brazil, on Christmas Day, with a new baby, Ben. They place him under the Christmas tree - a present for Tom. As the years go by, his mother’s obvious preference for Ben only increases. Tom tries to be the model son that his parents might grow to love, but in vain! The breaking point comes when Tom, a student at Sciences Po, falls in love with a girl. When his brother falls for her too, their mother asks Tom to give her up. Seeking to understand why his mother rejects him, Tom sets off for Brazil, his only clues being Ben’s birth certificate and the name of his biological mother, whom he hopes to track down.

Anaïs Maquiné-Denecker @Julia InsideTV

POUR QUELQUES MINUTES DE CÉLÉBRITÉ (FOR FIFTEEN MINUTES OF FAME)

N O V E L

TH E AU T H O R Anaïs Maquiné-Denecker is a journalist and an executive TV producer. This, her first novel, is set behind the scenes of this fascinating world. TH E BO O K Julia Bouvier, a young graduate in journalism, has just landed her first job in charismatic and cynical Jenny Laurens’ audio-visual production company. As the woman behind France’s most watched talk show Between Ourselves, Laurens attributes the success of her productions to the ‘A-list’ guests that appear on them. Which is why, when Julia finds herself in charge of casting these shows, she is obliged to breach the code of professional ethics she’d sworn to uphold in order to meet her boss’s trashy selection criteria. With biting humour, she describes the secrets behind the making of TV programmes as well as the often disconcerting character traits of the men and women in the media: such as Bruno de Montalembert, the presenter of an investigative programme and a man who’s never ventured beyond the city ring road yet who nevertheless has very fixed ideas about the outside world; or Gwendoline, a reality TV star and darling of the press who’ll do anything to prolong her fifteen minutes of fame; or Paul, the junkie, alcoholic chief editor of a summer programme who sexually harasses his young recruits and drags them off to seedy group-sex clubs … How will someone as young and innocent as Julia find her place in this community where misgivings are unknown? Although her family regularly brings her down to earth with a bump, Julia does the unthinkable and lures her partner and her best friend into the murky bowels of this dream factory we call television, at the risk of losing them forever.

Valérie Saubade LE PACTE DES INNOCENTES (THE INNOCENTS’ PACT)

TH E A UT HOR Valérie Saubade, 49, lives in Bordeaux, where she teaches French to foreign students at the Alliance française. Editions Anne Carrière has already published five of her novels: Happy birthday grand-mère, Les Petites Sœurs, Marche arrière, Miss Sweety and Un bref moment d’égarement. TH E BOOK Blewbury is a sleepy little Oxfordshire village famous for its 11th-century church, bucolic parks and charming rural cottages. Its retirement home, the ‘Key Fields Estate’, welcomes wealthy residents, some of whom seek only peace and quiet, others in search of recognition, love and even redemption… But who is sending these anonymous, hate-filled letters of a religious connotation to the town’s mayor and his assistants? And why was Mrs. Dawson, a discreet, elderly, Key Fields resident and keen knitter, found dead with a ball of wool stuffed down her throat? Karen Stanner, born in Blewbury and newly promoted to sergeant, has just taken up her post in the police station. She’s given a cool reception by her superior, Inspector Reeves, and finds she has her work cut out to make her place in this all-male world – quite a challenge for Karen, who has a complex about being too tall and is pathologically shy. As a result of many failed romances, she’s decided to remain single, seeking refuge in the solitude of her little apartment and taking up yoga. The poison-pen letters become increasingly menacing and more murders are committed. A killer who targets old ladies is terrorising the town. Following her feminine intuition and despite her colleagues’ incredulity, Karen refutes the theory that the murderer is choosing his victims at random – an instinct that leads her to discover a secret pact made sixty years earlier.

Philippe Cavalier HOBBOES (HOBBOES)

AFTER LES AVENTURES DU MARQUIS D’ORGÈVES, PHILIPPE CAVALIER RETURNS TO THE SUPERNATURAL WITH HOBBOES, A VISIONARY, LABYRINTHINE NOVEL INFUSED WITH EPIC GRANDEUR.

