CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation Our Mission To engage the community and support CHU Sainte-Justine in its pursuit of excellence and its commitment to providing the children and mothers of today and tomorrow with one of the highest levels of healthcare in the world.

Our Code of Ethics We are committed to safeguarding the privacy and honouring the intentions of our donors as well as meeting the ongoing needs and priorities of CHU Sainte-Justine.

Our Values Love of children Family Generosity Excellence Leadership Ethics

We are dedicated to protecting our donors’ interests and ensuring a maximum of transparency in order to maintain their trust and work with them, year after year, to build a healthier Quebec. In 2014, the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation was the first healthcare organization in Quebec to receive official accreditation from the Imagine Canada Standards Program, the aim of which is to promote best practices, strong governance and transparency in Canadian charities.

Imagining the Future The healthy future we dream about for each of our children has evolved tremendously since Sainte-Justine was founded in 1907. The first philanthropists were galvanized by the alarming statistic that one child out of four died before reaching their first birthday. Today, more than a century later, our reality is much different, and our hopes of healing more children are coming true before our very eyes, or are within our grasp. And that’s because of you. And the power of your philanthropic support. You believe in the fundamental importance of knowledge. This year, the CHU Sainte-Justine Research Centre celebrated its 40th anniversary, with even more breakthroughs making their way from bench to bedside. Soon, this work will be done in a brand-new, ultramodern building. This is where new treatments will be developed and where our dreams for the future will take shape, thanks to your generosity. In December, the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation appointed a new President and Chief Executive Officer: Maud Cohen. I wish her a very warm welcome. Together, we promise to continue to do everything in our power to earn your loyalty and make sure our children and mothers-to-be receive the best healthcare in the world. Thank you, one and all!

My arrival at the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation coincided almost to the day with the halfway point of the ambitious undertaking that is the Healing More Better campaign. This forward-looking initiative is in full swing and I am poignantly aware, as I know you are, just how vital it is to dedicate all our energies to the health of our mothers-to-be and children and to our future as a society. Thank you for welcoming me into the Sainte-Justine family! I’m proud to be here, working side by side with you. This year, once again you have enabled the Foundation to achieve tremendous results, which will benefit tens of thousands of children. Your contributions, for example, toward the future Centre for Rare Genetic Disorders, will affect 50,000 children across Quebec living with these conditions. And then there’s the Jonathan Bouchard Intellectual Disability Research Chair, the first initiative of its kind in Canada, that will offer hope to 160,000 children and adults throughout the province. These projects, and others on the horizon, have had, and will continue to have, a life-changing impact on families throughout Quebec and elsewhere. And you – the young and young-at-heart, families, foundations and businesses – are the ones who have made them possible. We hope that you feel our enormous appreciation as you read through the pages to follow. Together, we can imagine a better future for our mothers-tobe and our kids. Together, we can build a healthier tomorrow. Thank you!

CHU Sainte-Justine An Institution with Heart and Vision

The leading mother-child centre in Canada and one of the four largest pediatric hospitals in North America

80% of Quebec pediatricians are trained at Sainte-Justine 5 out of 10 children are referred to Sainte-Justine for specialized care, half of whom come from outside the Montreal area

More than 5,600 employees, including 502 physicians, dentists and pharmacists and more than 1,500 registered nurses Over 300 volunteers Canada’s second largest pediatric research centre, with more than 200 researchers on staff More than 3,500 students and interns

70,000 visits to the emergency room and over 200,000 visits to outpatient clinics 3,300 births, nearly 60% of which involve high-risk pregnancies Over 18,000 hospital admissions Over 11,000 operations on young patients 484 beds, including those at the Marie Enfant Rehabilitation Centre

Building Tomorrow Together The past year at Sainte-Justine has been marked by one major achievement after another and the launch of several large-scale projects, all with a focus on innovation. Whether it be the creation of the Centre of Excellence for Rare Genetic Disorders, the establishment of the first Integrated Mother-Child Centre for Eating Disorders or the development of a revolutionary surgical technique for treating scoliosis, each of these initiatives has aimed to better address the needs of patients and their families and, in so doing, help us be more effective in fulfilling our mission. Other accomplishments enable us to look to the future and build it together. For example, the creation of Canada’s first Intellectual Disability Research Chair will make it possible to gain a better understanding of the genetic basis of intellectual disability and empower scientists to develop new treatment strategies. Moreover, for children who are at increased risk of developing heart disease, a leading-edge nutritional platform has been set up to enrich the CIRCUIT cardiovascular health program and support them and their families in their efforts to improve their daily eating habits. Yet another piece of good news: a new Research Chair in Cardiovascular Genetics has been established to serve as an incubator for research into heart disease, including rare pathologies, to shed light on the as-yet-unknown causes of these conditions and ultimately to develop suitable courses of treatment.

