Born in Marseille, Muriel Bérard starts her piano classes at the conservatory of this town (CNR) and obtains a diploma with the highest mark possible, with special honours by the jury. At the age of fourteen, she is accepted at the National Conservatory of Music in Paris (CNSM) in the class of Jacques Rouvier. Parallel she continues the French High School by correspondence and graduates in 1993 (Baccalauréat) with the highest mark. At the National Conservatory of Paris she finishes her soloist studies with a First Prize as well as with a diploma in musical studies (highest mark) in 1995. During her soloist studies she also becomes interested in chamber music and enters the class of Laszlo Hadady and Michel Moraguès with her own piano trio with which she obtains a First Prize in chamber music. A scholarship of the French government (Bourse Lavoisier) gives her the possibility to continue her piano studies at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow. In April 1997 she is one of the prize winners of the international piano competition „Maria Canals“ in Barcelona. She has participated in Master classes of distinguished pianists, such as Murray Perahia, Vera Gornostaeva and Nikita Magaloff. Muriel Bérard has appeared as a soloist with the orchestra Musica Viva Moscow, conducted by Evgueni Bushkov, and with the World Youth Orchestra. She has performed numerous recitals as a soloist and with chamber music in Russia, in the Ukraine, in Spain, in Switzerland and in various French cities, such as Marseille, at the festival of Antibes and at the international festival of Luxeuil-les-bains. In Paris she has performed, among others, in the Atrium Magne and the Salle Cortot, and besides also in Clermont-Ferrand and at the festival of Chateau Borély in Marseille. She has been a piano teacher at the Salle Pleyel music school in Paris.

Since May 2000 Muriel Bérard has increasingly been working with singers; she was invited by Jocelyne Dienst, at that time artistic director of the CNIPAL in Marseille, to work as a coach in this opera academy. Beside her soloist career, she then works intensively with the singers of the CNIPAL, in close cooperation with artistic personalities such as Yvonne Minton, Mady Mesplé, Viorica Cortez, Janet Aster, Bernard Brocca and Daniel Mesguich. Regularly she accompanies opera recitals at the operas of Marseille and Avignon. Furthermore she helps young professional singers as for example Gaëlle Méchaly, Chantal Perraut and Stéphane Degoult to study new roles such as Violetta, Don Giovanni, Adina, Adele… In summer 2003 she accompanies in Mexico the soprano Rosa Elvira Sierra Santos in a program of Latino American composers (Villa-Lobos, Ginastera, Moreno), produced as a CD after a number of recitals. In December 2002 she is coach of the production of “Viva la Mamma” by Donizetti at the opera of Caen. In November 2003 she works in the same position at the National Opera of Montpellier, coaching the production “Pique Dame” by Tchaikovsky, conducted by Friedemann Layer. In the same month, she is the soloist in the “Burlesque” for piano and orchestra by Richard Strauss, with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Nice conducted by Christian von Gehren. In July 2004 Muriel Bérard will be coach at the festival of Radio France and will prepare the opera “Salomé” by Mariotte, again conducted by Friedemann Layer. Muriel Bérard speaks, beside her mother tongue French, fluently Russian, German and English. She also has the necessary knowledge of Italian to work the Italian opera repertoire.
