Message from the Executive Producer Welcome to the first event in this year’s Series C, Lucy Guerin Inc’s Weather. Series C performances are among my favorites, as we have a chance to see the dancers and the choreographic language up close and in an intimate environment. Lucy Guerin’s work has made an indelible mark on the contemporary dance scene in Australia and beyond. Her return after almost 10 years with this intense yet enchanting new work, Weather, is long overdue. The 2013-14 Dance season features both established and new dance makers in a variety of offerings, both within and outside of the NAC. The next Series C event, Aakash Odedra, is also part of the February Face2Face Series featuring 4 brilliant soloists, and in April we introduce the up and coming Montreal choreographer Virginie Brunelle. I invite you to delve into a broad range of styles and ideas that this season of compelling artists will offer you throughout the year. Thank you from all of us at NAC Dance.

Bienvenue à la première représentation de la série C de cette année, le spectacle Weather de Lucy Guerin Inc Les spectacles de la série C comptent parmi mes préférés, car ils nous offrent un environnement intime pour découvrir de près des danseurs et un langage chorégraphique particulier. Les créations de Lucy Guerin ont laissé une marque indélébile sur la scène de la danse contemporaine en Australie et ailleurs. Lucy Guerin Inc is an Australian dance company established in Melbourne in 2002 to create and tour new dance works. Renowned for the skill and originality of its small group of performers, it is a flexible organisation dedicated to challenging and extending the art of contemporary dance. The company is committed to the exploration of everyday events and the redefinition of the formal concerns of dance. New productions are generated through an experimental approach to creative process, and may involve voice, video, sound, text and industrial design as well as Guerin’s lucid physical structures. Crucially, this is always a choreographic exploration, striving for visual, emotional and physical revelations that could not be generated or communicated in any other artform than dance. Lucy Guerin Inc has been a major influence on the growing identity of Australian dance, which stems from the company’s programmatic research into choreographic practice supported through several initiatives. Pieces for Small Spaces is its annual curated program for new dance works by emerging choreographers in Melbourne. First Run provides an opportunity for artists to share their current practice through studio showings of first-draft works. The company also offers workshops with local and international artists, presents one-off special events and maintains an artist-in-residence and secondment program.

From Lucy Guerin, one of Australia’s most renowned choreographic talents comes an atmospheric new dance work that embodies the breathtaking dynamics of the elements. An immersive experience inspired by the weather that surrounds and defines us, it employs the visceral sensations and dynamic flow of weather systems to generate an intense choreographic exploration of the physical body’s connection to the natural world.

Note from the Choreographer / Mot de la chorégraphe The ideas underpinning this work stem from a desire to explore the possibilities of the human body’s connection to the elemental forces of weather. The range of this subject is limitless and universal, but for me, weather has a natural expression through dance and movement. It can be defined as the ‘state of the air’, and in this work, this invisible drama is made visible through movement and design. The cause and effect of moving air to create pressure systems informs the choreographic structure of the work, and defines the dynamics and performance of the movement material. Weather affects our mood, dress, food, activities, sports, conversations, architecture and our identity. Many works of art and literature have used the idea of a drought, a storm, the tropics or the icy outreaches of the poles to speak about the psychology of individuals, relationships or societies. Making Weather has been for me a visceral immersion into choreographed movement and the body on stage. The motivation for the material has stemmed from the physical sensation and impact of the elements on the body, abstract representations of weather through maps and diagrams and our identification of human emotions with different weather phenomena. It occurred to me many times throughout the process that the human body shares with weather the qualities of moving air, water, mist and heat, and that the air we breathe in and out becomes part of the weather at some stage. In today’s world, weather is acting like a barometer for our environmental disasters. As the polar ice caps melt and the holes widen in the ozone layer, we have to accept that humans are now a factor in the creation and alteration of weather. Our actions have tipped

