Robert sears - Kurling for Kids -

Committing to saving more lives Jessica was two years old when she was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Robert describes what it was life, trying to figure out whether or not to authorize the treatments that could save her life, or rip it away. He says it’s the toughest decision they ever had to make as parents. “Sainte-Justine saved our daughter,” he insists. “If you’ve never had a sick child, you may not understand. The day we checked out of the hospital was the happiest day of our lives. I wanted to say thank you to Sainte-Justine any way I could – but I wanted it to be a great big THANK YOU. On our way out, someone was selling raffle tickets at the front door. I bought $100 worth. I felt it was the least I could do.”

“After the storm passes, when things calm down again, you look at your family and it dawns on you just how lucky you’ve been,” he says. “You realize it’s a miracle and a simple ‘thank you’ isn’t enough. So you decide to get involved and do more. You decide to help Sainte-Justine get what it needs to make more miracles happen.” Kurling for Kids is Robert’s way of giving back. “Our miracle is what spurred us into action.” What was initially supposed to be a one-off benefit tournament gradually turned into an ongoing mission to serve sick children. The first year, the event brought in $7,000. The second, $10,000. By last year, it had snowballed to a whopping $250,000! Over a span of 13 years, Kurling for Kids has raised over $1 million. “And I promise you it won’t take another 13 years to hit the $2million mark,” he beams.

NOW JESSICA AND ALEX ARE STEPPING UP AND DOING THEIR PART.

“It’s like all that happened to someone else. I’m doing this for my father, who’s totally committed to the cause. I see everything he does,” says Jessica, today a poised 19-year-old. “He spends all day at his job and then comes home and starts all over again with K4K, working away at that until midnight. He never stops. It’s really touching. I see how many people he’s helping.”

Her younger sister, Alex, is 16. “Sainte-Justine saved my sister’s life,” she smiles. “What would have happened to our family if things hadn’t worked out? Other parents and children have had to live through that. We have been given the gift of life. Now it’s up to us to give back.” Robert confirms that having a sick child is the worst thing in the world. He would have done anything to take his baby daughter’s place on

the operating table. “The only thing I can do is raise money for others who are faced with the same ordeal. I can’t wait to retire so I can devote myself full-time to my charity work. And I hope my daughters will take over the reins after me.” Changing the world, one “sweeping” gesture at a time… Robert, Jessica and Alex are all living proof of how effective this philosophy can be.

Catherine kozminski & olivier adenot - Fonds Maëlle Adenot -

Finding meaning when hope seems lost Maëlle is a little girl in harmony with nature. When she reaches out her hand, butterflies flit over to her and land on her fingertips. But Maëlle has had more than her share of bad luck in life. She is autistic and also had trouble learning how to walk. Her parents, Catherine and Olivier, worked hard – very hard – to stimulate her development, so that any differences that remained were positive ones. After years of effort, Catherine and Olivier noticed that she was showing symptoms of facial paralysis; they were worsening daily. She was seven at the time. Her eyelids dropped. Her face froze. She could barely speak or even swallow. Without any natural reflexes to protect her, she was at high risk for choking. The diagnosis hit them like a ton of bricks: myasthenia gravis, a neuromuscular autoimmune disease. An extremely rare condition in children, for which there is no cure. Thus began a seemingly endless stream of heavy medication and plasmapheresis treatments (the mechanical replacement of blood plasma). After 18 months and 150 treatment sessions, the results were devastating. Maëlle’s condition kept deteriorating. The situation was dire. “We’re going to lose her… we’re going to lose her,” Catherine remembers

DAD, MOM, YOU ARE THE PARENTS I ALWAYS WANTED. I LOVE YOU.

thinking. “We even started the process of… I don’t understand… we’re doing what we can but…” Catherine breaks down in tears. The memories of a year ago remain painful. Bed-ridden for 20 hours a day, Maëlle was clearly losing her struggle. She came very close to dying five times. One morning, she told her parents: “Dad, Mom, you are the parents I always wanted. I love you.” At eight years old, Maëlle started falling into depression. The child psychiatrist told them that, without something to boost her morale, she might not make it. Terrified at the thought of losing her daughter, Catherine tapped into her inner warrior and the unstoppable power of a mother’s love. She revived Maëlle’s fighting spirit. “We love you too, Maëlle, but you can’t let this disease get the better of you.” One of the doctors at Sainte-Justine proposed a last-ditch effort at stabilizing Maëlle’s condition. But if it failed, they would be in serious danger of losing her forever. The procedure involved highly targeted chemotherapy, the kind normally reserved for lymphoma (cancer of the lymphatic system). After her first treatment in May 2011, Maëlle was rushed back to the hospital. Once again, they feared the worst.