At the same time as these game-changing efforts were taking shape, thanks to the generosity of donors to the Healing More Better campaign, some key stages of our ambitious Growing Up Healthy initiative were finalized this past year, and the countdown is now on for bringing the entire project to fruition, with the operationalization of several new facilities. By increasing the size and capacity of our infrastructure, we will make it possible to maximize the quality of care, research and expertise, in line with our mission. Beyond the bricks-and-mortar aspect of the project, Growing Up Healthy has been a journey – a remarkably human journey that will give expectant mothers and children across the province faster and more direct access to the latest scientific and medical breakthroughs. Thanks to your support, we are steadily moving forward toward a better tomorrow. Year after year, our donors are essential partners in developing and implementing Sainte-Justine’s vision of excellence. The philanthropic community’s tremendous enthusiasm for Healing More Better will help bring in the best scientists, clinicians and young talent in the immediate future to make the most of these new facilities. Your collaboration and your unwavering commitment are what will empower us to imagine the future and build it together.

“We want her to be able to look after herself and her basic needs when we’re no longer around.”

Imagining the Future:

Talia Talia was born with a severe form of a congenital heart defect known as tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). She is only 12 years old, but her life has already been fraught with challenges. She underwent her first angioplasty before she was even a week old. Talia showed no sign of neurological activity – no reflexes, no reaction to pain, nothing. Her tiny pulmonary arteries needed to be cleared, and fast. But the procedure failed and her oxygen levels plummeted to 25%. The next procedure was critical and gave her a 50/50 shot at having a decent quality of life. Talia made it through her first year with a 75% blood oxygen level. The repercussions on her cognitive development were inevitable. With her indomitable fighting spirit, she underwent three open-heart surgeries, the last of which, in 2005, went for

29 hours straight – from Wednesday morning to Thursday afternoon. Just thinking about it is exhausting. But Talia defied the odds and pulled through like a champion. Today, she is cheerful and animated. She marvels at the world around her – almost as much as people marvel at her. And above all else, she loves going to school. Her parents are amazed at her resilience. Her mother points out how happy Talia is. “So what am I supposed to do, sit down beside her and cry? No way!” As Talia grows, she spends less and less time at the hospital. In an effort to help other children achieve their full potential, her parents, Alex Vahe and Carla Nahabedian, have raised more than $135,000 since 2013 for the CINC neurocardiology investigation clinic, run by Dr. Nancy Poirier and Dr. Lionel Carmant. Their gratitude knows no bounds.

Your Impact on Talia… and So Many Others Yesterday Up until the 1970s, pediatric heart surgery was still new. But in response to growing needs, Sainte-Justine started working with a team of specialists from Hôtel-Dieu who were called in as needed. The first procedure of this nature at Sainte-Justine was performed in October 1957, on a 9-year-old boy. The cardiac surgery unit as we now know it was set up in 1971.

Today The CHU Sainte-Justine cardiac surgery team has achieved some impressive firsts, not only in Quebec and Canada, but internationally as well. The team’s expertise has been lauded time and time again and is now being exported around the world.

Tomorrow,

with your ongoing support

Sainte-Justine will continue to acquire state-ofthe-art equipment to perform complex cardiac surgery, which is now an option for patients at an increasingly younger age. Your donations will also make it possible to train future surgeons from Quebec and elsewhere and to disseminate knowledge as far away as Ethiopia and South Africa.

Our Co-Chairs: Inspiring Leaders in

The CHU Sainte-Justine Research Centre

Philanthropy

Turns 40!

Like so many of you who are reading this report, we have had to deal with illness and its repercussions in our role as parents. In fact, it is in this capacity that we accepted to co-chair the 2012–2018 Healing More Better campaign and that we today reiterate our commitment as both volunteers and donors to the cause.

Established in 1974, the CHU Sainte-Justine Research Centre has played a crucial role in advancing mother and child care in Quebec, Canada and the rest of the world. As the country’s second largest pediatric research facility, the Centre owes its prestigious status to the unflagging trust of the philanthropic supporters who have believed in its far-reaching ambitions for four decades.

Giving back is so important. A world-class institution like Sainte-Justine has the power – providing we give it that power – to push the boundaries in maternal and pediatric health. The many specialized units Sainte-Justine is known for, chief among them cardiology, mental health, rare genetic disorders, oncology and perinatal care, are home to some of the world’s most prolific teams of clinicians and scientists. Being there to back their efforts, day after day, is incredibly inspiring for us.

until 2018. Every heartfelt contribution will get us one step closer to our goal. And by pooling these efforts – yours and ours – we can be more resolute in our commitment to build a better, brighter and healthier future for expectant mothers and children. For more than a century, Sainte-Justine has been a part of the family history of Quebecers. It’s part of ours too. As parents, we have made a promise to keep going no matter what. And with you by our sides, we are convinced that we can keep finding better ways to heal more children. Jacynthe Côté, Serge Godin and Pierre Boivin Co-Chairs of the Healing More Better campaign

