A. COMPANY PROFILE Since 2003, NetControl has been a provider of leading-edge technology for the passenger transportation industry in E-ticketing, embedded computing, GPRS transmission, online ticket sales for buses and coaches, as well as point of sale vending and access control systems. NetControl, based in Paris France, has a team of international and multilingual project leaders and technical experts capable of providing its services and solutions in several different languages across the globe. NetControl was the first company in France to have equipped a large bus fleet with a complete onboard bus electronic ticketing system. This system, called NetCase, combined a touchscreen PC with easy to use onboard ticketing software that provided an integrated robust solution. This architectural basis of this system is still in use today by one of NetControl’s clients: OpenTour / Visual.
Today, a large number of buses owned by
OpenTour, Transdev, and other passenger transportation companies are equipped with NetControl’s solutions. The onboard WAN 3G connects the NetCase to the NetControl servers via high-speed data connectivity over standard cellular networks. Once connected, the NetCase facilitates onboard ticket sales, card payments using payment terminals, the collection of prepaid tickets and vouchers, and the validation of electronic tickets identified by a reservation code (the tickets are validated using a 2D barcode scanner). NetControl’s high-speed mobile connection, with WAN 3G facilitates a rapid, regular and practically guaranteed data transfer. Ticket validation by the server and the transfer of card payment details are carried out in real time, which greatly reduces the time it takes for passengers to board the buses. In addition, the improved data transfer for ticket validation enables our clients to protect their system from all types of fraud. NetControl’s WAN 3G enables data transfer for the complete vehicle fleet management with constant connection to the till for sales analysis and validation. It also allows fleet movements to be analyzed in real time by means of data transfer, which provides a record of each vehicle’s trips. NetControl’s provision of an on-board computerized ticketing system for buses has become a benchmark for quality and operations in the field, with improved fleet security, combating fraud, and faster passenger boarding. NetControl will select the modules that best suit the context. There are 4 main parts: 1) 2) 3) 4)
The sales process The contactless card management The controls onboard the bus / passenger counting The GPS tracking
1) The sales process For Miviltech Soluciones Industriales’s project, the sales process is as follows: a) Onboard Sales The customer goes directly to the vehicle. He buys a ticket using cash, credit card or his personal contactless card. If he uses the contactless card, his account’s credit is debited. He obtains a ticket with a 2D barcode for later controls.
b) On the ground sales The customer goes directly to a sales counter. He buys a ticket using cash, credit card or his personal contactless card. If he uses the contactless card, his account’s credit is debited. He obtains a ticket with a 2D barcode for access to the vehicle and later controls. Below is illustrated the sale process

2) The contactless card management Contactless cards are electronic cards that allow quick transactions by using contactless technology such as RFID in order to remove the need to insert or swipe a card. These cards can be printed and loaded directly by a bus company agent. Customers can buy a contactless card from their bus company and put credit on it in order to use it on the bus as a mean of payment, instead of having to carry cash around. The card can be issued in the bus company’s offices, at counters, etc.. It is up the company to choose the way of selling the cards. The user can go online to top up (reload) his account when he has used all of his credit. He can also go to any counter and do the same. The process is described below:
Customer with cash or credit card Bus company Counter/ Sales counter
Contactless card BUS
3) Controls aboard the bus / Passenger counting In order to check for passenger and driver fraud, bus companies must execute random controls of the passengers on the bus. They must check that every customer aboard the bus has paid his fare through the ticketing system. The controller is equipped with a PDA and scans the passengers’ ticket to check their validity. For the passenger counting, a system using cameras can be placed above all the bus doors.

NetPOS: Ticket Sale NetPOS can be installed on different hardware type (PC, Pocket PC, Tablet PC, etc.). It ensures the sale of products in many environments. Its simple interface and easy to use controls all operations related to sales and reservations, whatever the conditions of sales. This application allows you to: • Generate sales • Generate reservations • Use discounts and vouchers • Scanning electronic tickets • Scan and debit contactless card
In terms of hardware, NetControl has retained 2 solutions for each of the 2 points of sale. In each case, the system requires an internet connection. Buses use 3G connections and on the ground points of sale can use DSL or 3G. NetControl’s system includes the hardware for this connectivity but NetControl doesn’t provide the data Sim card or DSL subscription outside of France. The client must contact its local provider in order to obtain the 3G/Data Sim cards and DSL access.

