Development of a Geographical Information System for the Northern Region - Portugal Problems: • Basic data inaccuracies and lack of information. - Inaccurate localization of heritage Due to the institutional reorganisation of the entities responsible for heritage management, we have not yet been granted access to the database with the georeferenciation of the classified heritage. Thus, the data we have been using currently is a less accurate location of the heritage resources in the Northern Region – Portugal, made available online by the Portuguese Environment Institute (IA). Furthermore, there is a lack of uniformity among the databases owned by different entities involved in heritage management; - Inaccuracies in the edition and ordering of streams, making it necessary to re-edit and re-order (according to Strahler) around 180 000 segments of the hydrographic network;

Development of a Geographical Information System for the Northern Region - Portugal Problems: • Vectorisation and georeferenciation of the geological chart of the Northern Region - Portugal - Faced with the budgetary impossibility of purchasing the digital geological cartography, it was necessary to carry out the georeferenciation and vectorisation of the geological chart. For that purpose we used charts of the Northern region at scale 1:200 000 and 1:50 000 (for some areas not included in the chart at scale 1:200 000).

Development of a Geographical Information System for the Northern Region - Portugal

Development of a Geographical Information System for the Northern Region - Portugal Difficulties: • Orthophotomaps and Rainfall Records - so far we have not been granted access to the orthophotomaps of the Northern Region (at scale 1:5 000) although its availability had been previously agreed. - so far we have not received rainfall records, although we have requested them to the Portuguese Meteorological Institute (IM), which makes it necessary to consult and use incomplete data, made available online by the Portuguese Water Institute (INAG).

Natural Hazard Assessment in the Northern Region – Project Status Conduction of more detailed case-studies with the objective of :

- minimising the problems arisen from the attempt of having access to data concerning the Northern Region – Portugal, namely the exact location of the sites and monuments with cultural heritage value; - allow the application of more accurate, more successful methodologies only at a larger scale; - demonstrate the vulnerability of the cultural and natural heritage towards different types of risk.

Research Works in Progress (Case Studies): • Methodologies of Susceptibility and Vulnerability Analysis of the Coastline to the Risk of Retreat The case-study of Espinho • Geomorphological Hazards and Cultural Heritage. The example of the Sanctuary of Senhora da Peneda in Arcos de Valdevez; • Urban Flood Risk and its Impacts over the Built Cultural Heritage: Analysis Methodology for the Identification of the most Flood Prone Areas in Matosinhos.