T H R I L L E R

CFORT 2015 v2.indd 12

TH E AU T H O R Philippe Cavalier is the author of the 4-volume Le Siècle des chimères (2005-2008), Une promenade magique dans Paris (Anne Carrière 2010) and Le Marquis d’Orgèves (3 volumes and complete story, 2011). He lives in Paris. T H E BO O K The world’s mechanism starts to go haywire and no-one can be sure of anything anymore. For many, it’s the end of affluence and ease. With no work and no prospects, millions of newly-impoverished folks are cast out into the street, confusedly seeking new hope, a new guide. These are times of forgers and liars, oracles and saviours. Perhaps… On the Canadian coast, the inhabitants of a small fishing village hurl themselves from the clifftops into the sea. In Mexican shanty towns, the illiterate express themselves in a language whose origins are unknown. In the mountains of Dakota, an army of down-and-outs flock to a stranger, some claiming he’s a god, others fearing he might be the Devil. Far outside the cities, whose dwellers refuse to accept that things are no longer as they used to be, saints and corruptors desperately seek the child-prophet who will separate the wheat from the chaff. Passive and sheltered, Professor Raphael Banes is still blithely unaware that these events are already part of his destiny. A destiny that will demand sacrifices he couldn’t even imagine… A Road book, a terror-laden adventure novel, a reflection on the future of our society, a personal drama and a path to redemption… Hobboes blends a palette of genres and references to depict the epic fresco of our world’s ordeal of re-enchantment. From the depths of chaos the legends that forge our future are born; but for every hero there is a monster, and for every Grail there is an indelible Stain. Philippe Cavalier’s talent lies in keeping his hero perilously suspended between these two extremes right up to the last page…

Jérôme Fansten MANUEL DE DRAMATURGIE À L’USAGE DES ASSASSINS

(DRAMATURGICAL HANDBOOK FOR SCREENWRITERS AND ASSASSINS) TH E A UT HOR Jérôme Fansten, born in 1974, was a graphic designer before becoming a scenarist, and is currently busy working on several feature films. Editions Anne Carrière published his previous novels, Les Chiens du paradis and Les Chiens du purgatoire. TH E BOOK A pair of twins share the same life and the same identity. After a vicious gang rape, their mother shut herself away from the world, profoundly traumatised by the experience. In her home, she gave birth to two sons, but officially registered the birth of only one child. From there on, each boy in turn plays the role of the only son, alternating from one day to the next. Their mother’s trauma and social phobia inevitably causes the boys to question their bizarre half-existence. But they find a purpose to their lives: to seek vengeance! Five men raped their mother: one of them is necessarily their father. More than thirty years after their birth, the brothers decide it’s time to put their plans into action: they track down the first of the rapists, watch him, observe his movements, find a way into his life – then murder him. When the story begins, we find the brothers slaying the second of their mother’s violators. The brothers’ common identity is ‘Jérôme Fansten’: French scenarist and novelist, according to his Wikipedia page. The brothers refer to him as ‘the entity’. Whenever one of the brothers is actually executing one of their mother’s attackers, the other is seen in public. Officially, they are the one and the same person – the entity, ‘Jérôme Fansten’. And the entity always has a cast-iron alibi. So in a way, this is a tale of vengeance, but it is also a love story, because one of the brothers falls head over heels for a woman and he’s not ready to share her with anyone. Ultimately, it is a search for the truth, as the police investigation into the first two murders reveals inconsistencies even in the mother’s account…

Ghislain Gilberti LE BAL DES ARDENTES

(THE BALL OF THE BURNING MEN)

