HENRI MICHAUX : MOUVEMENTS In 1980, Marie Chouinard discovered the book Mouvements by Henri Michaux (1899-1984). In 64 pages of India-ink drawings, a 15-page poem and an afterword, Mouvements presents multiform figures that Marie Chouinard took pleasure in reading literally, left to right and page by page, as a choreographic score. She then proceeded to decrypt the great artist’s drawings and set dance to these “movements of multiple inkjets, a celebration of blots, arms moving up and down the scales.” The book’s transition to dance has been done “word for word”, for even the poem in the middle of the book, as well as its afterword, are included in the choreography. The drawings are projected in the background, allowing spectators to do a simultaneous personal reading of the Michaux score. Echoing the visual presentation of a white page with black drawings, performers dressed in black dance on a white floor.

En 1980, Marie Chouinard découvre le livre Mouvements, publié en 1951, du poète et peintre Henri Michaux (1899-1984). Composé de 64 pages de dessins à l’encre de Chine, d’un poème de 15 pages et d’une postface, Mouvements donne à voir des figures multiformes que Marie Chouinard s’est plu à lire littéralement, de gauche à droite et de page en page, comme une partition chorégraphique. Elle décide alors de procéder à un décryptage des dessins de cet immense artiste et de faire danser ces « mouvements à jets multiples, fête de taches, gammes de bras ». L’incarnation du livre est réalisée à la lettre puisque même le poème, qui figure en son milieu, sa postface et la première et quatrième de couverture, avec ses dessins inversés, font partie de l’œuvre chorégraphique. Les dessins sont projetés en arrière-plan, donnant ainsi la possibilité aux spectateurs de faire simultanément une lecture personnelle de la partition de Michaux. Faisant écho à la présentation visuelle d’une page blanche avec son dessin noir, les interprètes, vêtus de noir, dansent sur un plancher blanc.

MARIE CHOUINARD and the / et la COMPAGNIE MARIE CHOUINARD In 1978, Marie Chouinard presented her first dance work, Cristallisation, establishing her reputation as a highly original artist driven by the need for authentic communication. This first piece was followed by thirty solos performed on the international stage, including Marie Chien Noir (1982), S.T.A.B. (Space, Time and Beyond) (1986), and Afternoon of a Faun (1987), landmarks in contemporary dance of the past 30 years. In 1990, the soloist and choreographer founded her own company, COMPAGNIE MARIE CHOUINARD. From then on, the COMPAGNIE performs all over the world. In 2007, the COMPAGNIE moved into its own building, Espace Marie Chouinard in Montreal. COMPAGNIE MARIE CHOUINARD coproduces its pieces with different partners such as the Venice Biennale, the ImPulsTanz Dance Festival (Vienna), Théâtre de la Ville (Paris), the Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon), the Fondazione Musica Per Roma (Rome), Festival TransAmériques (Montreal), Place des Arts (Montreal), and the National Arts Centre (Ottawa). Many of the COMPAGNIE’s pieces remain for a long time in its repertoire, such as The Rite Of Spring danced for more than 20 years already. Her pieces can also be found at the repertoire of different ballet companies like The 24 Preludes by Chopin at the National Ballet of Canada, Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun at the São Paulo Companhia de Dança, bODY_rEMIX/les_vARIATIONS_gOLDBERG, Act 1, at the Ballets de Monte-Carlo and the GöteborgsOperan in Sweden. In 2008 her collection of poems entitled Chantier des extases was published by Éditions du passage. In 2011, her photoinstallation Paradisi Gloria is exhibited at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. In 2010, COMPAGNIE_MARIE_ CHOUINARD_COMPANY, a book chronicling two decades of choreography with numerous colour photos, is released. Over the years, Marie has developed her own dance technique, now taught by herself or her dancers during workshops or master classes. In 2011, she created LES PRIX DE LA DANSE DE MONTRÉAL, the best-endowed international dance prize. Named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2007, Marie Chouinard has received several awards including the title of Chevalier in the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (France, 2009), the Denise Pelletier Award (Quebec, 2010), the Grand Prix du Conseil des Arts de Montréal (2006), a Bessie Award (New York, 2000), and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec award for best choreography for LE NOMBRE D’OR (LIVE) (2012).

