I see Liszt’s Concerto No. 2 as a true symphonic poem with piano obbligato. It’s strongly influenced by Wagner: the opening theme sounds like a chorus straight out of Photo © Elias
Tannhaüser, and indeed, Liszt conducted the premiere of that work in Weimar. In contrast to his first concerto, Liszt uses “leitmotifs” that are primarily melodic, and subsequently transforms them to construct lively, virtuosic passages. The work is essentially made up of poetic cells, and it highlights many of the orchestra’s solo instruments, creating a chamber music effect where the subject shows great melodic freedom. I’m delighted to present this concerto, which hasn’t been performed at the NAC for about 30 years.