As we all know, when you put your heart into something, it shows. Everything we do is motivated by this philosophy, and it will continue to guide us all the way through

Over the years, the Centre’s teams have made groundbreaking discoveries which had have a direct impact on how a significant number of diseases are seen, treated and even cured. Because it has become an international authority in each of these fields, it is attracting a growing number of established experts and up-and-coming talent, looking to fine-tune and share their knowledge – and, in so doing, change the lives of thousands of children and families here and

around the world. Dear donors, it is in no small part because of your involvement that we are seeing this phenomenal growth in high-level research. Through your countless efforts, you are helping to stoke the fires of motivation among our researchers and the community at large. This year, 45% of your donations went toward the Centre’s research activites. Over the past 15 years, this total exceeds the $120-million mark. Thank you for making knowledge one of the pillars on which we will build a healthier future for our mothers-to-be and children. And thank you for continuing to give to these efforts with the same energy and enthusiasm, day after day and year after year!

Justine Justine loves music – it makes her little heart go pitter-pat. Music is life, and reggae music, in particular, makes Justine happy.

uncertainty. Had she been deprived of oxygen while in the womb? Had her tiny brain suffered as a result? What effect, if any, would there be on her long-term development?

But her life certainly didn’t start out on a happy note. There was worry, when at 39 weeks’ gestation she had stopped moving in the womb. Panic, when the nurse ran out of the labour room. Alarm, when an emergency C-section was ordered. The term “fetal-maternal hemorrhage” was used to explain the situation to her parents – Justine’s blood cells were leaking into her mother’s bloodstream via the umbilical cord. Every second counted if they were to save her.

Today, 19-month-old Justine babbles, explores the world around her and dances. She has shown no sign of any lasting repercussions. And her name is a tribute to the NICU team, without whom there would be no reggae in parents Cristina and Stéphane’s life.

She was white as a sheet at delivery, and she wasn’t breathing. A team of 15 professionals welcomed her into the world. A series of massive transfusions followed. It was several days before her mother could hold Justine in her arms. Her two-week stay in the hospital was fraught with

For this happy family, Healing More Better means Justine’s bright smile early in the morning. Today and for all the days to come.

Justine’s grandparents have been giving back to the Foundation for more than 25 years. But for almost two years now, their contributions have resonated more deeply than ever before.

“We like to joke that she’ll turn out to be a reggae artist when she’s older.”

Your Impact on Justine… and So Many Others Yesterday Sainte-Justine opened its first obstetrics department, with 17 beds, in 1929. At the time, fewer than 6% of women gave birth in a hospital, a trend that would be turned on its head in the 1940s.

Today Sainte-Justine is Quebec’s leading authority on prenatal diagnosis, the only provider of fetal therapy in the province and the second largest fetal therapy centre in Canada. Roughly 3,800 babies a year are born at Sainte-Justine, and close to 60% of these involve high-risk pregnancies.

Tomorrow,

with your ongoing support

Our experts will continue to expand and deepen their understanding of fetal and newborn pathologies and their later impacts in childhood and adulthood. Thank you for standing side by side with them!

Young Leaders Circle Harnessing energy and talent to advance neonatal care

Our Team of Next Generation Philanthropists Always going the extra mile

In 2014, the Young Leaders Circle brought in over $1 million through five signature fundraisers, namely the Urban Duathlon in May, the Bake Sale in June, Lighting the Way in November, the Winter Triathlon in February and the Mont-Royal Ball in March. This indefatigable group of 150 or so young business professionals and entrepreneurs are committed to supporting the future Centre of Excellence in Neonatal Intensive Care, for which they have pledged to raise $ 8 million by 2018. Since 1999, the Young Leaders Circle has been forging a unique community in Montreal, which has thus far contributed over $6 million to Sainte-Justine. Propelled by deeply held values and an innovative spirit, the Young Leaders Circle is a caring, thoughtful and visionary group. Through their passion, generosity, optimistic outlook and pure gumption, they mobilize an entire community around their events. Thank you to each and every YLC member and the people who back their efforts.

At the halfway point of the Healing More Better campaign, our next generation philanthropists is still going strong! Members Chris Arsenault, Thane Calder, Charles Émond, Charles Guay, Pierre Larochelle, Annie Lemieux, Michel Nadeau, David Savard and Michelle Setlakwe, along with chairs France-Élaine Duranceau and François-Charles Sirois, are business professionals who believe in Sainte-Justine’s mission and who are committed to engaging their respective networks to ensure that the priority health-related needs of mothers-to-be and children are met more and more effectively. Ramping up their efforts, they were very proud this year to have reached their goal newly reset of $2 million. A huge success accomplished through their exceptional generosity. Our thanks to this dynamic and caring group for encouraging ongoing philanthropy throughout Quebec!

