FRENCH 3 Introduction Reading can be defined as “the act of decoding graphic material in order to determine its message.” To put it another way, reading consists of coming back to speech through its graphic symbols. In short, meanings reside in the sounds of the spoken language. Speaking a language is the necessary first step to acquiring the ability to read a language with meaning. The Readings for French 3, with instructions, will be found at the end of the program, on the last CD. You can do a Reading Lesson after every other unit or so, or wait until finishing all thirty units. Most of the material will be unfamiliar. The Readings for French 3 are intended to build on your vocabulary as well as provide reading practice. All lessons are accompanied by translations. However, it is recommended that you do the Readings first, sounding them out to check your pronunciation, before you refer to the translations.