T H R I L L E R

TH E AU TH O R Ghislain Gilberti is the author of Dynamique du chaos, an on-line thriller that has enjoyed immense popularity for many years now. Editions Anne Carrière published his Le Festin du Serpent in 2013, winner of the Grand Prix France Bleu des lecteurs, the Prix découverte Polars Pourpres and runner-up in the Prix du meilleur polar francophone, and in 2014, Le Baptême des ténèbres. Working in the contemporary noir novel, he plumbs the darkest recesses of society in order to fuel his incisive, realistic and sombre tales. T HE BOOK In the heart of Marseilles, an extremely violent bomb attack destroys an entire building, claiming many victims. Superintendent Ange-Marie Barthélemy, of the anti-terrorist division known as SDAT, is immediately dispatched to the scene to lead an investigation with massive repercussions, a veritable massacre. The initial results of the investigation lead him to believe that this act, for which no group has claimed responsibility, is related to drug trafficking. From then on, flanked by his ‘pack’ of cohorts, Barthélemy studies the local biotope and immerses himself in the ruthless milieu of Marseilles’ organised crime. With the help of an Interpol agent and a specialist group of post-explosion crime scene analysts, the team notices that the bomb-poser has already struck on every continent, his profile being closer to that of a serial killer than a terrorist. Meticulous modus operandi, signing his attacks, monomania… the man proves to be a dangerous psychopath, grotesquely baptising his death-bringing contraptions by engraving female first names in the steel. A high-speed chase to hunt down this ‘phantom’ killer is set in motion with the help of the local police, and Superintendent Cécile Sanchez is brought in to buttress Barthélemy’s investigation. “We rediscover the author’s dark universe and highly personal style: a meticulously constructed police investigation, flowing narrative, characters portrayed in a few lines, not one superfluous sentence, no pointless dialogue; and thoroughly researched in advance.” Le Télégramme de Brest

T H E AU T H O R Marie Lopez is 20 and lives in Lyon. In 2011, she decided to take the plunge and venture into the world of YouTube by posting a video of hairdressing tips. 4 years and 300 videos later, Marie, under the name of EnjoyPhoenix, has become the leading female YouTube vloggers in France, with over 1,3 million subscribers. In March 2014, Marie did her first tour, visiting 15 towns in France and Belgium, with roughly 1,500 people turning up to meet her at each event. LESS ENJOYPHOENIX, MORE MARIE: ‘I’ve had one desire, the desire to tell a story, to share something different with you. Less videos, more words, less EnjoyPhoenix@, more Marie. That’s the reason for this book. A kaleidoscope of moments, Polaroid snaps… Don’t worry, it’s not a biography… at 19, who’s kidding who? Just a look, a spontaneous squint at topics that have been side-lined by the media, subjects that don’t grab the attention: feeling at ease with yourself when you have… a brace, or greasy hair, or bad acne, or if you’re being bullied at school or come from a broken home… and all the rest, the Net, social networks, it’s all in here, for better or for worse. With its wealth of anecdotes and shared secrets from the personal experience of a vlogger, this book is a way-out GPS for the logged-in young, an unpretentious miscellany, to help you avoid making the same mistakes… as me of course. And maybe save some time you haven’t got to waste. With hindsight and humour, an account of the often complex reality of being young, because to adults, a teenager’s life is a mystery.’ Sold in Portugal (Gradiva)

Peggy Sastre LA DOMINATION MASCULINE N’EXISTE PAS (MALE DOMINATION DOESN’T EXIST)

TH E A UT HOR Peggy Sastre is PhD in Science, specialising in Nietzsche and Darwin. Her works are mainly directed towards a biological interpretation of sexuaity. Her published works include Ex utero – pour en finir avec le féminisme (2009, La Musardine) and Le Sexe des maladies (2014, Favre). As a columnist and translator, she writes for various magazines and newspapers (Slate, L’Obs). TH E BOOK Man (with a small m and a penis of varying size) is a scumbag of the first order: he steals, rapes, hits, kills, refuses to wash his underwear and would rather die than live in a world where a skivvy can become a CEO. Or at least that’s the ‘official version’ of our history. The history of humanity is, so it’s claimed, the history of male domination, made by and for men who’ll do anything to keep women under their thumb. Except that this history is false – well at least in part. If men wield the power, it is because women have wanted it that way; throughout 99, 98% of our species’ history. And all through those millions of years that saw us slowly evolve into what we are today, they spent their time quivering in terror at the slightest hint of strength, power and brutality. Why? Because when your organism harbours ovaries and a uterus, when reproduction puts you in risk of mortal danger, as extreme as it is vital, and when you live in a hostile environment, these attributes are the best way of protecting both yourself and the fruit of your womb, and making sure you can pass on your genes to future generations. In other words, there is no male domination. Such an oppressive, vertical and unilateral system does not exist. What does exist is an evolutional history that has pushed both sexes to adopt distinct reproductive strategies. By analysing the principal areas of ‘male domination’ – academic and professional inequalities, harassment, family and conjugal violence, rape and sexual assaults, the culture of honour, aggressiveness, war and terrorism – this book not only shines a light on them that is radically new in our intellectual landscape, it also gives us a greater ability to understand and explain them, at the risk of facing up to the fact that woman haven’t come off too badly…