C’est le désir d’explorer les liens possibles entre le corps humain et les forces élémentaires du climat qui ont nourri ma réflexion lorsque j’ai créé cette œuvre. Ce thème est universel et sans limites, mais pour moi, la danse et le mouvement offrent une façon naturelle d’exprimer le climat, que l’on pourrait définir comme « l’état de l’atmosphère ». Dans l’œuvre que j’ai créée, ce drame invisible prend tout à coup une forme concrète par le truchement du mouvement et de la forme. Les causes et les conséquences des déplacements d’air créant les systèmes de pression ont inspiré la structure chorégraphique de l’œuvre et défini la dynamique et l’exécution de la gestuelle. Notre humeur, notre habillement, notre alimentation, nos activités, nos sports, nos conversations, notre identité et l’architecture qui nous entoure sont influencés par le climat dans lequel nous vivons. Nombreuses sont les œuvres artistiques et littéraires qui ont eu recours aux symboles de la sécheresse, de la tempête, des tropiques ou au contraire des terres glacées des pôles pour illustrer la psychologie des personnages, les rapports qu’ils ont entre eux ou les sociétés dans lesquelles ils vivent. Pour créer Weather, je me suis viscéralement immergée dans le mouvement chorégraphique et dans l’évolution du corps sur scène. Les motivations de la gestuelle découlent de la sensation physique et des effets des éléments sur le corps, des représentations abstraites du climat par l’intermédiaire de cartes et de diagrammes, et de l’association que nous faisons entre certaines émotions humaines et divers phénomènes météorologiques. Tout au long du processus de création, j’ai pensé souvent que le corps humain, tout comme le climat,

the balance resulting in uncertainty in the ‘natural’ order of things. The attempt by scientists to understand, record and predict the weather is only partially successful and I think it is this ability to defy our logic and to overwhelm us with its force that ultimately draws me to this subject. This aspect of nature cannot be controlled or subdued and is a poetic reminder that we are not the masters of the universe. Dance shares with the weather a resistance to easy interpretation. It is about force, direction, dynamics and form. But once the body stops dancing, nothing remains, and once the cyclone is still, we are left with only air. It is motion that brings them both into being. This work has been a return for me to a focus on pure movement and the fascination I have for choreographing the human body. These exceptional dancers have contributed to both the choreographed and the improvised movement in Weather and without their willingness, superlative talents and belief in what we do, I could not have made this work. The stimulating dialogue I have had with my design and music collaborators has also impacted strongly on the creation of this piece and I owe much to their having strong visions within their own practices to bring to this work.

participe au déplacement de l’air, de l’eau, de la brume et de la chaleur, et que l’air que nous inspirons et expirons contribue lui aussi à un certain point au processus climatique. Dans le monde actuel, le climat est le baromètre de nos catastrophes environnementales. Devant la fonte des calottes glaciaires et l’élargissement des trous de la couche d’ozone, nous sommes bien obligés de reconnaître que les humains jouent un rôle dans la création et la modification du climat. Nos actions ont entraîné un déséquilibre, ajoutant ainsi une dimension d’incertitude dans l’ordre « naturel » des choses. Les experts ne parviennent pas totalement à comprendre, enregistrer et prédire les phénomènes météorologiques, et je crois que c’est ce pouvoir qu’a le climat de déjouer notre logique et de nous submerger par sa puissance qui m’a finalement attirée vers ce thème. Il est impossible de contrôler ou d’assujettir cet aspect de la nature, qui nous rappelle de façon poétique que nous ne sommes pas les maîtres de l’univers. Tout comme le climat, la danse refuse de se plier aux interprétations simplistes. La danse, c’est la force, la direction, la dynamique et la forme. Mais lorsque le corps s’arrête de danser, il ne reste plus rien; de même, lorsque la tempête se calme, il ne reste plus que l’air. C’est uniquement le mouvement qui les fait exister. Cette œuvre a été pour moi l’occasion de revenir au mouvement pur et de céder à la fascination que j’ai pour la chorégraphie du corps humain. Les danseurs exceptionnels avec qui j’ai travaillé dans Weather ont contribué à la fois à la chorégraphie et aux improvisations, et je n’aurais jamais pu créer cette œuvre sans leur disponibilité, leur immense talent et leur foi dans ce que nous faisons. Le stimulant dialogue que j’ai engagé avec mes collaborateurs à la scénographie et à la musique a eu également une incidence énorme sur la création de cette pièce. Le spectacle doit beaucoup aux visions personnelles de chacun d’entre eux dans leur domaine particulier de compétences.

