INDIGO CHILDREN the concept of indigo children emerged from the background of new age litterature, in which some authors who study 'auras' identified a group of persons born mostly in the 80's exhibiting a specific color or having a specific aura. The concept of aura is rooted in the conception that you can percieve 'energy' of a person, it can otherwise be embeded into the philosophy of metaphysic as described by aristotle. The scientific outlook of energy is actually derived from aristotelian concept, which see object in two different view, their states and their potential, the state of object being for example his position, and the gravity energy will be the pull downard that is inherent to the object due to his mass. This concept of energy can be applied to any object in a physical or metaphysical sense, the energy of something at a moment A being what bring the object at the moment B, aura applied to human is the energy of the person, his mood, his attitude or behavior. Newton is often considered as the father of modern science, and his thermodynamic system embody perfectly an aristotelian approach, identifying energy associated with objects, or chemical elements, electrons, heat, mecanics, and how object will behave in a particular condition, how their state will evolve and trying to extract law from observation of how object evolve and defining their energy or potential with what is known as thermo dynamic law. In new age the most popular system that will be used to modelise human energy as conceptualised in auras is the system of chakra, that are considered as the basic element that can make up a person energy, just like you could study a mecanical system by studying the metaphysical properties of the different part that compose it, human energy can be approached with the system of chakra that can be seen as the base element that make up the human energy system. Chakra are each associated with a color and a particular functionality, the chakra being concerned with the indigo aura being the 'third eye chakra' , so basically persons with an indigo aura can be defined as persons having an active 'third eye chakra' It is only one of the system that can be used to define aura, other system being synetesia, which is the system that is supposed to be used originally by new age authors to define people energy, but this system is not really based on a formal definition, but on a mental association some persons are able to do between a feeling and a color, that can be applied to come up with a color associated with people energy, their aura color. Other approach of a more psychological or medical nature could be used to define human system as well, as the ones used in psychotherapy such as freud, and having idea of the state of different part that make up the psyche or biology that compose the global 'energy' or 'aura' of the person. Freudian psychology do not issue diagnosis out of 'reading persons', it is more based on the person speaking out by herself, and being able to make up diagnosis about the person's mind, either by studying his behavior or what she feel concerned about, which can give insight to the therapeut on the state of person, but direct freudian pschoanlysis cannot integrate the concept of indigo as presented by new age author, so i'll come back at it latter on.

The concept of indigo as presented in new age will more often be based on either the definition coming from psychic who can associate people energy with a color, so on this you have to take their word for it, or either can be associated with the chakra system in which the most active composant of the person energy will be the indigo 'third eye' chakra. With synethesia, blue/indigo is often described as giving a feeling of calm and cold, in psychology it is known to decrease blood pressure, actually a color also that will make something look not guilible , feng shui associates it with the element water, and used for relaxing, the element water in feng shui as well as in aristotlean metaphysic of element is described as an element of blending, who will absorb properties of other element, which can be associated with people who will easily blend in their environement and will be generally open minded and quiet persons, not kind the person you would notice, and who will be easily impacted by their environement or being opposite of 'stand out' more introvert kind of person. The third eye chakra is related to mental activity, the activity of the third eye chakra will be associated with manipulating abstract concept, learning, imagination, is located physically in the brain, and associated with the activity of the pineal gland, also associated with dreaming, reasoning, intelectual activity, consciousness. Chakra system can be loosly associated with freudian psychology with the unconscious 'it', associated with primal need, associated with red chakra located at the bottom end of the spine, associated with libido and survival, third chakra (yellow) being located at the solar plexus being equivalent to the freudian 'ego' 'sucbonscious', sense of identity as shaped by the resolution of needs through social interaction, third eye chakra (indigo) being linked with 'super ego', 'consciousness' , center of the conscious intent, self control, reasoned person. Basically you could say a person with an indigo aura is your typical geek, introvert and dreamy and analystic, not being very concerned about his identity into a group, or about more 'primal