SYMPOSIUM EUROPA SUBTERRANEA 2012 JIHLAVA – CZECH REPUBLIC 25-28th of May 2012

Main Subject: Mining and the Development of the Landscape: The technological-, planning-, social-, economical- and ecological processes, interaction and consequences of ancient mining on the landscape and environment will be discussed. Settlement structures and settlement development will be a subject of discussion as well. Just like the use and influence of forest, water and fields. The emphasis will lie on the development during the hey days of mining and the time after it has resolved. This is illustrated by the examples of large regions at one side and concrete mining enterprises or mining towns at the other. The symposium wants to make a consious effort to establish a comparison between individual historical timeframes without the limitation of chronology. From the flint mining of the Neolithicum to the ore mining of the 17th and 18th centuries. Aspects of this interdisciplinary perception concern technical history, archaeology, ecology, economy, ethnography and social science as a whole.
