STRAP HINGES BY THOMAS M YOUNG

On my tube and fabric homebuilt I have used strap hinges of my own design on tailfeathers. I used strap hinges for several aerodynamic advantages. With three hinges per side on the elevators, alignment is critical if there is to be no binding. Here is the system I devised and used on the elevator and rudder of my project. After welding in the through tubes for the bolts in the rear spars of the vertical and horizontal stabilizer, I then slipped all of the pieces of the hinges onto the front spar of the rudder and elevator, added the bolt and nut, aligned it all, and welded them in place. The strap is welded to the hinge tube. The lateral load rings are welded to the control spar. The washers are welded to the strap. Before final installation I remove the hinge and drill and tap it 1/4-20 to accept a grease fitting for future lubrication (oil, not grease). I also lightly polish the bearing surfaces on both spar and hinge tube. The strap has an oversize bolt hole in it to allow it to "float" for perfect alignment. The homemade washer has a correct size hole for the bolt and is welded in place when everything is right. I use a Whitney punch for the hole in the washer; it is much more precise than drilling a hole. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. (This hint was submitted by Thomas M. STARTER SOLENOIDS

Have you ever had a starter solenoid fail to release after the engine has started? It causes the starter to continue to turn with the engine running, which is difficult to detect and can cause some costly damage and possible inconvenience. By adding a simple indicator light on the panel you will be alerted when the solenoid does not release. Connect a wire to the output side (starter side) of the starter solenoid and run it to the indicator light mounted on the panel where it will be noticed. The

light will be on during the start cycle and should go off when the start switch is released. Failure to go off indicates that the solenoid failed to release. Solenoids should be mounted vertically with the top (where the part number is printed) up.
