I.

OVERVIEW "Silk Roads" is an association registered under French law which aims at organising in both countries a two-week exchange every year between twenty Chinese students and the same number of French students. It is organised by students for students. The exchange is held alternatively in France and in China every year. The first exchange took place on February 2005 in France, while the return exchange happened in October 2005 in China. The Chinese students involved in this program have been selected among students from the best Chinese Universities, located in Beijing, Shanghai and Nanjing. These universities are partners of ParisTech, and the French students belong to engineering schools from this network, including the Ecole Polytechnique, the Ecole des Mines de Paris, the Ecole des Ponts et Chaussées and Télécom Paris, and since this year, the Ecole Nationale des Arts et Métiers.

PROGRAM

The goal of the exchanges in France and China is to enable students to discover both industrial worlds, focusing on companies, industrial cooperation and running or future partnerships. The main aim of “Silk Roads” is the realisation of a market research or technical report in partnership with each of the sponsoring companies. This report is realised by a bicultural team, regrouping 3 students of each nationality, supervised by a tutor in the sponsoring company and another one found in the universities taking part in Silk Roads. The purpose of these studies is to bring some external support and expertise to companies on important issues regarding their Sino French opportunities, while enabling these sponsoring companies to test “in real life” the students working on the study in a recruiting perspective. The results of the research will lead to a presentation within the companies. A final report will be written presenting the conclusions of the study. Besides these studies, visits of sponsoring companies willing to present their activities will be held for all participants. Three workshops about Sino French industrial themes will be organised within the universities taking part in the program to present some achievements in this field. These workshops will gather lecturers from universities as well as from the corporate world. Finally some cultural events such as visits to museums will be organised in order to get to know each other’s culture and improve the communication and the working atmosphere amongst the participants.

PARTNERSHIP

For more than a decade, China has benefited from over 8% growth rate and already represents a huge market for foreign companies willing to position themselves for the future. Nevertheless, more opportunities are bound to open up with the development of the country. Excellent staff is needed to face these challenges.

Today's “Silk Roads” students might become high potential partners tomorrow, able to bridge the gap between France and China. They are a human resource readily available to achieve your targets involving Chinese and western worlds. The French students of “Silk Roads” have a passion for China and its culture, and are keen to pursue a career linked to that country. They are all eager to work for companies where you can meet the Chinese challenge. Supporting us is a unique occasion to secure the loyalty of future high-profile engineers, who are familiar with Chinese issues and culture. We know Chinese students are hard to recruit for western companies. Therefore, one of our goals is to bring these students to your company, hopefully creating a long term relationship, ideally leading to an internship or recruitment. The Chinese students taking part in “Silk Roads” are all highly skilled with an outstanding background. They are ready to support the development of your company in China. They may become your future partners, a network of high potential in China.

We offer you the chance of making your company better known among the students from the Chinese universities by coming to our campuses to talk about your activities. The participants of “Silk Roads” will write up a report with your help on a topic relevant to your company, involving China and the western world. This study which will last eight months is a great opportunity for you to increase you popularity within the participants. Moreover, we would like to invite you to join the workshops organised in our universities to talk about your experience in industrial cooperation between China and the western world. Finally, you will have the opportunity to come to our universities and talk about your activities, both in China and in France. You will therefore be able to communicate widely, potentially reaching all the students in our universities.

The commitment of our last year’s partners lead to the recruitment of Chinese students and many internships.

FUNDING

As “Silk Roads” is industry-oriented, the program will be mainly financed by industrial sponsors, to encourage students taking part in the program to establish contacts with companies. The organising party in France is responsible for accommodation in France and for the activities scheduled, whereas the organising party in China will be responsible to the same extent for the return exchange in China.