1km Youth Challenge of Private Schools for Sainte-Justine Once a philanthropist, always a philanthropist! With spokespeople as dynamic as pop sensation/teen heartthrob Olivier Dion and Florence Boucher, a former patient who survived a life-threatening accident, the 1km Youth Challenge of Private Schools for Sainte-Justine was sure to be an enormous success this year. More than 35,000 students in 44 schools queued up at the starting line to run or walk in support of the future Centre of Excellence in Trauma Care. The 2018 target: $5 million. The proceeds collected during the last school year came close to $800,000, bringing the total raised since the campaign was launched in 2012 to $2.5 million. This outpouring of “youth helping youth” is extremely touching. Together, the participants in this challenge are doing their part to build a healthier tomorrow for their generation and inspire others to action through their drive and determination. Our thanks go out to the organizing committees in each of the participating schools and, of course, the students who made the event come to life!

Opération Enfant Soleil Standing with the children and families of Sainte-Justine!

For nearly 30 years, Opération Enfant Soleil has been enriching the landscape of pediatric health by partnering with the top university hospital centres for children as well as regional organizations and facilities across the province. Opération Enfant Soleil’s generous $10-million commitment to the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation was confirmed last year. In 2014–2015, $3,067,225 of this total was received. These funds will be dedicated exclusively to setting up the future Opération Enfant Soleil ambulatory centre at the CHU Sainte-Justine. This is a bold, pioneering initiative that will have major repercussions for all families who use Sainte-Justine’s services. When it is inaugurated in 2018, the Centre will house all of the outpatient clinics and day centres under a single roof. This will help reduce hospital stays by a significant margin and make specialized and ultra-specialized care available both on site and remotely using telemedicine applications. Opération Enfant Soleil has been a valued partner of the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation since 1988 and has contributed more than $50 million to bringing numerous large-scale, cutting-edge initiatives to the fore and advancing pediatric and obstetric medicine at Sainte-Justine. On behalf of all those who are engaged in a health-related struggle today, and those who will be tomorrow, thank you!

Shorcan Brokers Limited 17th Annual Charity Day As a result of Shorcan Brokers’ 17th Annual Charity Day, the company generously donated $46,066 to the Neurology Department’s CIRENE (Integrated Centre for Child Neurodevelopment) project. The funds will be used to purchase a portable machine to facilitate diagnosis and innovative treatments for some 2,000 epileptic children who are seen at Sainte-Justine. Jean-François Sabourin of National Bank, whose son Jules has had epilepsy since birth, spearheaded this initiative. Our sincere and profound thanks go to him and to Shorcan Brokers Limited for their precious support this year. Here’s to many more years of working together for a great cause!

Offering hope for the future

On September 3, for the 27th year in a row, Piscines Tropicana Ltd. held its annual golf tournament at Club de Golf Montcalm in Saint-Liguori, in the Lanaudière region. Catering to more than 150 guests – among them clients, suppliers and employees, the event has blossomed into a cherished yearly tradition. Over time, more than $150,000 has been raised for the expectant mothers and children of Sainte-Justine, a cause that is near and dear to their hearts. This year, ticket sales and prize sponsorships meant that an impressive $11,250 was directed to the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation. Thank you to all those who took part and especially to tournament coordinator France Thibodeau for her enormous generosity and hard work, which went a long way in making the event a resounding success.

Tending to a sick child in the hospital during the holidays makes it difficult to do other things like Christmas shopping. In December, conscious of this predicament and of the importance of play in children’s healing process, Mattel-MEGA Brands stepped in to lend a helping hand to families. They set up a temporary stand at Sainte-Justine during the week of December 15, where they made more than 1,200 toys available, free of charge, to hospitalized children and their siblings. In addition to this very generous gesture, the company made an $80,000 donation to the Foundation and created a giant MEGA Bloks statue of Cachou, Sainte-Justine’s kangaroo mascot, which stands proudly in the hospital’s main foyer. A squad of employees volunteered to drop by and entertain young patients, along with Barbie and a Hot Wheels pilot, with crafts and tree-trimming activities, as well as a pyjama movie night. The overarching goal of these activities was to bring a little holiday cheer to the hospital setting for children and their families. Thank you to Mattel-MEGA Brands for being a source of joy and comfort to Sainte-Justine this holiday season.

More than 300 physicians at Sainte-Justine make vital contributions to academic funds to support fellowships in their respective specialties. The scope of their efforts makes it possible to support the best and brightest new talent from Quebec and around the world. In 2014–2015, a 26th and 27th fund were set up in ophthalmology and anesthesia. More than $12.8 million has been given to these academic funds from Sainte-Justine’s physicians since 1998. This exemplary show of solidarity stems from a collective desire to make a difference. To date, more than 400 fellow bursaries have been awarded as a result. Our heartfelt thanks go out to every one of these doctor-donors. They are an inspiration to us all!

Leucan, a long-time partner of the Foundation, has earmarked an outstanding $4 million over the next five years to drive clinical research forward.

