Far-Infrared saunas since 1987

Saunas designed with your health in mind. Heavenly Heat was founded in 1987 as one of America’s first distributors of far-infrared (FIR) saunas. These saunas were built “commercially”, meaning that they contained adhesives and plywood. These factors made them unsuitable for chemically-injured customers as they can react adversely to slight toxic fumes. So, in 1989, we began building unique saunas designed especially for them. As a result, Heavenly Heat saunas are “medical-grade” – built for optimal safety and effectiveness, with the best quality of materials and with construction methods that are more demanding than with ordinary saunas. Heavenly Heat’s saunas are clearly a cut above the rest. No one builds saunas like we do! Our saunas provide an ideal detox environment. Any parent seeking to eliminate toxic substances from their child can appreciate the value and wisdom of using a sauna that’s as safe as one required by a chemically sensitive person. With Heavenly Heat: • • • • • • • • • • • •

Each sauna is built without wood glue, varnish, plywood, or similar, potentially harmful materials. The highest grade (clear) of dried, white poplar is used for all wooden parts of each sauna. The framing is securely screwed together, rather than nailed and glued, as others do. Windows are made of strong, safe, heat-tempered glass. Window gaskets are custom-milled poplar rather than the usual synthetic materials. Lights are plain metal and glass, rather than the common coated metal or plastic fixtures. “Gadgets” like CD players and ionizers are excluded to avoid heating synthetics. Each sauna has a passive venting system which provides an automatic, constant air-change. The infrared (IR) heaters are tested to assure lower electro-magnetic fields (EMF). Parents can dial-in the intensity of the FIR from within the sauna. Important for safety & comfort! A carbon filter purifies the stale air leaving the sauna - before it enters your living space. Wall-connecting latches (in FIR models) are stainless steel; door latches are brass.

We have created two documents: an article, “Sauna Bathing with Youngsters, and a child’s progress chart - a weekly sauna bathing regime geared to gentleness. These are sent to parents and are to be presented to your physician for their approval. Andy Cutler, PhD, is an expert contributor to the autism-mercury yahoo group and author of “Amalgam Illness, Diagnosis and Treatment”. Andy never endorses products, but when asked if he’d recommend Heavenly Heat for someone intending to buy a FIR sauna, he said: “Yes. To the best of my understanding, the HH IR sauna distributes the heat load over the user’s body fairly uniformly - this is much less so with other brands and varies quite a bit from brand to brand. This is VERY important. Also the HH sauna is built in such a way that there are not significant amounts of phenol-formaldehyde resin to offgas and sicken the user. In fact, I believe it is built with none of this stuff …other brands generally have vast quantities …” To a person on the autism-mercury group thinking of buying a FIR sauna, Andy suggested: ".. look into the new one by Heavenly Heat."

Why Sauna? Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt, who treats autism, has written: “Peer reviewed literature shows that sweating during sauna therapy eliminates high levels of toxic metals, organic compounds, dioxin, and other toxins.” Dr. Klinghardt recommends Heavenly Heat saunas exclusively. The following are quoted snippets from various articles and studies on toxic metals: a. “Analyses of the patient's sweat indicated that appreciable amounts of mercury were excreted by this route.” b. “The mean concentrations of nickel and cadmium in sweat were higher than those reported for urine; that of lead was similar to urine.” c. “By far the earliest known form of therapy” (to induce mercury excretion), “and possibly still the most effective, is the induction of sweating by the use of sauna or steam baths.” d. “… sauna therapy of an individual with evidence of chronic mercurialism was effective at inducing a remarkable excretion of mercury via the sweat.” e. (In workers who have perspired profusely) ... “the total amount of mercury excreted in the sweat during 90 minutes ranged from 50% to 90% of that found in a 16-hour composite sample of urine (Lovejoy, et al.). f. “Sweating does indeed increase mercury excretion. Probably an hour or two of sauna is the same as 50 mg of DMSA every 4 hours for a day.” Dr. William Rea, founder of The Environmental Health Center – Dallas, is considered the world’s foremost expert on chemical sensitivity. He has put thousands of severely chemically injured patients through sauna detox. He has used a Heavenly Heat sauna since 1994. At the 2007 annual meeting of the “American Academy of Environmental Medicine”, Dr. Rea gave a talk on his detox program and the data on the chart below was presented: SAUNA EFFECTIVE RATE FOR REMOVAL OF CHEMICALS EHC-DALLAS © CHEMICAL STYRENE CHLOROFORM DICHLOROBENZENES TRIMETHYLBENZENES DICHLOROMETHANE BENZENE TRICHLOROETHYLENE XYLENES ETHYLBENZENE TETRACHLOROETHYLENE TOLUENE 1,1,1,-TRICHLOROETHANE