The Fonds Maëlle Adenot Maëlle may have come into this world enshrouded in a small, prickly cocoon, but today all she has to do is reach out her hand, and butterflies come to greet her. Hers is a special gift, a gift intertwined in a butterfly’s magical dance of freedom.

“It’s strange but having a sick child has made everything more vivid for us. It has pushed us to be more invested in the things we do. We can’t just be passive participants – we want to play a front-line role. There’s so much to do. So we just keep doing it.”

Maëlle wears her uniqueness like a tiara: Her Serene Highness, Princess of Hope.

The Fonds Maëlle Adenot was established in 2010 and has since raised over $81,000 for the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation.

The best works of art are priceless. Their true value is measured in how deeply they touch your soul. Catherine and Olivier know precisely how much their own little masterpiece is worth to them: everything.

That is when Catherine decided to find her own way to get involved, in an attempt to “find meaning when hope seemed lost.”

“Sainte-Justine is a tremendous source of pride for our family. They saved Maëlle. We owe them her life,” she points out. “What can we do to give back? Stress can wreak havoc on you. But it’s still a source of energy… so why not put it to good use?”

- Fonds Maëlle Adenot -

About this time, the first Défi Jeunesse 1km event came about, bringing together several private schools in Montreal. Maëlle’s siblings – Maude, then seven, and Mathieu, six – ran with their father to “feel the life all around them.” Everybody pitched in. Katia Surprenant, the head of École Les Trois Saisons, rallied her entire school behind their embattled classmate. Family members, students, teachers, parents and others all ran for the same reason: Maëlle. Not too long after that, the news came in: her second treatment had worked!

Tapping into the power of community

“Sainte-Justine is all about family. A big, strong and united family. From generation to generation, we all pull together for our children.” Paul Desmarais Jr. Chairman and Co-Chief Executive Officer, Power Corporation of Canada, and Honorary President of the Healing More Better campaign team

We are equally as proud to be working alongside our new board chair, the Hon. Michael M. Fortier, whose stature, leadership and generosity are a source of inspiration for us all. Everyone at the Foundation hopes that this challenge is as rewarding for him as his presence is for us. This year, dear donors, your extraordinary gifts have allowed us to contribute a record $13 million to research, specifically to setting up new neuroscience laboratory facilities, creating scholarships for top researchers from around the world

One of the main reasons I agreed to chair the Foundation’s Board of Directors in June 2012 was the level of dedication and commitment its members show toward Sainte-Justine. I also have a close personal connection with the hospital: four of my children were born there and one underwent major surgery there. I consider myself to be very lucky to live in a community with a healthcare facility of this calibre. The launch of the new Healing More Better campaign in December was undoubtedly one of the highlights of 2012–2013 and a turning point for the Foundation. Céline Dion and René Angélil’s renewed commitment as our lifetime patrons and the creation of a strong campaign team boasting some of the most influential members of the Quebec business community speak volumes about how much Sainte-Justine means to us all. Their outstanding commitment – and yours – will

We recently embarked on the largest modernization and expansion project in Sainte-Justine’s history. This eminently forward-looking initiative is prompting us to rethink and redefine the processes and practices at CHU Sainte-Justine, so we can continue to improve the health of mothers and children across Quebec.

and allocating startup funds to some of the best and brightest minds around. Although the Healing More Better campaign is still in its early stages, your contributions are already making a difference, not only by stepping up the pace of discovery but also by giving us the means to ensure patients benefit from the latest advances as quickly as possible and to invest in new approaches to healthcare.

The support of the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation and the faith that its Board of Directors and teams have shown in our project will help us build a bigger and better Sainte-Justine. This is the goal we will be working to achieve in the years to come as the Growing Up Healthy project forges ahead.

No matter where you are, you are helping to redefine the face of philanthropy in Quebec. No matter who you are, you are proof that the generosity of the human spirit is a boost to life. Thank you for being there for us – today and tomorrow.

IMPROVING THE HEALTH OF CHILDREN AND MOTHERS IN QUEBEC CHU Sainte-Justine is well on its way to becoming a world leader in mother and child health, thanks to the efforts of its research, teaching, clinical, professional and administrative staff, as well as the invaluable and unflagging support of the Foundation and its donors.

Could Justine Lacoste-Beaubien ever have imagined that multiple generations of dedicated, talented and community-minded men and women would follow her vision and carry on her dream of developing better ways of healing more children? Your commitment has taken root and continues to grow bigger and stronger year after year: from little acorns to mighty oaks.