Optimist Clubs Centre-du-Québec Region Family story time: A momentary escape from reality

Over the years, Claire Labrèche, Childhood cancer campaign district chair, has rallied together the Optimist Clubs in the Centre-du-Québec region to support the mothers-to-be and children of Sainte-Justine. This year, they contributed an additional $26,316 to the clubs’ collective $250,000 fundraising target to create a family lounge in the Sainte-Justine library. The lounge will be a place for young patients and their parents to relax, stay positive and have fun. As a result of Optimist Club members’ generosity and dedication, children will have a quiet space of their own to dream, play and read. We extend our warmest thanks to Ms. Labrèche and her fellow club members. Since 2010, you have raised more than $350,000 on our behalf. You are an inspiration to the entire philanthropic community and a model for others to follow.

Donations by Sainte-Justine’s employees Give back at work, give back through work Louis Malenfant has worked as a plumber for Sainte-Justine for 32 years. Not only is he dedicated to his job, he is dedicated to helping out children and families in need. The grandfather of four has been donating to the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation for the past 10 years. Whenever possible, he also takes part in various events organized to support patients and their families. Many of his co-workers do the same and value the cause as highly as they value their chosen occupation. Together, their commitment is even stronger. Thank you, everyone!

This will help the experts at Sainte-Justine to play an active role in accelerating the pace of discovery at the Leucan pediatric oncology and healthcare humanization research clinic at Sainte-Justine, as well as accommodate the numerous support services offered by Leucan to patients. In addition to running the Leucan playroom and giving parents access to a range of activities, Leucan employees provide a massage therapy service for children in the hospital. The organization also funds the Leucan Information Centre, which is mandated to meet the needs of parents and patients undergoing treatment. Leucan’s ongoing generosity means that more and more children and families living with cancer can enjoy a better quality of life in the midst of their ordeal and remain hopeful for a healthy, cancer-free future. On their behalf, thank you, Leucan!

“Taking a newly discovered gene and using it to develop an effective treatment – that’s my biggest dream!”

Imagining the Future:

Science His expressive gestures, his intent gaze and the enthusiasm in his voice as he shares the fascinating details of his work speak volumes about the passion that fuels Dr. Jacques L. Michaud. Chief of Sainte-Justine’s Department of Medical Genetics, Dr. Michaud is a physician and geneticist who is hard at work scrutinizing the more than 20,000 genes linked to 7,000 rare genetic disorders that affect 500,000 children in Canada. He has made it his mission to make sense of it all.

of his career, he can take a newly discovered gene and use it to develop a treatment that will change lives for the better. “It’s the ultimate challenge in genetics,” he says. “And it is happening more and more. As we move forward, progress will speed up, not only because we have the unique opportunity to have our patients close by, but also because the community is more aware than ever of the importance of funding research that advances patient care.”

“Early on in my medical career, I knew I wanted to do research so I could expand the existing body of knowledge. I wanted to be one of the people in the thick of it: writing papers, adding chapters and inventing new concepts.”

Knowing how vital donations have been to research since 2005, Dr. Michaud has been personally contributing to an academic fund aimed at making advances in genetics. The fund awards fellowships to up-and-coming researchers who are as enthralled as he is about this field of study.

He got what he wanted. Today, Dr. Michaud and his colleagues are at the forefront of a revolution in pediatric genetics. He intends to ride this wave so that, by the end

“Knowledge is expanding at an exponential rate,” he asserts. “We need to invest heavily in research, because that’s where the answers lie.”

Your Impact on Research Yesterday In the early 50s, Justine Lacoste-Beaubien, co-founder of Sainte-Justine, had already anticipated the tremendous benefit of carrying out high-level research in the vicinity of the Université de Montréal. More and more donors would eventually rally around her deeply held conviction of the importance of investing in knowledge.

Today The CHU Sainte-Justine Research Centre, the country’s second la rgest ped iat r ic resea rch faci l it y, enjoys an enviable reputation worldwide. In the past 15 years, you helped the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation provide over $120 million to enhance the pediatric research!

Tomorrow,

with your ongoing support

The new CHU Sainte-Justine Research Centre will open in 2016, with state-of-the-art facilities designed to accommodate an ever greater number of researchers to accelerate the pace of discovery and ensure advances are transferred to patients’ bedside in a timely manner.

Céline Dion and more than 2,000 guests were on hand at the Maison symphonique de Montréal on July 16 to celebrate the Chorale de l’Externat Mont-Jésus-Marie and Les Petits Chanteurs de Laval, the winners of the Sing for Sainte-Justine with Céline Dion contest. The spectacular evening marked the close of an equally spectacular campaign, which raised a whopping $827,000 through the involvement of 174 choirs and 5,000 singers, who lifted their voices in support of Sainte-Justine. Presented by SNC-Lavalin and the Ferreira Group, and hosted with panache by Gregory Charles, the event was a unique opportunity for these young singers to accompany their idol, Céline Dion. In addition to delivering a stirring performance, the songstress spoke from her heart and offered her best wishes to all the families of Sainte-Justine. It was an emotion-packed event that none of the participants will soon forget!