Lucy Guerin

Born in Adelaide, Australia, Lucy Guerin graduated from the Centre for Performing Arts in 1982 before joining the companies of Russell Dumas (Dance Exchange) and Nanette Hassall (Danceworks). She moved to New York in 1989 for seven years, where she danced with Tere O’Connor Dance, the Bebe Miller Company and Sara Rudner, and began to produce her first choreographic works. She returned to Australia in 1996 and worked as an independent artist, creating new dance works including Two Lies, Robbery Waitress on Bail, Heavy and The Ends of Things. In 2002 she established Lucy Guerin Inc in Melbourne to support the development, creation and touring of new works with a focus on challenging and extending the concepts and practice of contemporary dance. Recent works include Weather, Untrained, Human Interest Story and Conversation Piece. Guerin has toured her work extensively in Europe, Asia and North America as well as to most of Australia’s major festivals and venues. Lucy Guerin has had works commissioned by Chunky Move, Dance Works Rotterdam, Ricochet (UK), Mikhail Baryshnikov’s White Oak Dance Project (USA) and Lyon Opera Ballet (France) among many others. Her many awards include the Sidney Myer Performing Arts Award, a New York Dance and Performance Award (a ‘Bessie’), several Green Room Awards, a Helpmann Award and an Australian Dance Award.

Oren Ambarchi

Oren Ambarchi

A composer and multi-instrumentalist, Oren Ambarchi creates works that occupy the cracks between several schools, spanning modern electronics and minimalism, along with the physicality of rock music, stripped back to its bare bones. Ambarchi has performed and recorded with a diverse array of artists, including Fennesz, Keiji Haino, John Zorn, Jim O’Rourke, Evan Parker, Merzbow and Thomas Brinkmann. Since 2004, he has worked with American avant-metal outfit Sunn 0))), contributing to many of their recordings and live performances. Ambarchi recently composed music for Chunky Move’s Connected and Benedict Andrews’s Belvoir St production Every Breath, and collaborated with the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra at the 2012 Tectonics festival in Reykjavik.

Compositeur et multi-instrumentiste, Oren Ambarchi crée des musiques qui se situent en marge de diverses écoles, entre la musique électronique moderne et le minimalisme, animées par l’énergie brute du rock totalement dénudé. Since completing his studies in 2002 at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Benjamin Cisterne has been involved in the creation of lighting designs for numerous productions, and has toured extensively as both designer and master electrician and completed artistic and technical residencies in Australia and Europe. He has worked with many choreographers, including Gavin Webber (Dancenorth/Independent), Phillip Adams (Balletlab), Luke George and Gabrielle Nankivell, as well as creating lighting designs for The Australian Ballet and Chunky Move, and his work has been recognised by the Green Room Awards on multiple occasions. His other design work includes exhibitions at the Australian War Memorial and the National Sports Museum, and lighting design for the Darwin Entertainment Centre.

Depuis qu’il a terminé ses études en 2002 à la Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Benjamin Cisterne a signé les éclairages de nombreuses productions, a effectué de grandes tournées, à la fois comme concepteur des lumières et chef électricien, et a pris part à des résidences artistiques et techniques en Australie et en Europe. Robert Cousins

Robert Cousins

Robert Cousins has worked as a graphic designer, theatre designer and production designer for film. His designs for theatre productions include Belvoir (Cloudstreet, Waiting for Godot, The Threepenny Opera, Gulpilil, A Midsummer Nights Dream, Who’s afraid of Virginia Woolf, Strange Interlude, Peter Pan and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof), Sydney Theatre Company (Julius Caesar, The Serpent’s Teeth, The War of the Roses, Kafka’s Metamorphosis and The Season at Sarsaparilla) and Malthouse (Moving Target). His film work includes production design on Candy, Romulus, My Father and Balibo. Cousins wrote and edited 25 Belvoir Street, a history of the first 25 years of Belvoir Street Theatre, and is currently designing a production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle to be presented by Opera Australia in 2013. In 2011 Cousins was awarded a Sydney Myer Creative Fellowship in recognition of his work.

Robert Cousins a travaillé comme graphiste, scénographe et décorateur au cinéma. Shio Otani

Shio Otani is a Melbourne based costume designer. Self confessed crafter, she is interested in all things handmade and works in diverse platforms such as theatre, dance, jewelry design and textiles. Shio has designed costumes for an award winning theatre company, Back to Back Theatre (Ganesh vs The Third Reich, Food Court, Small Metal Object, Soft), Lucy Guerin Inc. (Weather), Jo Lloyd (Public Unpublic, High Maintenance, Hospitals and Airports), Antony Hamilton (Forces x Antony Hamilton), David Rosetzky (Untouchable, Hothouse, Custom Made) Rhian Hinkley (Boz’n’Hok vs Theatre of Speed, Porn Star, Face of the West) and Encyclopedia of Animals (Urchin).

Shio Otani est une conceptrice de costumes de Melbourne qui s’intéresse aux multiples facettes du travail d’artisanat. Shio graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts with a BA in Dance and studied Fashion Studies at Box Hill Institute of TAFE. She has also graduated from Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE with Advanced Diploma in Jewelry Design.