From all across the province, you renewed your support once again this year – entrusting us with more than $30 million. Words cannot express how gratified we are by the outstanding relationship we enjoy with our cherished donors.

Once completed, the new Specialized Units Building will house a range highly specialized services such as pediatric and neonatal intensive and intermediate care units, trauma surgery facilities, a new set of operating rooms, a high-risk

pregnancy unit and birthing centre, a surgical suite as well as medical imaging services. As for our new research centre, we will be seeing a significant increase in our research staff and the opening of new laboratories, which will contribute to stepping up the pace of discovery and, in turn, fostering better health outcomes for more children. This year’s ground-breaking marked the first step in realizing our dream of providing an optimal healthcare environment for children, their families and our teams. For 25 years, the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation’s commitment has been instrumental in the growth and development of our mother-child university hospital centre. Beyond the financial resources it offers, the Foundation plays a fundamental role in shaping our vision and delivering on this pledge. We owe the Foundation, and the donors who support it, a huge debt of gratitude for the trust they have placed in us and the generosity they have shown – both of which we will cherish greatly as we pursue our endeavours now and in the future.

be vital to meeting our ambitious goals between now and 2018. I would like to acknowledge the leadership of Dr. Fabrice Brunet, Chief Executive Officer of CHU Sainte-Justine. He and everyone who works at the hospital deserve our gratitude and admiration. Not only do they provide quality care to all the children (and mothers) who cross their threshold, they do it with remarkable compassion and humanity. But most of all, I salute all the mothers and children who are cared for at Sainte-Justine. Know that your courage and your determination are a constant source of inspiration that propels us forward and encourages us to excel, so that our doctors, our researchers and our nurses can be among the very best and continue to develop better ways to heal more children. Investing in research is essential to help science succeed where nature may have failed and, in so doing, give the gift of health to those who need it. Recognizing the importance of cultivating highlevel scientific expertise, the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation designated this as a pillar of its donation allocation strategy early in its history. Bearing this in mind, the Foundation has invested in a number of leading-edge technologies, including magnetic resonance imaging. By supporting the acquisition of a 3 Tesla MRI scanner, internationally renowned for the crystal-clear images it produces, the Foundation has made it possible to pinpoint medical anomalies that once escaped detection. This technology has enabled doctors to make more accurate diagnoses and given researchers

And a community of donors that inspires everyone at Sainte-Justine to excel

Funds from the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation are used to support research, healthcare, specialized equipment, teaching and health promotion.

“Why give?  When our son Alexandre needed you, you were there. It was natural for us to thank you by giving to the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation. Now that Alexandre is grown and is doing well, we still give to the Foundation. Why? So you can be there when Alexandre has his own children and when all the other Alexandres out there need you. Why…? Simply because we love our children – and because you love our children.”  Marielle Dion and Pierre-André Jodoin

access to more homogeneous patient cohorts, which in turn has meant increased reliability and precision in terms of study results. But no matter how powerful the technology, it alone is not enough to turn study findings into effective diagnostic, predictive, preventive and treatment solutions. That takes scientific insight. The Foundation firmly believes in the value of investing in ingenuity, which is why it has set up a fellowship program for graduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral students, thereby helping to shape the next generation of researchers. Today, hundreds of former research fellows are making their mark on the world. Many of them have decided to pursue their career at CHU Sainte-Justine, alongside other notable professionals. Together, they form teams that represent

the crème de la crème of the Canadian clinical pediatric research community. Whether these fellowship recipients and other prominent researchers choose to stay here to pursue their career is contingent on a few factors, not the least of which is the financial support set aside to recruit forward-looking researchers through startup funding. Backed by a concrete vision of mother-child research and a strategy that blends state-of-the-art technology with human capital, the Foundation has spent the last quarter of a century making Quebec a place where the children of yesterday, today and tomorrow can look forward to a better, brighter and healthier future.

Pierre Boivin: Leading Today for a Better Tomorrow

the CHU sainte-justine foundation our mission To engage the community and support CHU Sainte-Justine in its pursuit of excellence and its commitment to providing the children and mothers of today and tomorrow with one of the highest levels of healthcare in the world.

our values + Love for children + family

Richard Pham and Pierre Boivin in June 2012. Pierre is the reason young Richard is alive and well today. They first met in 2004, when Richard was on the waiting list for a heart transplant. Touched by his story, Pierre contacted several influential business professionals and, in just a few days, had raised enough money for CHU Sainte-Justine to acquire a mechanical heart device (Berlin heart), to keep Richard alive until a donor match was found. Eight years later, Richard thanked his guardian angel at a tribute in his honour.