Good news for families of children and youth with an eating disorder: on January 28, Bell announced that it would pledge $500,000 toward the creation of Quebec’s first Integrated Mother-Child Centre for Eating Disorders. This tremendous gift, which was announced on Bell Let’s Talk Day, will allow Sainte-Justine’s teams to offer enhanced support to this vulnerable group, which is increasing in number year after year in Quebec. This donation will help bring a series of concrete initiatives to fruition, including the opening of a day hospital that will provide an intermediate level of care between full hospitalization and outpatient services. This novel approach will decrease the number and duration of hospital stays and improve the services available to families as their child reintegrates to normal living. We are indebted to Bell for being such a faithful partner in promoting pediatric mental health!

This proud contribution to the new Centre for Rare Genetic Disorders, the only facility of its kind in Quebec, will allow the experts at Sainte-Justine to come together to improve health outcomes through faster and earlier diagnosis and the development of effective treatments based on future discoveries. The CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation is deeply grateful for this amazing level of support. Thank you, Rio Tinto Alcan, for helping us find better ways to heal more children in Quebec.

As the Chief Executive Officer of Intact Financial Corporation and an active member of the Healing More Better campaign cabinet, Charles Brindamour once again showed the importance of utilizing leadership to advance social responsibility. In October, his firm announced an impressive $650,000 gift to the campaign, $500,000 of which was earmarked specifically for Sainte-Justine’s Espace Transition project, a place where young patients can engage in various means of artistic expression, as they transition back to normal life following mental health treatment. The remaining $150,000 will go toward the Young Leaders Circle’s signature events in support of the Centre of Excellence in Neonatal Intensive Care. Thank you to Charles Brindamour and Intact Financial Corporation for being hands-on partners in promoting the health of expectant mothers and children.

Direct Mail Campaigns

A fundraising dinner with Italian flair

Thank you for responding in droves to our appeals

Anna Baggio is a woman with a big heart. Two of her children were born at Sainte-Justine. For 16 years, she has been paying it forward by inviting Montreal’s Italian community to break bread together and show their support for children in need. She prepares a five-course meal for more than 100 guests and serves it up in the basement of the Church of the Madonna della Difesa in Little Italy. A number of volunteers roll up their sleeves and chip in, which is key to the ongoing success of the annual event, held every May. This year, $10,000 was raised, half of which was directed to Sainte-Justine. Anna’s hard work over the past 16 years has led to research-oriented donations totalling more than $60,000. Our thanks go out to this exceptional woman and her circle of family and friends, who hope to continue the tradition as long as possible!

Thousands of people across the province, young and old, reacted enthusiastically to our direct mailings during the year, via mail and email. Together, you donated a total of over $2.6 million, and thousands of you signed up for our monthly donor program. Thank you for ensuring we have a steady source of loyal funding to support our mothers-to-be and our children.

“I give to Sainte-Justine so that every young person has the chance to be a kid before they have to grow up.”

Imagining the Future:

One Gift at a Time She calls them “her kids” and she is fiercely passionate about them. A decade into her retirement, former high school teacher Yolande Amyot has a clear memory of the students she taught over her 35-year career. Nothing touches her heart more than bumping into them and finding out they are happy and doing well. “You have to make the most out of life and live it large while you can,” she says. “There’s plenty of time to dial things back later on.” Not everyone has this chance. And even though she doesn’t have first-hand experience with childhood illness, she is keenly aware of the repercussions it can have and has had on the people around her. She remembers a brilliant student who dreamed of a career in medicine but whose ambitions were cut short, to his great dismay, when he was diagnosed with leukemia.

For Yolande, giving to Sainte-Justine is a way of helping children achieve their dreams and enjoy their youth to the fullest – carefree and even foolish. She finds it terribly unfair that some never have this experience. The boundless admiration and confidence Yolande has when it comes to our kids was her primary motivation for including the Foundation in her will. It is a decision that reflects the same values that guided her throughout her teaching career. “A child who gets a good start in life will make a meaningful contribution to the society of tomorrow. That’s why I became a teacher. That’s also why I continue to believe in our youth and do what I can to support them.”

The Impact of Your Generosity Yesterday Sainte-Justine was founded on November 30, 1907, with $287.11 in the bank, the result of a fundraising event and a donation from the city of Montreal.

Today T he Fou ndat ion as we now k now it was established in 1987. In the years since, more than $450 million has been raised by nearly 400,000 of donors across Quebec and around the world.

Tomorrow,

with your ongoing support

From 2012 to 2018, our goal is to raise more than $150 million toward our Healing More Better campaign. Since the days of Justine Lacoste-Beaubien, philanthropy is a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation, rallying an ever-growing number of people to our cause. Supporting Sainte-Justine is something that has touched each and every one of our hearts and the hearts of our children. Thank you, one and all, for contributing to this amazing momentum!