Amber trained at the Victorian College of the Arts, graduating in 2006 as the recipient of the Mary Orloff Prize for Most Outstanding Dancer. Amber began her professional career with Chunky Move, and has toured Gideon Obarzanek’s GLOW and Mortal Engine throughout Australia, Europe, UK, South and Central America. She has choreographed work for Lucy Guerin Inc’s Pieces for Small Spaces, Rough Draft and Next Wave Festival. In 2009 Amber performed as a guest artist in the European tour of Garry Stewart’s G. She joined Australian Dance Theatre as a full time member in 2011 and has since toured and performed in Be Your Self, Worldhood, Proximity and G.

Alisdair is a Melbourne-based dancer and choreographer who trained in dance at the Victorian College of the Arts. He has performed extensively throughout Australia and the United States of America as well as performing in Korea and Canada. In 2012-13 he performed in Lucy Guerin Inc’s Untrained and Conversation Piece. Last year he performed with Antony Hamilton and Chunky Move’s Keep Everything, and Gideon Obarzanek and Chunky Move’s Assembly. This year sees him performing and developing new work with Lucy Guerin Inc, Byron Perry,

Talitha Maslin

Talitha graduated from the Western Australian Academy of performing Arts in 2009 receiving the Finley Award for the most improved. In 2010 Talitha undertook her Bachelor of Arts with Link Dance Company, performing nationally and Internationally. Talitha made her professional debut with Lucy Guerin Inc. in 2010 and continues to be engaged as a dancer and collaborator with the company. She played an integral role in launching OCHRE Dance Company in 2011 (formerly The Western Australian Aboriginal Dance Company), worked as assistant choreographer to Alice Lee Holland (Steps Youth Dance Company) and collaborated with independent choreographer Emma Fishwick. In 2013 she performed in Antony Hamilton’s Black Project 2.

Kirstie trained at the Victorian College of the Arts, she has toured nationally and internationally over the past 15 years creating and performing works with Chunky Move (Flesh Meet, Body Parts, Live Acts, Singularity), Lucy Guerin Inc (The Ends of Things, Melt, Plasticine Park, On, Aether, Love Me, Structure and Sadness, Corridor, Weather), Force Majeure (Same, same but different, Already Elsewhere, The Sense of It, The Age I’m In, Never did me any Harm), Byron Perry (Punctuated Equilibrium, Gogglebox, Double Think), Tasdance (Hypermobile), Fiona Cameron (Looking for Life Cure). Nicole Steven (Frame Chaser). She also collaborated with Lisa Griffiths choreographing and performing in two short works for the ‘Studio’ at the Sydney Opera House and has performed in various commercial projects including a Music Video for New Buffalo (It’s True). Kirstie is a multiple award nominee for the Green Room, Helpmann and Australian Dance Awards. She was most recently nominated for a Helpmann award in 2012 for her role in Double Think.

Kyle Page studied dance with Barbara Everson at the Australian Dance Performance, he has since received a Bachelor Degree through AC Arts. In 2005 he was offered a contract with Dancenorth, under the direction of Gavin Webber he performed in Gravity Feed, Night Cafe, Remember Me and Underground.
In 2006 Kyle performed in Underneath, a collaboration between dancenorth/Splinter Group (Australia) and Batik (Japan). He also appeared in the sold out season of Meryl Tankard’s Kaidan at the Sydney Opera House as part of the 2007 Sydney Festival.

Lilian graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts, Bachelor of Dance program in 2009. Since, she has performed with Phillip Adams’ Balletlab in Above (MONA FOMA, 2011), Lucy Guerin Inc in Structure and Sadness (U.S. tour, 2011) and Weather (Premiere, Melbourne Festival, 2012), Company MIJI in Reliquary (2011), and in Rennie McDougall’s SUPERTONE (Next Wave Festival, 2012). In 2012 Lilian created The Call to Connect - Voyager Recordings, a work for Lucy Guerin Inc’s Pieces for Small Spaces, a curated season of short works by emerging artists, and Ballroom Again for Contemporary Site Investigations’ project with Flinders Street Station and City of Melbourne. Lilian was a recipient of the Australia Council for the Arts ArtStart grant, 2011, and in 2013 received a Travel Grant from the Ian Potter Cultural Trust. Lilian was nominated for the 2012 Female Dancer Green Room Award for her work in Rennie McDougall’s SUPERTONE.