+ generosity + excellence + leadership + ethics

our code of ethics The activities of the Foundation are carried out with a great respect for confidentiality and for your motivations as well as with a constant care to meet the needs and priorities of CHU Sainte-Justine. At the Foundation, we are always careful to protect the interests of each one of our donors while maintaining transparency. Each and every day, year after year, we are constantly working to keep the trust that you have confided in us so that you will remain with us for a long time to come.

Social responsibility is among the core of values people today admire most about their leaders. Everywhere, men and women – and, increasingly, younger men and women – are choosing to step up and get involved in causes they care about. Philanthropy is gaining ground. High atop the list of those who are making the biggest strides is Pierre Boivin. He has been on the board of the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation for 12 years, serving six years (June 2006–June 2012) as its chair. Pierre is a man of vision – a driven, determined leader with ambitious plans who has set the bar extraordinarily high. “As long as we can do more, we must do more.” This is Pierre’s leitmotif and one that speaks to his unequivocal commitment. With strength, courage and perseverance, Pierre has rallied an entire community behind the promise of finding better ways to heal more children. And it is in the spirit of this promise that he has taken on another challenge for SainteJustine: co-chairing the new five-year Healing More Better campaign, the goal of which is to ensure that mothers and children in Quebec have faster access to the latest scientific and medical breakthroughs.

Making optimal use of his extensive network and expertise to propel fundraising efforts, Pierre has forged lasting ties between CHU Sainte-Justine and the public. He has inspired legions of volunteers and donors to take up the cause. And he has made the Foundation a standard-bearer for philanthropic organizations. He has been presented with numerous awards in recognition of his outstanding service to the community. In 2012, he was named Volunteer of the Year by the Association of Fundraising Professionals and received the Prix Émerillon from the CHU Sainte-Justine Research Centre, an award created in his honour. Pierre is a pioneer, a trailblazer and a unifying force. Under his leadership, the Foundation has, more than ever before, paved the way for groundbreaking advances in mother-child care. In fact, he has done his job so well that he has made ours an even more daunting one. His infectious energy and consummate professionalism are a source of inspiration for us all to do more – because we can and because we must. Thank you, Pierre!

Kickoff of the 2013–2018 Healing More Better campaign On December 12, Céline Dion and René Angélil, the honorary lifetime patrons of CHU Sainte-Justine, kicked off Healing More Better, the largest fundraising campaign in the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation’s history. The goal of the campaign is to raise $150 million by 2018 in order to heal more children in Quebec and to keep doing it better. Featuring stirring visuals that captured the very essence of the campaign, thanks to the talented experts at Moment Factory, the event was a true celebration of life and hope. Donors, patients, families, clinicians, researchers, teachers, reporters and more – over a hundred people in all – gathered at Sainte-Justine’s Cinéma Céline Dion to show their support for the initiative.

It was also an ideal opportunity to introduce the public to the members of the campaign cabinet, led by co-chairs Pierre Boivin, President and Chief Executive Officer of Claridge Inc., Jacynthe Côté, Chief Executive of Rio Tinto Alcan, and Serge Godin, Founder and Executive Chairman of the Board of CGI Group, Inc.

To all our supporters from across the province, we thank you for embarking on this amazing adventure with us and for joining our quest to provide our children with one of the best levels of healthcare in the world.

DREAMING BIG Every year, a number of prestigious organizations and foundations join forces with Sainte-Justine to reach out and change the lives of mothers-to-be and children. They are the big brothers and big sisters we can turn to, the shoulder we can lean on. Their compassion, commitment and conviction are the threads with which we will weave a healthier tomorrow, today. With their support, we can dare to dream – and dream big.

Fondation des Gouverneurs de l’espoir Providing caring support during life’s most difficult moments Since 2007, the Fondation des Gouverneurs de l’Espoir has donated the very impressive sum of $2,344,650 to the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation and thus contributed to bringing some very important projects to the forefront. This year, for instance, it is finalizing its commitment to the Centre of Excellence in Pediatric Palliative Care and Long-Term Treatment of Critical Illnesses. This facility is home to numerous pediatric palliative and oncology initiatives designed to benefit patients and their families. This year’s donations made it possible to set up two new rooms in the mother-child department to accommodate mothers-to-be experiencing complications during pregnancy. To date, their gifts have been the driving force behind five of the six palliative care rooms currently available at SainteJustine. These rooms provide families with a private, comforting and peaceful setting to help them cope during some of their darkest moments.