needs' such as sex or social activity. Starting from those definition, i will now address the common misconceptions and abuse that are commonly found among new age community, and how it is used in a way that can be damaging or deceptive to the persons, in the context of new age communities, and even try to inline the fascist dimention incorporated into the new age ideologies. The most common misconception and language abuse found in new age community revolve around the two different kind of imagination as defined by freud and carl Jung, which are passive imagination and active imagination Active imagination is when imagination is focused on solving a problem, or focused on an objective to solve it. Passive imagination is either displayed when the mind is left wandering , and that random though popup, or with the freudian free association mecanism, when a person is presented with an image or an object, and that the person freely associate a though with it, where one leaps freely from one image, word, thought to the next with no idea of the goal. Passive imagination is not the result of a specific intention, and in term of freudian psychology, is supposed to be caused by subconscious issue surfacing, like when one leave its mind wandering, random issue about the person's life will often pop out, the same mecanism is at play during

dreaming stage of sleep, the issue that subconscious may be faced with will surface into consciousness, giving dream state while sleeping, or random though poping up that are due to subconscious complex during wake state. It is interesting to note at this point that the indigo are often presented as being 'wrongly' diagnosed with attention deficit, and that attention deficit in any psychological term is by definition inability to focus on a task, because of random or compulsive though entering consciousness due to subconsious issues, that will disturb one's attention and ability to enter in 'active' or 'directed' imagination, as being focused on a task at school or at work or even in most simple association experiment which Jung developed to show how the ability of the ego to focus upon a relatively simple task (the association of words) can be impaired by unconscious complexes. Or even ability to enter meditative state as simple as watching an inpersonal image such as a lotus or geometrical patterns, mandalas or other. It is not very clear from a pure chakra analysis of 'third eye activity' if its activity should be more associated with the passive or active type imagination, but in freudian psychology the part of the psyche associated with consciousness is the part that is about ability to a person to act rationally and in a reasoned manner, and is precisly about the ability to focus the attention on a task or on a conscious conception of self that the person will be able to maintain to function consciously in its environement, which is why they will use free association in the context of the therapy for the person to issue and express those subconscious complexes from free association, that are supposed to give hints to the therapeut about the nature of those complexes and how those complex should be solved. It is also interesting to note indigos will be defined as having trouble with authority and assigned tasks which are just also reflection of subconscious complex interfering with attempt to have a discplined mind focused on a task, and also linked to attention deficit From there, you commonly have new age 'teachers' emphasing the aspect that indigo is about having intense dreams or being prone to attention deficit due to overhelming passive imagination, which is just the result of unresolved subconscious complex, the mind without complex have few if any dream, and the mind without worries don't have a very important passive imagination. The concern for a freudian psychologist would be to analyse those thoughts to resolve them in order to decrease the amount and intensivity of dreams, intrusive though, for the person to be able to focus his intention on conscious objective for longest time possible, zen budhism is actually very close to this, with concept of emptying the mind by resolving subconscious/unconscious issue to increase ability to focus on intent and conscious task, but in new age community, you often find teacher who will enable those feature as being part of being 'indigo', wherease they are just part of dynfunction of the mind, or actually having 'third eye issues', aka not being able to focus the active imagination into a defined task, or inability to focus on learning or going into long mediations. So basically, the kind of person who will be attracted by the new age concept of indigos, are person who will be typical geek, who will often seek to connect with those environement because they have questions, or issue in their life, or emotional issues, and will be attracted by the list of trait that are supposed to define what is an 'indigo person', and those trait include lot of symptoms of a person who has an active mental , including ppl who have more intense subconscious complexes, or issue that they will seek to resolve, often insecurities or questions pertaining to their conception of reality, that will be naturally important for a person who function mostly out of conscious intent rather than on unconscious or subconscious need like it can be more the case with other 'aura colors', which will often also come up with lot of complexes and repressed thoughts.

