What exactly is a youth camp for voluntary work ? A little bit of history : The movement - Volunteer Camps - came into being in Europe in the nineteen twenties, at the initiative of the International Civil Service ( SCI), and other associations, all aimed at working for the construction of peace and the coming together of people. A special place for meeting people: The volunteer camp is a special place for young people from different social backgrounds and cultures to meet. An international dimension: In general, the international aspect of a volunteer camp makes it a place of great cultural diversity. Spending work and leisure time together allows everyone to get to know and understand each other, breaking down barriers, and testing any preconceived ideas of one’s self and others. It is a chance to see beyond one’s own social and cultural horizon. Cultural differences become a source of personal enrichment, of cohesion and collective emulation, thus contributing to the reconciliation of peoples and cultures.

Leisure time There are many activities on offer at Elliant: open-air swimming pool, riding school, adventure park… As Elliant is only 20kms from the sea, we can also offer water sports such as sailing, kayak or surfing, or just simply visit one of the many local beaches. There are many places of interest to visit in the area: Quimper, Pont Aven, nature reserves, parks etc. There are also many cultural events on offer during the summer such as the Festival de Cornouaille or the Europeades. Both participants and the youth leaders organize work and leisure time. Activities may be added depending on the interests and suggestions of the group.

The Volunteer Camp at Elliant This year the Elliant Youth Service is organizing it’s third Volunteer camp .The previous two camps brought together young people from Elliant and Mountbellow, a town in Ireland twinned with Elliant.

The voluntary project This year the aim of the project, working about two to three hours a day, is to tidy up the country paths used by ramblers, clearing back overgrowth, putting up signs etc. There is also another project, in case of bad weather, to renovate and decorate a room in the youth center, painting, decorating, and graffiti.

Meals : Each person will take part in the preparation of meals, and other collective tasks such as washing -up, shopping, etc.

Group rules On the first day the group members and leaders will decide on the rules by which the group will function. This charter will be in place throughout the stay.