ALDO GROUP

Leucan

OPÉRATION ENFANT SOLEIL

An invaluable investment for the future The ALDO Group has committed to investing $175,000 over a five-year period in the CHU Sainte-Justine Educational Services’ scholarship matching program. This program provides financial support to various departments and units throughout the hospital so that physicians can fine-tune their expertise abroad. It also facilitates the integration of doctors from other countries into Sainte-Justine’s continuing education programs so they can hone their area of specialization. This sizable support will cover the cost of a senior clinical fellow who will be able to broaden and share knowledge and further medical advances in pediatric and maternal health care. As such, the ALDO Group is playing a key role in helping us make CHU SainteJustine a state-of-the-art mother-and-child facility and train the top specialists of tomorrow.

Clinical research: A true gift of hope For children living with cancer and their families, Leucan’s contribution to clinical cancer research represents a concrete source of hope and faith that a cure will eventually be found. Once again this year, our longtime partner has reconfirmed its steadfast commitment and donated $529,650 to the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation. These funds will be used to back clinical research in hematology/oncology at CHU Sainte-Justine and the Leucan Information Centre at the Centre de cancérologie Charles-Bruneau. They will notably provide financial support for several research consortiums, including NANT (New Approaches to Neuroblastoma Therapy) and its studies on neuroblastoma relapse, as well as the 2012 Boston protocol and the Canadian pediatric brain tumor consortium. Knowing that top medical and research teams are working hard to find a cure for their children goes a long way in rekindling the hope of hundreds of parents.

25 years of sunshine for children in need For 25 years now, Opération Enfant Soleil has been helping to improve the health outcomes and quality of life of children across Quebec. As one of our most cherished allies in the fight to offer the very best care, Opération Enfant Soleil has once again been most generous in its support for the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation’s efforts.

“I’m a mother who has had the immense good fortune of seeing her son beat cancer. My commitment to Sainte-Justine is, to an extent, a pact I have with life.”

“Reaching out to future generations has always been one of the ALDO Group’s top priorities in terms of giving back to the community. Our support for SainteJustine speaks to our deep-seated desire to continue to do everything in our power to improve children’s lives. We are proud to do our part to build a better future for everyone.”

CSL Behring Canada

FOUNDATION OF STARS

Shaping the best minds of tomorrow We were absolutely delighted when CSL Behring Canada announced its three-year contribution (2013–2016) to CHU Sainte-Justine. As a result, Sainte-Justine has been able to recruit top clinical fellows in pediatric thrombosis and hemostasis, under the tutelage of Dr. Rochelle Winikoff. Not only will this commitment enable the continuous training of high-calibre professionals, it will also ensure that young patients have faster access to leading-edge specialized care, which is ultimately Sainte-Justine’s number-one priority. None of this would be possible without corporate support, and that is precisely what Behring Canada is giving to CHU Sainte-Justine by helping us shape the best minds of tomorrow and thus strengthen the impact of Sainte-Justine here in Canada and around the world.

Guiding stars for 35 years This year marks the Foundation of Stars’ 35th anniversary! Although 35 years is a mere blip in the life of a star, the Foundation has accomplished a great deal in this time. Among the pediatric research initiatives it has supported, the ones led by the CHU Sainte-Justine Research Centre have received nearly $29 million in funding. This year, more than $603,400 went toward transferring research findings to patients’ bedsides even more quickly and efficiently. Scholarships offered to our researchers constitute an important part of its loyal support. The Foundation of Stars is one of the leading sources of non-governmental funding for pediatric research in Quebec.

COLE FOUNDATION Helping families grappling with pediatric cancer Every single day, parents of children living with cancer have to deal with the harsh realities of this disease. Many of them are forced to quit their jobs and stay at home to care for their children. They are isolated, exhausted and often plagued with financial worries in addition to a myriad of medical concerns. That is why, since 2006, the Cole Foundation has been supporting CHU Sainte-Justine’s social services team to lend a hand to families grappling with pediatric cancer. Thanks to approximately $300,000 directed to the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation over the past six years, the team can reach out to these families so they can focus their energies on long-term care and convalescence.