Another form of language abuse commonly found in new age community, is the association of 'indigo' with 'psychic ability', and binding this with being compassionate, and displaying empathy, empathy showed as ability to feel other persons emotions, this being again loosly approached with a christian sense of 'spirituality', because theorician who will present wild animals or 'human nature' as being deprived of any sense of compassion. First thing to consider, is that compassion and empathy as presented in new age are not spiritual in any sense of the term. most animals, specially mamals, are able to display compassion, if only to protect their children, and even experiments with rats or other rodents showed they often prefer to free one of their mate rather than having a reward in food, and most mamals are able to display compassion and empathy, and according to most religion, animals are not spirituals. Compassion and empathy are not a learned behavior, but an instinctive behavior, that do not depend on a conscious intent of the person, but are more part of uncontrolled, unattended instinctive reaction, more belonging to the realm of the freudian unconscious or subconscious than to a conscious reasoned behavior, showing ability of the person to have a conscious moral judgement on a situation, to be able to achieve a sense or morality. 'Psychic' by definition is 'what come of the mind', so something of an actualy 'Psychic nature' take form of an idea, an image, a concept, which is also what the third eye is about, being able to manipulate abtract concept and being able of consciousness, it is very easy to associate 'empathy' and 'feeling other emotions' with being 'psychic' but they are radically different, what come of the mind is by definition what doesn't come from the senses, or from a perception of the world, but comes from the result of imagination, imagination is being able to come up with new concept, imagination cannot be told be the result of a perception of the outside world. Feeling of empathy and compassions are not the result of imagination and are not 'psychic' in nature, but result of mere perceptions, and are barely cognitive, or if you consider difference between man and animal is man is able to act uppon conscious idea, empathy is basically animalistic and not 'psychic' , not result of imagination or mental activity. It can be noted that the basic theory of freudian psychology is about how instincts and impulsion will enter in conflict with the exterior world, which is the whole objective of education, that a person is able to be conscious of her act, and to control her instinct, or to determine her behavior in a conscious intented manner , based on a conception of society and its role into it, rather than following non conscious unintented instincts. The abolition of the rational self can sure feel great regarding freeing of the primal instinct that will always be countered by social norm and exterior world, but that can hardly be called being 'psychic' or 'spiritual', and accepting this state of thing as the finality of oneself spiritual progression will just maintain the person in a eternal state of having their complex unresolved and unable to form self relient moral values that allow the person to function as a civilised person in society, and even a requirement for being able to display focused active imagination. Basically all those misconceptions will more render the persons impaired his in cognitive ability, and encouraged not to form opinion through focused active imagination, or reasoned approach on reality , to put the person in the percetion of an irrational chaotic world, devoid of morality, that will render the person entierly dependent on an instinctive reaction to her environement, rather than on self reliant concept produced by active imagination to define her attitude and behavior. All those trend will be used most of the time by 'new age guru' to strip moral value and conscious behavior from a person, replacing it by the concept of 'widsom from within', and this within being basically either passive imagination or the notion of emotional empathy, basically ability to feel

other persons emotions, notably the one of the guru or other persons of the community, which is just equivalent to destabilise a persons's moral value to replace them by a behavior oriented toward feeling the guru's or other persons emotions , without forming any sort of rational behavior based on the result of active imagination who should be the real sense of 'widsom from within', feeling other persons emotion is not gaining widsom or knowledge that render one able to control his behavior toward a self reliant view of morality. The nature of education as concieved in most occidental countries is an education based on learning skills to be used in an industrial context, mostly having to do with machines, and not focused on knowledge of the mind, or psychology, or knowledge about emotions, which is traditonally the role of religions or 'spirituality' which make it easy for guru to claim that emotional issue cannot be solved by academic knowledge, which make them loosly associate emotional healing with being irrational in nature, and that they must be based on instinctive reaction rather than on knowledge and conscious rational intent. According to all major religion, the goal is more to be able to gain knowledge on emotional reaction, to put them in perspective of a tales who put a character in a certain situation, to gain insight about them and how to react to them, and about their very nature, through either peotry or philophy, but the goal of religion and 'enligthement' is to gain knowledge on situation to be able to act consciously on a percieved pain or suffering in a 'non entropic' conscious manner. It is there that the cultic dimension enter into scene, by exploiting the person's feeling of insecurity or incertitude, and often lack of social contact which lead to all kind of complex in itself, and by making the persons more focused on the part of passive imagination, triggered in reaction to someone or some concept, like even through channelling, that is just basically extracting properties of