Not Just Any Sauna - Important Distinctions Promotional information on FIR saunas is often confusing and unreliable. This is compounded when sellers are less than forthright about how their saunas are really built. Rather than bearing the costs of building in a chemically-safest manner as we do, they rely instead on creating impressions that their saunas are built like ours through various misleading tactics. A common ploy is to use low-resin wood and describe their sauna as “hypoallergenic” or as made of non-toxic wood. The unsuspecting may assume they are made for people who are sensitive to aromatic softwoods and volatile chemicals, but the truth is often a completely different matter. An emphasis on the wood can conceal more important construction choices. A key to sauna safety lies in avoiding building materials used to bring down costs that contaminate the detox environment. Most FIR saunas are built with lots of glue as it is faster and easier than building without it, and it allows for using thin, cheaper wall paneling that is glued onto a frame or a sheet of plywood. They are built for rapid production, economy, and appearance - not to create medical-quality detox saunas. Sellers often claim to use very small amounts of glue. Due to the heat stress on the wood in a sauna, you simply cannot build a durable adhesive-based sauna with thin paneling and a “few drops” of glue. Thorough gluing is required. Some wood glue is labeled “non-toxic”, but it is not chemical-free. Most are water-emulsified plastic (PVA adhesives) with limits on the quantities of various chemical additives (biocides, preservatives, thinners, etc.). When detoxifying, the last thing you want to do is sweat out one toxin while inhaling fumes of another! Heavenly Heat uses non-corrosive steel screws and thicker paneling to assure that each sauna has the clean air that’s essential for effective detox, as well as the strength to last for decades.

Rather than being glued to the frame, these Heavenly Heat boards are securely double-screwed at each end.

The Options You can customize your sauna with more or less glass (the GL options), or add: a light in a mostly-glass room (L); in the M models, add FIR with option RB (“radiant backrest”) and/or a FIR heater under-seat (XIR); a water-based sealant to the exterior (S); an extra air filter (A) (1 is provided, good for 1 year); pre-wired stereo speakers for your sound source (SND); a recessed IR heat lamp in the ceiling (NIR); or locking casters – option "C".

The Glass/Wood Choices Each model has a set amount of glass, as listed in the “Detail Sheet” that follows. You can change that amount of glass at no charge, with these GL options. The abbreviations used for the glass options are: GLD: GL1: GL2:

GL3: a wooden room with a glass door. glass is on the front and both sides. GL4: glass is in the door and the front wall section(s). glass sections are all the way around. glass is on the front and 1 side (in-corners), or on the approximate front ½ of the A+, M1 or M2.

The Heaters Note: The A+ and the FIR models include power cords. The M models require professional hookup.

Finnish These heaters are UL/CSA-approved, deluxe stainless steel 240V models with thermostat, timer, and over-heat protection. A protective fence is placed around the heater. The stones emit FIR abundantly and allow for humidity control via moistening the hot stones.

Adding Infrared in the M models RB’s are far-infrared heated “Radiant Backrests” used in “combination saunas”. They can be re-positioned to “target” each side of the torso. Each RB has built-in FIR intensity control. They produce FIR energy primarily in the 4-14 micron range. The FIR heating in the A+ includes 2 RBs plus 2 FIR leg heaters. Several RBs can be added into each M model. At corners, RB’s can be turned against a side wall so you can stretch the legs out and retain the ideal FIR exposure upon the back. Bathers can also sit in-between two RBs which have been turned to face each other to create a “sandwiching” effect . By doing this, there is more far infrared exposure than is encountered in most FIR saunas!

FIR Heaters We used solid “ceramic emitters” for years, but our new ceramic-covered stainless steel heaters are stronger and larger than the old ones. The ceramic is a baked-on clay-based mix of minerals with zirconium oxide, the key ingredient of the first FIR sauna heaters patented in Japan. While the solid emitters are touted as having a very high infrared output, these new heaters emit FIR energy at an even higher rate. Claims about heaters can be very misinformative. For example, a claim is made for FIR saunas with carbon heaters that they provide more infrared energy as they have larger surfaces than others. That seems logical, but they provide much less exposure as their input power is diluted by being spread out and they emit less IR energy per-area than ours do. The negative impact of weak heaters is compounded by poor designs in which the heaters are spread out around the room with substantial portions of them not in direct line with the bather(s). So, much of the diluted, weak output fails to directly strike anyone’s body and is essentially “wasted”.

Model Details 1. Traditional Finnish Saunas The M Models The M’s are larger, family-sized traditional saunas with a height of 6’5”. Each model has an upper bench to experience the heat from the stones most effectively. The standard M1 and M2 models have glass on the front and both sides (GL3), while the M3 is all-wood except for the front (GL1). Radiant Backrests can be added: the M1 can use up to 4, and both the M2 and M3 can use 1-5. Extra FIR heaters for the legs (option XIR) can be added under the main bench.

The M1 is 4’7” deep by 6’2” wide. The rear bench is 5’10” long. A lower 4’1” bench runs front-to-back along the side wall, under the rear one. There’s a 15°F or so temperature variance between levels, which is often ideal for parents bathing with children or for couples, as each person can be in their own comfort zone.

This M1 model includes 2 Radiant Backrests

The M2 model is also 4’7” deep, but wider at 7’6” across. This allows for a full elevated “L” bench of 7’ X 4’1”. A narrow lower level parallels the upper seating. This is a comfortable sauna room for 3 or 4 bathers and allows a tall bather who desires to fully recline in the sauna.