This year, these funds made it possible to equip the Opération Enfant Soleil hybrid cardiac operating room with an imaging system for the echocardiography and electrocardiography laboratory. This integrated information system will give healthcare providers prompt, simultaneous access to cardiac imaging and electrophysiology data. Since 1989, Opération Enfant Soleil has contributed significantly to a number of forward-looking initiatives to advance pediatric medicine at Sainte-Justine. In addition to the state-of-the-art picture archiving and communication system (PACS), this long-term partnership has helped make several priority and high-profile initiatives a reality: + Development and subsequent growth of the Centre de cancérologie Charles-Bruneau + Expansion and modernization of the emergency room + Acquisition of the 3 Tesla MRI scanner + Setup of the hybrid cardiac operating room + Procurement of 1,045 smart pumps to ensure the safe and highly accurate delivery of medications.

Youth changing the face of philanthropy in Quebec Established in 1999, this Montreal-based group of young business professionals and entrepreneurs is a chain of hope and support devoted to a single cause that is near and dear to their hearts: the health and well-being of children and expectant mothers across Quebec. The Young Leaders Circle is a committee formed by the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation Board of Directors. Every year, they organize a series of benefit activities to help Sainte-Justine improve pediatric and maternity care on an ongoing basis.

THE UNFLAGGING SUPPORT OF A TIGHT-KNIT COMMUNITY

To date, this boundlessly energetic group and their associates have raised nearly $5 million for the Foundation. The focus of this year’s contribution is the new neuroscience laboratories at the CHU Sainte-Justine Research Centre, which will explore potential treatments for neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism, schizophrenia, intellectual disabilities and language, mood and attentiondeficit disorders.

URBAN DUATHLON

LIGHTING THE WAY

Mont-Royal Gala

A zany challenge for the business community The Urban Duathlon is a fun and friendly annual competition that takes place at the end of May in downtown Montreal. For the event, business professionals come together, many in appropriately outrageous attire, to run and “BIXI” their way to victory. In 2012, the second annual Urban Duathlon raised more than $311,000, which says as much about the appeal of the event as it does about the leadership talents of its organizers!

A family-friendly magical moment Lighting the Way celebrates the joy of discovery with participants of all ages. Every year, children, parents, grandparents and friends gather in a magical setting to share in an unforgettable series of experiences. In 2012, the sixth annual Lighting the Way event raised over $132,000. Organizers also took advantage of the opportunity to launch the Young Philanthropist Program, the goal of which is to raise awareness about the importance of giving back to the community by providing young people with the tools to make a real difference in helping other children grow up healthy.

A philanthropic dining experience The Mont-Royal Gala is a culinary extravaganza that brings some 400 business executives and professionals together to enjoy the finest in haute cuisine in a breathtakingly elegant setting as they show their support for CHU Sainte-Justine. The second annual event raised over $230,000.*

Mont-Royal Ball A night of glamour and sophistication in support of Sainte-Justine The Mont-Royal Ball features a unique line-up of live entertainment, eye-popping décor, dance-the-nightaway music and an open bar. In 2012, more than 1,200 young professionals gathered to enjoy the 11th annual event and lend their support to a very worthy cause. A total $230,000* was raised for CHU Sainte-Justine as a result.

Braving the cold for a heartwarming cause Not only does the Winter Triathlon support the Foundation’s fundraising goals, it also promotes healthy lifestyle habits by encouraging business professionals to engage in outdoor physical activity. Close to a hundred fourmember teams undertake skating, cross-country skiing and running challenges as part of this yearly relay race. In 2013, the seventh annual Winter Triathlon brought in a record-breaking $601,000!

This life-changing chain of hope was initiated in 2008 by Académie Lafontaine head Claude Potvin, in response to his students’ desire to organize a race to benefit the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation following the fight that their friend and classmate Étienne Eysseric waged and won against cancer. Thanks to them and all those who have picked up the torch in the years since, the Défi-Jeunesse 1km has become one of the most compelling demonstrations of youthful optimism, energy and engagement in Quebec.

“Giving to Sainte-Justine is about supporting a vital cause and joining forces to promote medical excellence. Children are our most precious gift. We have to do everything we can to ensure they grow up healthy.”

“The Défi-Jeunesse 1 km is an extremely important event for Sainte-Justine. By making it possible to acquire smart hospital beds, the EVA virtual anesthesia monitor system and, soon, a mobile medical imaging system, these young civicminded citizens are helping to save more lives. This makes them a driving force behind our mission to deliver a standard of care that is among the best in the world. Not only do their efforts raise the money needed to procure these innovative technologies, they instil in them the belief that they have the power to effect change. These young philanthropists are at the heart of the action and are having a real impact on their community.”