Commitments for the Future: A legacy of generosity

Good times and a good cause

Madeleine Lachapelle, who passed away at age 89 last year, wanted to give a gift that would live on and help Sainte-Justine continue to make strides forward in patient care and research. Having herself won a hard-fought battle against cancer at age 47, she could not bear to think of a child being put through such an ordeal. She was the kind of woman who looked after everyone and everything around her – her sick brother, her garden, her friends. And she wanted to go one step further with her bequest and look after generations of children by helping the researchers at Sainte-Justine make bone marrow diseases a thing of the past. We are very grateful to her and to all those who honoured us by remembering Sainte-Justine in their will this year. May their contributions bring a ray of hope into the young lives they touch.

On May 26, Club Laval-sur-le-Lac hosted the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation’s 27th annual Cachou Invitational Golf Tournament. The more than 200 golfers from the business community in attendance raised $1,015,000 in net proceeds for the mothers-to-be and children of Sainte-Justine. Since its founding in 1987, the event has brought in over $10 million. A huge thank you goes out to the honorary president, Michael Ross of Dollarama, the chair of the organizing committee, France-Élaine Duranceau, and all the other committee members and participants who make the tournament a success every year.

Molson Foundation

High fashion meets culinary flair, all in support of the mothers-to-be and children of Sainte-Justine

Innovation, research and technology to “heal more better”!

The fifth annual Ogilvy en fête extravaganza on November 19 saw some 2,500 guests gather for an evening of glitz and glamour at La Maison OGILVY. Considered by many to be the official kick-off of the hectic holiday shopping season, the event brought in close to $250,000 in net proceeds for the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation and was a huge hit by any account. This year’s honorary co-chairs were Isabelle Hudon, Penny Mancuso and Andrew Torriani. Attendees were given a 15% discount on practically all in-store merchandise and were treated to gourmet delicacies on every floor from some of Montreal’s top culinary hot spots. Marina Orsini hosted a runway show, featuring a number of celebrities and children. Our partners and participants deserve a hearty thank you for their caring and support!

In an effort to help the children and adolescents in Quebec who are diagnosed with complex pathologies, the Molson Foundation has made an exceptional $2-million donation toward the future Centre of Excellence in Imaging and New Surgical Technologies. This world-class facility will be poised to develop avant-garde solutions to treat musculoskeletal disorders, advance orthopedic, neurological and cardiovascular research, train young professionals and utilize the latest research findings to improve patient outcomes. Thank you to the Molson Foundation for letting our kids benefit from the latest technological advances!

L'Italien Family

A lifetime of support from Carroll and Claire L’Italien Making tomorrow’s possibilities today’s realities Planning a bequest is an act of faith in the future. More and more people are taking this route to show their loyalty toward Sainte-Justine – people like Claire and Carroll L’Italien, whose compassion toward our mothersto-be and children has been expressed in countless ways over the years. They are the parents of Dr. Catherine Litalien, a pediatric intensivist at Sainte-Justine, and proud grandparents of six grandchildren who, they are happy to report, are the very picture of health. They felt compelled to do their part early on. The community-minded couple has spent more than 22 years fuelling hope, including several years on the Foundation’s board and Growing Up Healthy campaign cabinet for Carroll L’Italien. Thank you to both of them, and others like them, for including Sainte-Justine in their estate plans this year. Your commitment to the future of our children moves and humbles us. Pulling Together to

Push Forward: Thank You! 2014 Sainte-Justine Christmas Tree Campaign

Cirque du Soleil Celebrating Cirque du Soleil’s 30th anniversary in style

Together for a brighter holiday What a majestic tree you illuminated on December 11, with a record 93,000 lights twinkling on its branches! Thousands of you from all over the province pitched in for this seventh annual campaign, in conjunction with Rythme FM, our loyal campaign partner from the get-go, and Metro grocery stores in Quebec, whose 207 locations got involved for the first time this year. The $465,000 raised will go to Sainte-Justine’s social services and priority initiatives. Metro’s customers throughout Quebec were particularly generous, contributing an impressive 36,000 lights through their checkout donations. Thank you for making our tree shine brighter than ever and adding a sparkle to the eye of hundreds of hospitalized children, as well as a pinch of “comfort and joy” for families dealing with sickness over the holidays.

Fraternité Nationale des Charpentiers-Menuisiers A holiday tradition in support of expectant mothers and children

More than 1,500 people gathered at the breathtaking Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church in Montreal on December 12 for the premiere of a series of shows honouring Cirque du Soleil on its 30th anniversary. The event was not only magical, it was also generous as all the proceeds from the ticket sales – nearly $200,000 – were donated to the Healing More Better campaign. Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberté also took advantage of this one-of-a-kind opportunity to announce a personal donation of $1 million, over and above the initial amount. This major commitment will be used to create an autism research chair and fund a program to monitor survivors of childhood cancer on a long-term basis. The announcement was greeted by a standing ovation. These initiatives promise to make the dreams of a healthier tomorrow come true for thousands of children and families – the kind of magic that Guy Laliberté and Cirque du Soleil have been bringing into people’s lives for three decades. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts!