the will of some entity, that will not render their mind active in a positive way regardig productivity, or solving problem, and it is very common of guru in general to present themselve as friendly person who, with the help of some broad mystical concepts, will be able to give the illusion to have answer for all the mystery of the world that a person could seek in order to solve personal issues or objectives, or even unrealised subconscious complexes. This is very typical of any cult along the whole history since roman who used sacrifice to please the gods, and giving mystical explanation for phenomenas that are worrying population, the good old opium of the mass, give people false hope, and simplistic way to approach problem in a friendly manner that is presented as benevolant for humanity, and 'revealing occult secrets' that render one able to solve all his problem, litterally 'magically' . During this process, the person will be made completly dependent on the 'guru' to define his view on reality, and new age embed lot of element of rejection of the 'conventional society', which will look attractive with people who will naturally not be very big into social interaction, so it will have the effect to anhilate the psycholigical need to hold some things as true and necessary in one's psychology as the society is showed in bad light, and the value and concept embeded with it is as well, to replaced by a more chaotic or mystical unordered view of reality, which is actually very close to anhbilating the social pressure from a social point of view, like state of wilderness, close to rouseau concept of 'natural man' that is unaffected by freudian complexes imposed by society. There it is important to stress the relation between knowledge and mental sanity, as what will define one's behavior and morality as a whole is precisly the knowledge that a person will hold for true, what render one able to concieve himself consciously in the society is taking for granted that the world contain some sort of constance , and this constance and order are the thing on which one will build his conscious behavior, what will make someone 'conscious' and responsible, able to anticipate the result of his actions and to understand their consequences, and to be able to be have

any sense of confidence in the future and having a sense of stability. So non solely new age 'teachers' will often emphasis more the traits of 'passive imagination' sign of subconsious complex, and will as well anhilate one's conception of social identity, with the sheding of the 'conventional society' in bad light, that will be most likely to leave the person focused on his complexes and destroying the 'social barrier' that normally prevent one to act like a wild animal driven by his instinct, with only the concept that the world is all chaotic and unordered, in which are often found mixed all kind of concept derived from quantum physics about the global lawlessness and lack of constance and order of the world that allow one to build moral value and identity on. It is basically calling to a total infantilisation and dersponsabilisation, demoralisation of the person, in which the person attitude will only be defined regarded vague concept of 'energy' , that are just loose concept based on feeling that doesn't give any intelectual concept of the situation at hand and completly devoid of any morality, that will be as well loosly categorised as intuition with the same language abuse used with the confusion of the two form of imagination. Specially regarding the kind of person that will be attracted to it, they are typically geek intelectual person who are used to conduct themsleve rather rationally and consciously, and not actually being too much focused on emotions or sentimental part of themselve, but basing their awareness on more conceptual view of reality, it will be most likely to be very destabilising for the person to switch her functionning from 'intelectual' to 'feeling', and those person will be often loosely presented as 'empathetic' where they are in fact ppl who will be generally very aware of their surrounding, but in a very mental manner, and will not be used to be driven in the behavior by emotion but with thinking, the whole thing will be totally destabilising the person psyche, and transfer her conscious controlled behavior to a feeling based approach wherease the whole world is just defined by her perception of other person 'energy' with very vague if any intelectual conception linked with it, basically the person who is naturally geek and shy will by immersed in a choatic world of irrational empathy and chaotic universe to define her behavior. Now , last but not least, indigos will be presented as 'system busters', and here to carry a change to the planet, embodying all the aspect of any fascist motion, albeit being rather non violent in nature, they still embed all the aspect of driving adherant toward concept of 'new society' 'new age', of which they are to become for citizen and ambassor. Among those concepts, you will often find things inspired from 'utopism' , such as atlantis, or more animist like 'mother gaia', but all will be nothing but an attempt to push a 'feeling' 'instinctive' approach on his behavior, associated with being part of a concept of 'children of gaia' , or 'children of earth', being just defined by rejecting industrial education, loosly called 'rational', by substying it to the concept that 'spiritual' is about 'mysticism' and 'what is not academic', and from there encouraging to conduct himself as a citizen of gaia for the change only based on feeling and instinctive behavior, which is what any form of religion or spiritualy will precisly want to avoid, for that the person is able to be conscious of problems and be able to act uppon concious active imagination to solve those problems, instead of installing this idea of radical society change very typical of all fascist group, typically targetting ppl who will already have trouble with society, and lot of complex due to the way this society work, and basically driving to the more primal reaction to face the problem, instead of being truly 'spiritual' or 'enligthening'