Guillaume Lord has created sets for theatre, television, the circus (Cirque du Soleil, Cirque Éloize), variety (Arturo Brachetti, Eros Ramazzotti), musical comedy (Don Juan) and dance (Shann Hounsell, Ginette Laurin, Jean Grand-Maître). He has designed sets for works such as Le temps et la chambre (Masque award for sets and the Prix GasconRoux), Art, La Grande Magia, and worked with Lorraine Pintal, Claude Poissant, André Brassard and Serge Denoncourt. Guillaume Lord has also designed exhibits for the Musée du Québec and art directed numerous films and documentaries. THE GOLDEN MEAN (LIVE) is his first work in collaboration with the COMPAGNIE MARIE CHOUINARD.

Il a conçu des scénographies entre autres pour Le temps et la chambre (Masque du décor et prix Gascon-Roux), Art, La Grande Magia, et a travaillé auprès de Lorraine Pintal, Claude Poissant, André Brassard et Serge Denoncourt. Guillaume Lord a également créé le design de nombreuses expositions au Musée du Québec, en plus d’assurer la direction artistique de plusieurs films et documentaires. Après LE NOMBRE D’OR (LIVE) en 2010, GYMNOPÉDIES est sa deuxième collaboration avec la COMPAGNIE MARIE CHOUINARD.

Alain Lortie’s personal style is well known. His colours and above all his great sensitivity to the work of other artists have earned him fruitful collaborations with many big names in song, music, dance and theatre. Self-taught, he is constantly developing on a technical and artistic level and has won a number of awards for his talented work. Alain Lortie is also a consultant and designer for many architectural projects and numerous cultural events and festivals.

Le style personnel d’Alain Lortie est bien connu. Ses couleurs et surtout sa grande sensibilité aux œuvres des autres créateurs lui valent de fructueuses collaborations avec plusieurs grands noms de la chanson, de la musique, de la danse et du théâtre. Autodidacte en constante évolution technique et artistique, il a remporté de nombreux prix soulignant son talent. Lortie est également consultant et concepteur pour de multiples projets architecturaux, événements et festivals culturels.

Liz Vandal began her career in 1990 as a fashion designer, quickly establishing a solid reputation. She is a costume designer, make-up artist and hairstylist, and her work in film, theatre and dance provides opportunities to fully explore her creativity. She has worked with the likes of La La La Human Steps, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal and the Cirque du Soleil. Liz Vandal has designed the costumes for eleven works in COMPAGNIE MARIE CHOUINARD’s repertoire.

Liz Vandal débute sa carrière en 1990 comme designer de mode et impose rapidement sa griffe. Elle développe des concepts de costumes, maquillages et coiffures. Des collaborations avec le monde du cinéma, du théâtre et de la danse lui permettent d’explorer davantage sa créativité. Elle a travaillé, entre autres, avec La La La Human Steps, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal et Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal. Liz Vandal a conçu les costumes de onze œuvres au répertoire de la COMPAGNIE MARIE CHOUINARD.

Louis Dufort was born in Montreal in 1970. Trained as a classical guitarist, he became interested in electroacoustic composition and completed his master’s degree at the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal. His musical compositions have resulted in several international awards. A regular contributor to COMPAGNIE MARIE CHOUINARD since 1996, he is a member of the artistic committee of the Quebec Association for electroacoustic composition and research (ACREQ).

Compositeur montréalais, Louis Dufort a d’abord développé son style par la voie de l’électroacoustique, puis s’est rapidement ouvert aux musiques mixte et multimédia. Il a collaboré entre autres avec la Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ), l’Ensemble contemporain de Montréal (ECM), l’Association pour la création et la recherche électroacoustiques du Québec (ACREQ) et Chants libres. Ses créations lui ont valu plusieurs prix internationaux. Collaborateur régulier de la COMPAGNIE MARIE CHOUINARD depuis 1996, Louis Dufort siège sur les comités artistiques du festival Élektra et de la SMCQ, en plus d’enseigner au Conservatoire de musique de Montréal.
