REFLECTION | RÉFLEXION A very warm welcome to the opening concert of our 2016/17 season! It marks the beginning of an exciting new season, one which I look forward to sharing and cherishing with you. The concert features three brilliant and virtuosic orchestral works inspired by philosophy: Strauss meets Nietzsche in the legendary Also sprach Zarathustra, Bernstein meets Voltaire in the witty and whimsical Candide Overture and Canada’s own Derek Charke meets Plato’s Symposium in tonight’s world premiere, commissioned for the NAC Orchestra by Harvey and Louise Glatt. Each of these works interprets some of philosophy’s greatest thinkers through music and opens us up to a seductive, compelling and abstract metaphysical world! Of course, the cherry on tonight’s cake is Joshua Bell’s return to the NAC, interpreting Brahms’s immortal and ravishingly beautiful Violin Concerto… Welcome and enjoy!