1) NetPOS: Bus Aboard the bus, the driver can sell tickets, scan electronic tickets, scan contactless card. There are 2 kinds of equipment that are suitable for buses: a) Fix installation For this solution, a panel PC is fixed to the bus with its different peripherals. That solution cannot be removed quickly and becomes part of the bus. Pros:
More resistant installation
A lot more difficult to steal
Need to alter the vehicle
Need to pass cables
Less easy maintenance
If the power supply from the bus is not working properly it will impact
Cons:
the system
Many peripherals outside the Panel PC, so more equipment to maintain and more chance of failure

b) Mobile installation For this solution, a Tablet PC is attached to a support on the bus. A tablet PC is like a laptop with no keyboard. This means it is completely autonomous and can function on batteries. Pros:
No need to modify the bus for installation
Maintenance is made much easier as the user can simply exchange the equipment if it’s not working
Works on batteries if need to be used outside the bus, or in case of faulty wiring in bus no impact on the equipment
Driver can’t disable the system by trying to cut power source
Less peripherals as most are integrated in the tablet, easier to maintain and less chance of failure
Very robust manufacture
Easier to steal, but anti-theft systems can be used
Cons:
This is the solution NetControl recommends as it is very easy to deploy and maintain, and batteries provide a form of protection that the first solution doesn’t have.

b) Mobile installation For this solution, the same Tablet PC like on a bus is used. It can be put on a stand on a table for more practicability Pros:
Maintenance is made much easier as the user can simply exchange the equipment if it’s not working
Works on batteries if failure of power source
Less peripherals as most are integrated in the tablet, easier to maintain and less chance of failure
Very robust manufacture
If this equipment is chosen for the bus, the maintenance is simplified as there is only one type of equipment regardless of the location (bus or ground)
Cons:
Easier to steal, but anti-theft systems can be used
This is the solution NetControl recommends as it is very easy to deploy and maintain, and batteries provide a form of protection that the first solution doesn’t have. If buses have the same equipment, there is only one type of equipment to maintain.

NetLoc: Fleet Management
NetControl provides a real time vehicle fleet management system which allow to monitor buses on a local map. With this system, a regulator can visualize all buses on a zoomable map of Ecuador in real time and send messages to bus drivers to alert them about a problem or to check some issues. Bus drivers can also send messages to the regulators, which are displayed on the map with a
visual
and
audible
signal,
and
can
be
validated
by
the
regulators.
To ensure the safety of drivers, an alarm pedal can be installed on buses. When the driver presses the pedal, an alarm signal is automatically sent to the regulators who can act accordingly. A recording system is also provided, so that regulators can replay the bus route afterwards.

NetWatch: Passenger Control & Verbalization In order to prevent fraud, Miviltech Soluciones Industriales
is looking for a passenger
counting system NetCcontrol proposes two different solutions. The first is an on board counting system using a camera, which has a success rate above 98%. This solution has to be installed above each door of the bus, taking the passengers up and down. The number of passengers can be checked on the back office, where it can be compared with sales number. Considering the high cost of such a solution, NetControl provides an alternative way which consists of a control and verbalization system. Independent controllers can be equipped with a Pocket PC and regularly check passenger’s tickets on buses. With a Pocket PC, the controller can check the validity of tickets and contactless cards. In case the ticket or contactless cards are outdated, or passenger doesn't have one, the controller can issue a fine. In case the ticket or contactless cards are false, the controller can ask for the origin of the fake to determine responsibilities (driver, company, street counterfeit,) The advantage of such a solution is that a small group of controllers can control a large amount of buses in a day, without having to equip each bus. Controls being random, drivers and passengers do not take the risk of getting caught. This solution has been chosen by large companies in France.