WINTER TRIATHLON

Kids helping kids  The Défi-Jeunesse 1km pour Sainte-Justine is a heartwarming testament to the power of youth, compassion and community. This year, over 32,000 students from 38 private schools across greater Montreal came out in a show of support for children in need. Their goal was to save more lives by raising money to acquire state-ofthe-art equipment for Sainte-Justine’s trauma centre. And 100,000 kilometres and $770,000 later, it’s safe to say they accomplished their mission!

CACHOU INVITATIONAL GOLF TOURNAMENT A burst of generosity for the 25th anniversary The Cachou Invitational Golf Tournament benefiting the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation was held on May 28, 2012, at the Royal Montreal Golf Club. This year, players and co-chairs alike had the immense honour and privilege of celebrating the 25th anniversary of the event and doing their part once again to help CHU SainteJustine deliver on its pledge to help sick children. The resulting $1,108,500 in proceeds will go down in the Foundation’s history. A huge round of thanks goes out to our honorary co-chairs – René Angélil, Pierre Michaud and Maurice Pinsonnault – and organizing committee chair André Roy.

OGILVY EN FÊTE An elegant event benefiting our mothers and children Some 2,500 people were on hand to celebrate the third annual Ogilvy en fête, with honorary co-chairs Steve Foley, Diane Benoît, Stéphane Gonthier, Patricia Chaput, André Imbeau and Noëlla Dallaire. This oneof-a-kind event, known for its lavish décor and festive atmosphere, raised $260,000 for the CHU SainteJustine Foundation. Entertainment and sports celebrities Anne-Marie Cadieux, Luck Merville, Geneviève Borne and Joannie Rochette strutted their stuff on the runway, with Marina Orsini emceeing. A number of children from Sainte-Justine also took the stage and captured the audience’s hearts. Throughout the evening, guests enjoyed culinary creations from the likes of Buonanotte, Globe, Beatrice, Cavalli and M:brgr.

TREMBLANT 24H OF CYCLING Full steam ahead for Sainte-Justine This year marked the first time the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation was among the recipients of the Tremblant 24h of cycling fundraiser. This third edition drew in a total of 1,030 participants, 125 teams and over $604,000 benefiting four worthy causes. Tremblant 24h of cycling is an intense experience, amid a breathtaking setting, where the only thing more impressive than the participants’ performance is their generosity. The ambassadors and celebrities who took part in the event – including Jasey-Jay Anderson, Lyne Bessette, Patrick Carpentier, Sébastien Delorme, Pierre Lavoie, Sophie Nélisse and Julien Pratte – inspired their fellow cyclists and encouraged them to persevere to the very end.

FROM MIDTOWN TO SAINTE-JUSTINE Ready, set, go! This year was the fourth year in a row that the team at MidtownTM has organized De Midtown à Sainte-Justine in support of CHU Sainte-Justine’s CIRCUIT program. Led by honorary co-chairs Patrice Vachon and Claude Meunier, the event featured spinning, zumba and tennis activities with established and up-and-coming stars from Tennis Canada, as well as delectable dishes dreamed up by Jérôme Ferrer. To encourage younger people to adopt healthy lifestyle habits, Midtown also relaunched the Relève ton défi activity so that people of all ages can contribute to the fundraising effort in a variety of ways. Not only did the undertaking raise more than $62,000, the youths enrolled in the CIRCUIT program also learned a great lesson about perseverance and healthy living on a day-to-day basis.

HEARTS IN THE RIGHT PLACE LE GRAND SAPIN DE SAINTE-JUSTINE

KURLING FOR KIDS

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree … bright with generosity The fifth annual Grand sapin de Sainte-Justine event saw a record 70,000 lights sparkle and shimmer on the giant Christmas tree in front of the hospital, for the benefit of the children and families of Sainte-Justine. This message of hope and support was echoed by the members of Star Académie, Rythme FM and La Fondation Bon départ de Canadian Tire du Québec, all proud event partners. The proceeds will make it possible, among other things, for Sainte-Justine’s social services to meet the most pressing needs of families in difficult circumstances. They will also be used to support programs that aim to humanize healthcare services and promote public health.

A “sweeping” gesture of love and support There was no shortage of pride or enthusiasm at the 15th annual Kurling for Kids event, when teams from across the province came together to help sick children, a cause near and dear to the heart of event founder Robert Sears. This year’s proceeds came to a record $252,425, bringing the total raised since 1999 to more than $1.5 million! The donations, which are split equally between the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation and the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation, will allow Sainte-Justine to procure an infant pulmonary physiology device, sleep apnea monitors and breast milk pumps.

