Know Your Civil Air Regulations n the course of handling the mail which comes to EAA Headquarters it has become evident to your editors that a sizeable number of members are unfamiliar with some of the Civil Air Regulations applicable to such matters as

design, repair, overhaul, engines, gliders, rotorcraft and so on. Obviously, a familiarity with pertinent regulations must be had if experimental work, design, engine testing, antique restoration and similar projects are to be done in a manner acceptable to FAA people. Therefore we print this guide to Civil Air Regulation

literature. Until recently, it had been the practice of the CAA and then the FAA to publish regulations in two types of pamphlets. Civil Air Regulations were published in the form of "CAR" publications of modest size, ranging from a few to a score of pages. These set forth the regulations only. A companion set of Civil Air Manuals contained detailed information on the technical, engineering, mechanical and practical methods to be followed, to make airplanes and aircraft work comply with the regulations.

At this time, a change is being made. A new policy is to have both the regulations (CAR) and technical data (CAM) combined in single publications, known as Civil Aeronautics Manuals. The following newly-issued CAMs are available from the Superintendent of Documents, Government Printing Office, Washington 25, D. C. We list those of direct interest to EAA members: CAM No. Title 1 Certification, Identification and Marking of Aircraft and Related Products 3 Airplane Airworthiness—Normal, Utility and Acrobatic Categories 18 Maintenance, Repair and Alteration of Airframes, Powerplants, Propellers and Appliances
