SOLVING A PROBLEM BY ART CLAESSENS

it came time to overhaul my O-235L2C, I was faced with the same old problem of how to get the piston pins out without hammering on them, bending the rods, etc. So off to the hardware store and, lo' and behold, I found some really neat rubber pipe couplings, so I bought one a little bigger than the diameter of the piston, hacked a couple of holes in the side for the wrist pin, threaded a piece of flat stock and stuck a bolt in it (I used an old motorcycle tire iron I found in the bottom of my tool box). Then I strapped the whole thing onto the piston and cranked those pins out nice as could be. I used a 5/16x18 bolt, ground the end to a taper and used a bearing (from a model airplane engine) and washer masking taped to the bolt to keep from marring the pin or the aluminum plug. With the piston sheathed in quarter inch rubber, the pin comes out easily with no damage to the piston and no strain on the rod.
