Le Futur Proche In French we sometimes use the verb ‘aller’ to talk about things we are going to do in the near future. e.g. I am going to do my homework
-
Je vais faire mes devoirs
In this case we conjugate the verb ‘aller’ to agree with the person we are talking about, and the next verb is left in the infinitive. What do the following mean?
Je vais aller au cinema demain Tu vas écouter la musique dans ta chambre Nous allons prendre le train à la plage
Note how the second verb in the sentence (in bold writing) is in the infinitive. To write a sentence in the negative in the future you simply put ne before the verb aller and pas after the verb aller. e.g. Je ne vais pas manger les frites Now try the following exercises: a. Fill in the blanks with the infinitive of the verb in brackets. 1. Vous allez __________ les courses au supermarché? (to do) 2. Mes amis vont __________ pour l’examen. (to study) 3. Mon père va _________ beaucoup cette semaine. (to work) 4. Je vais ___________ dans la salle de bains. (to shower (myself)) 5. Nous allons ____________ le dîner demain. (to prepare) 6. Elle va _________ à la piscine. (to swim) 7. Pierre et Paul vont ____________ des livres à la bibliothèque. (to borrow) 8. Tu vas _____________ le petit dejeuner à l’école? (to eat) 9. Nous allons _____________ une promenade au jardin publique. (to do) 10. Mes parents vont ___________le train demain matin. (to take)
b. Qu’est ce que tu vas faire demain? Write six sentences about what you are going to do tomorrow (demain) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. c. Now try to write the following sentences 1. I am going to do the gardening with my mother.
2. At 8 o’clock I am going to eat my breakfast
3. You are going to go to the cinema
4. Mark is not going to study for the exams
5. We are going to go to the beach by car
6. Are you (pl) going to watch the film?
7. I am not going to play football tomorrow evening
8. They (m) are going to go to the disco
9. Are you going to do the shopping in the supermarket?
10. My mother is going to prepare the diner in the kitchen.