TH E AU T H O R Geneviève Peigné, a poet, founded the Samedi poésies Dimanche aussi festival in Nièvre after teaching literature in Poland, the West Indies and Algeria. She has authored two novels published by Jacqueline Chambon and has created several artist’s books in collaboration with Claude Stassart-Springer, Jean-Marie Queneau and Catherine Liégeois. TH E BO O K Simenon and Exbrayat as you’ve never read them before… A dying woman suffering from Alzheimer’s disease keeps a diary in the margins of ‘Le Masque’ detective novels. As her illness progresses, she gradually slips into the characters’ dialogues, responding to every line uttered by Miss Marple or Maigret. Some months after her death, her daughter discovers this collection of books and her mother’s pastime, which comes as a total surprise. Through her reading of these often very prosaic confessions on the subject of suffering, a posthumous conversation develops on the topic of books and writing, obliging the author to call her own life into question. Mohamed Bajrafil ISLAM DE FRANCE, L’AN I Il est temps d’entrer dans le xxie siècle

(FRENCH ISLAM, YEAR I – Time to Join the 21st Century) TH E A UT HOR Mohamed Bajrafil was born in 1978 in the Comoros. A Doctor of Linguistics, he teaches at Paris-Val de Marne University and is an imam in Ivry-sur-Seine. TH E BOOK Islam is a French obsession. France’s second religion, it is an object of fear, suspicion and rejection and has become a major question for the country’s future – one that the tragic January attacks this year turned into a burning issue. But France, the European country most heavily populated by Muslims, also occupies a central place in Islam’s destiny; and it is here, more than anywhere else, that the radical reform, so urgently needed, will emerge. Such is the conviction that forms the basis of this book - an ambitious attempt of rare intellectual scope to rethink the general mass of problems arising from Islam’s place in the contemporary world. Here, concerned for both his religion and his country of choice, Mohamed Bajrafil, theologian, imam and academic, issues a challenge to Muslims and non-Muslims, enjoining them to abandon their mutual ignorance that gives rise to all the hardened attitudes preventing either side from joining the 21st century, which ought be the century of co-existence, if we are to avoid mortal dangers. He demonstrates how we can only achieve this goal if believers cease to consider things as sacred when they are not, and reconnect with the true Islam, which is a far cry from the caricature that ill-informed and often Salafist-influenced imams present as revealed truth. But also on condition that non-Muslims agree to abandon the simplistic schema to which they have reduced this religion. What does the Koran really say? What obligations does it impose? How can we differentiate, in religious usage, between things that relate to faith and things that relate to culture and have the possibility to evolve? Returning to Islam’s innate tradition of debate and freedom of interpretation, ignoring all taboos, Mohamed Bajrafil, imam and academic, takes complete stock of all the issues arising from Islam’s place in the today’s world.

Marie L. Barret EPHÉMÈRE, VÉNALE ET LÉGÈRE (TRANSIENT, DECADENT AND FLIGHTY)

N A R R A T I V E

T H E AU T H O R Ephémère, vénale et légère is Marie L. Barret’s first book. T H E BO O K Marie L. Barret is a penname. The author, mother of two young children, is a prostitute who, after having worked in a humdrum profession which she eventually gave up of her own free will, officially set up business as a masseuse (a crystal-clear message to any small ads reader) in a picturesque house at the end of a country lane, near a village. The story she tells of her experience consists of appealing, sensitive and often affectionate portraits of her clients; seasoned, naturally, by precise descriptions of their sexual practices. An entire society is encapsulated in this book, but more especially dozens of individual little human lives. She adopts a frank, analytical approach, as rigorous and precise as her working hours, tariffs and the strictly professional context she insists on respecting in her job. She imposes a personal dissociation at every level, as her profession is a theatre where sexuality – a subject that interests her to the highest degree - affords her no pleasure whatsoever. No-one in her entourage knows the full extent of her existence, neither her family, nor of course her children, and not even her clients, who are unaware of Marie in her everyday life. The only people she has fully revealed herself to are her readers, as she amusingly observes. In the pages of this book we encounter the mysteries of human sexuality, encompassing not just male fantasies with their occasional naivety and wide variety of pleasures, but also what our bodies and desires reveal about us: the most precise, complete and true facets of our beings.