An M2 model with 3 Radiant Backrests

The M3 model is our largest model at 5’9” deep by 7’6” wide. This large family-sized sauna allows for a full-sized twin set of high and low L-shaped benches, including two 7’ spans.

The FIR Models: All-Infrared Saunas Our FIR saunas are larger, more comfortable, safer, and more effective than others. In FIR saunas, the air temperature is always moderate and the warm air is a secondary body-heating factor. The intensity of the infrared exposure is the primary factor, so its control is critical. To assure utmost safety in each Heavenly Heat FIR sauna, the strength of the infrared emitted by the heater closest to the child, as well as the air temperature, is fully controllable by the parent from within the sauna. This invaluable feature assures comfort, more uniform heating, safety, and optimal detoxification benefits. It is a critical innovation not found in other FIR saunas.

When your child starts to use the sauna, the key heater directly behind them can be turned down or off, minimizing their initial FIR exposures. It can be increased gradually as they adapt and begin to detoxify safely. Once the child is acclimated, the parent can select the desired degree of exposure regardless of the sauna’s air temperature. The progress chart that accompanies each sauna leads the parent through weekly suggestions for session time, room temperature, and the level of the infrared exposure. A common weakness in FIR saunas is poor ventilation. This stems from the fact that IR does not heat air. FIR saunas get warm as the air around each heater is incidentally warmed. This inefficient heating makes it difficult to allow much cooler, fresh, outside air into the sauna to replace the stale air. The solution is to channel outside air around the heaters, so that fresh air is constantly being warmed as it enters the sauna, pushing out the contaminated air. There is no need for noisy fans or air cleaners, which are indicators of inadequate venting. Good ventilation is another key for ideal detox, and it’s included in all of our saunas.

The FIR Models The FIR-2DX This is a deluxe 2-person model used by many parents, including Jenny McCarthy, and DAN! doctors, including Dr. Phil DeMio & Dr. Kurt Woeller. It provides FIR energy with 6 heaters. Unlike most 2-person FIR saunas, it has a heater at the end of the seat, in the side wall. With this extra heater, a sole bather can stretch out while retaining FIR at their back. Children can adapt more gradually to the infrared by using the smaller FIR heater at their side, with the stronger heater behind them controlled by their parent. This model is larger than most 2-person FIR saunas and plugs into a 20-amp, 110V outlet. Stereo speakers are included. The FIR2 is the same model with the end-of-bench heater omitted for use on 15-amp, 110V.

The FIR3 At almost 6’wide, the FIR3 is a spacious 3-person FIR sauna. A single bather can recline on a 5’7” long bench. It has 8 FIR heaters. A 20-amp, 110V circuit is required. When used with 2 children, a parent can sit in-between them and intensity-control each of the heaters to their sides independently with dials positioned to their right and to their left.

The FIR IS The IS is: an “Interactive Sauna”. The concept is simple - instead of a parent & child sitting next to each other, they face each other. Instead of the FIR intensity dials being within reach of the child, as in other models, the dials are at "mom's" end. There's a lot of FIR exposure with 9 heaters: four around each end and a shared foot one at the base of the rear, center wall. All upper-body heaters – at both ends- are controllable. To enhance "interactivity", there are parallel rails across the door and the center of the rear wall so mom or dad can set down a poplar table top that hangs on the rear wall. The table is sealed with a safe no-formaldehyde, no-VOC sealant so it can be cleaned easily. You and your child can read, play games, etc. A window is deliberately left out of the child's end, so the child will sense being in a private space and will hopefully feel more secure. Mom has a view window at her end. The table can slide back towards the child and be blocked in-place so the child may feel safely contained.

The FIR4 The 4-person sauna is 54” deep by 73” side-to-side. It plugs into a 20-amp, 120V* grounded outlet. The foot room is about 21” across. There are 8 heaters – 4 above bench, 4 below. All 4 uppers are intensity controllable. This is a great unit for family & clinical use.

The Combination Model - the A+ The A+ model is a versatile 2-person sauna that integrates the benefits of FIR with the features of authentic Finnish sauna heating. Two electrical circuits are required so that you can use the sauna with either or both heating systems running. A protective fence is installed around the stone heater. Because the FIR backrests can be repositioned slightly, various options present themselves. You can, for instance, place the RBs on each side of your child, to direct the far infrared directly upon both sides of their upper body. Simply by spacing the RBs at a closer or a greater distance from their body, you can create either a strong or very mild degree of infrared exposure, in a manner that provides comfortable, even, body heating from the FIR heaters in the RBs, along with some exposure from the underseat infrared. Families often appreciate the versatility of this model as a parent and child can use it as an ultra-mild FIR detox sauna, while other family members may prefer the traditional sauna functions of higher temperatures and light steam. A parent and child can use it as a far-infrared sauna simply by pressing an electronic timer to activate the infrared and turning the thermostat to the lower temperature levels. Note: these photos show our older 3-emitter RBs which have been replaced with single, much longer ones FIR heaters.