“Join us, for them. Giving is healing.” Dr. Benoît Poitras Orthopedic Surgeon and Researcher

ACADEMIC FUNDS An enormous achievement, unlike any other in Canada Coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation, the physicians – who are at the heart of Sainte-Justine – created the 24th and 25th academic funds during the year, respectively the Benoît Morin orthopedics fund and the Guy Geoffroy neurology fund.

“The hope of a single light can be enormous when it twinkles alongside thousands of others on the Grand sapin de Sainte-Justine. This is my gift in honour of every family in need of hope.” Annie Dumont Pincourt

LOUIS & VÉRO

Mois des câlins de Sainte-Justine

A celebration of love… and generosity Véronique Cloutier is a long-time ambassador of the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation and has served on its Board of Directors for six years. She never misses an opportunity to lend a hand to the Foundation – even on her wedding day! She and her husband, Louis Morissette, personally donated $10,000 to the Foundation and asked their friends and family to follow their lead by giving to Sainte-Justine in lieu of a wedding gift. This speaks volumes about Véro & Louis’s commitment to helping children in need. Over $45,000 was raised as a result of their generosity. What a wonderful way for them to celebrate their love while helping build a better tomorrow for our kids. We wish the happy couple and their entire family long life, joy and health!

A wave of pink affection once again sweeps across Quebec “Hug fairies” Véronique Cloutier and Josée Boudreault were delighted to announce on Rythme FM that the Mois des Câlins hit a new record this year with the sale of 25,000 tubes of Clarins “Rose Câlins” Lip Perfector in Jean Coutu stores throughout the province. As a result, an amazing $350,000 was donated to CHU Sainte-Justine for the new Children’s Neurodevelopmental Institute, which will bring together researchers, physicians and healthcare professionals under one roof. Including this year’s results, the total number of units sold since the beginning of the campaign now tops the 100,000 mark. We are grateful to the public for their generosity and support.

DIRECT MAIL CONTRIBUTIONS A heart as big as all outdoors They hail from around the province – men and women of all ages, cultures and backgrounds, with one important thing in common: a heart as big as all outdoors. More than 50,000 people respond to the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation’s public appeal every year. In 2012–2013, their generosity translated into more than $2.8 million in donations. These results are the ultimate proof that every single gesture, no matter what the size, can make a real difference. Thank you, one and all!

Our academic funds have become key partners in providing financial support for our clinical fellows, allowing more and more young pediatricians to hone their specialization while tending to the children and mothers at Sainte-Justine and thereby enhancing the influence of CHU Sainte-Justine on a global level.

CHARITY VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT Family-friendly fun in support of Sainte-Justine The fourth annual Joue pour la cause de Sainte-Justine tournament on July 7, 2012, saw volleyball enthusiasts and their families come together for a friendly competition open to everyone. The end result was an impressive donation of more than $12,000, which will be used to appoint a chair of the CHU Sainte-Justine Clinical Research and Knowledge Transfer Unit on Childhood Asthma. The chair will be committed to improving healthcare, services and treatment options for young asthma patients.

“We said goodbye to Alexi on November 25, 2005. As brief as our time together was, Alexi completely changed my life. He will always be a part of me. Every day, he helps me take another step forward… for the future of our children.”

In 2012–2013, the donations and investment revenues accumulated over the years hit the $10million mark! Of this extraordinary total, we are proud to confirm that more than $2.2 million has been invested in long-term growth. Such conviction from within is one of the most heartening displays of confidence we can provide to our donors. It is an enormous achievement, unlike any other in the country.

Émilie Larivée Founder of Joue pour la cause de Sainte-Justine

PLANNED GIVING Making an impact beyond your own lifetime How can you have a direct and lasting impact on the children, families, healthcare professionals and researchers at CHU Sainte-Justine? How can you let them know how important they are, even after you’re gone? By including the CHU Sainte-Justine in your will. During the past year, 45 donors honoured us and the work we do with a posthumous gift. We are always profoundly humbled, moved and inspired by the generosity, faith in the family, commitment and hope for the future that these donations inherently represent. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for these noble gestures and these enduring acts of love.

REVENUE EXPENSES

As part of our pledge to keep doing more and doing better, we are committed to upholding the highest standards in terms of monitoring our practices and controlling our costs. Our PCI security certification is indicative of how important we feel it is to protect our donors’ personal information. Keenly aware of their desire to maximize the impact of their contributions on patient outcomes at Sainte-Justine, we strive to limit our fundraising and operating expenses. We have therefore ensured that our expenseto-revenue ratio over the past five years has remained very low, compared with that of other major Canadian foundations.