“At Metro, we were delighted to partner with the Sainte-Justine Christmas Tree Campaign for the very first time this year. Thanks to the generosity of customers from all across Quebec, we were proud to help make the holidays brighter for hundreds of families with a sick child.” Marie-Claude Bacon Senior Director, Corporate Affairs Department Metro Inc.

Cirque du Soleil

On December 14, the Fraternité Nationale des CharpentiersMenuisiers invited its members, along with their spouses and children, to their 16th annual holiday party. The traditional family get-together for this small community of only a few hundred people has raised an impressive $130,000 for obstetric and pediatric care at Sainte-Justine since 1999. Thank you on behalf of the entire Sainte-Justine family. Because of each and every one of our ambassadors at the Fraternité, we can continue to improve our services and build a better, brighter and healthier future for everyone.

Sandra and Alain Bouchard Foundation

Sandra and Alain Bouchard Foundation $3 million to support research into intellectual disabilities in Quebec

On April 1, Alain Bouchard and his wife, Sandra Chartrand, announced that their family foundation was making an extraordinary $3-million donation toward the creation of the Jonathan Bouchard Intellectual Disability Research Chair – a first in Canada. Inspired by their son Jonathan, who has an intellectual disability, the couple aims to give hope to 160,000 children and adults who are affected by these conditions and help them achieve their full potential. Chairholder designate Dr. Jacques L. Michaud’s work will make it possible to identify and gain a better understanding of many of the genes involved in the diagnosis of intellectual disability. We are so very grateful to the Sandra and Alain Bouchard Foundation for offering this tremendous gift of hope through research. And a very special thank you goes out to Jonathan Bouchard for being a wonderful ambassador for families living with an intellectual disability.

Comforting families, one hug at a time In February, thousands of Quebecers showed their support for families in need during Sainte-Justine’s ninth annual Month of Hugs. Thanks to the enthusiasm of customers of 335 Jean Coutu stores across the province and the extraordinary commitment of Rythme FM, Jean Coutu and Clarins, $370,000 was donated to the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation, as 25,000 tubes of “Rose Câlins” Lip Perfector sold out in a record 14 days. For every unit sold at the retail price of $20, Jean Coutu and Clarins earmarked $10 for the Foundation. This province-wide initiative will support CHU Sainte-Justine’s Integrated Centre for Child Neurodevelopment (CIRENE), the first facility of its kind in North America. Thank you all for having embraced this cause with such ardour.

Renewed Confidence,

Compelling Results

During the year, the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation became the first healthcare organization in Quebec to receive official accreditation from the Imagine Canada Standards Program, the aim of which is to promote best practices, strong governance, financial accountability and transparency in Canadian charities.

It is with great pride and gratitude to the entire community that we reported $35.5 million in income at the end of fiscal 2014–2015. Our efforts to reach out to a broadened group of major gift donors has resulted in increased generosity and financial commitments. Together with the extraordinary performance of our annual campaigns, our direct mailing initiatives, the activities spearheaded by the Young Leaders Circle and the fundraisers held because of you, we are swiftly closing in on our target of $150 million by 2018. More than $2.7 million of the monies received during the year came from bequests, and over $1.5 million in academic funds. The returns on these funds were reserved for future needs. These funds will help support excellence in healthcare, research and teaching for many years to come. As a result of strict cost control measures and investment returns that were double our projections, we generated a surplus of $29 million. Our cost of fundraising remains among the lowest of major Canadian foundations. Moreover, in keeping with our overriding desire to promote the advancement of knowledge, the Foundation contributed $ 6 million to the CHU Sainte-Justine Research Centre’s scientific work in 2014–2015. Another $6.6 million was earmarked for the hospital’s top priorities, bringing the total amount distributed to Sainte-Justine this year to $25 million. And $5 million was earmarked to ensure that promising multidisciplinary projects will be able to move forward in the future. Thank you!

Thank you for the trust you continue to place in us, year after year. Your ongoing support motivates us to do even more for the health of our mothers-to-be and children.

“It was 1981 and I was two years old. They diagnosed me with hemolytic uremic syndrome, a rare and often fatal disease. But the team at Sainte-Justine, led by Dr. Jacques Lacroix, managed to work a miracle. Today, 33 years later, I’m the picture of health and I couldn’t be more grateful. My family and I are proud to be active supporters of the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation.” Dominique Seigneur Director, Communication and Development Daughter of François-Xavier Seigneur, a member of the Healing More Better campaign cabinet
