EUROCAMPUS – TWO SCHOOLS UNDER ONE ROOF

The pedagogical co-operation between German and French School As to common lessons in cycle II and III, the teachers for each discipline are the following: - Vera Kesten: music lesson - Lisa Burun: arts lesson - Marina Jurjević: sports lesson Each teacher has 4 common lessons a week (45 minutes for the music lesson and 1h30 for sports and for arts). The pupils of cycle II (Mr. Forissier’s class) have no common arts lesson with Mrs. Burun because their timetable did not fit with the teacher’s one. Instead, the arts lesson is held by Mr. Forissier himself.

Mrs. Pohler and Mr. Rouchon have come to an agreement concerning the German and French language lessons held in cycle III of both schools: On Fridays, Mrs. Pohler has German (45 minutes) with the pupils of CM1 and CM2 during the music lesson of CE2. Mr. Rouchon teaches French to the German pupils of « Klasse 4 » for 45 minutes per week. As to the common sports activity of the German and the French kindergarten groups, the following planning has been fixed: The children of both kindergartens come together for a common sports activity

every Friday morning between 9h and 9h45. There are two different groups: The first group comprises Mrs. Denis’s class and the children of the German Vorschule with Annette, their teacher (a total of 28 children). The second group is made up of Mrs. Čačija’s group and Maja’s children of the German kindergarten. The organisation of this common activity is nearly the same for both groups. The teachers prepare the lesson, one week the French teacher and the German teacher the other week. The teachers speak in their mother tongue to the children, i.e. Annette speaks German, Veronique speaks French. If some translation is needed from German into French, Veronique asks sometimes the bilingual children of her group to do the translation, or Annette does the translation into English and Veronique translates then into French. This works very well because the instructions given to kindergarten children are generally quite short and precise. The contents of this common sports activity is very similar to what the French kindergarten usually does during its sports lesson. At the beginning of the school year, the accent was put on games in order to get to know each other more easily. Besides, the children of the French kindergarten have shown and taught some of their dances to their German fellows. In general, the children appreciate very much this common activity despite of some occasional linguistic difficulties. However, it is important to know that the objective of this common activity is not so much to learn a new language, but rather to

know each other better and to learn to live together under one roof. The children learn something about a different culture and get more sensitive to the other language spoken at the EuroCampus. __________________________________

In addition to the newsletter of the French school, which is distributed about every two months, the EuroCommittee decided to put up another newsletter, i.e. a common EuroCampus newsletter. It is written by Mrs. Kainz and comes out in French and Croatian language every three months. __________________________________

The teaching of the Croatian language There are three different types of Croatian teaching at the French school: -

Lessons of Croatian as a foreign language taught to non-Croatian pupils: these lessons are held at all levels (from kindergarten to cycle III) except for the collège. - Lessons of Croatian language for Croatian pupils: for the moment, these lessons exist only in the kindergarten. However, the school administration has been reconsidering the possibility of putting up this kind of lessons for cycle II and III, too. - The lessons of Croatian History and Geography for Croatian pupils become obligatory to the pupils of class 6 of the collège. __________________________________

Reminder: the use of the parking lot For security reasons, the school gate of the small parking lot next to the school entrance will be opened to the parents in the morning only between 8h15 and 9h00, and again in the afternoon between 15h15 and 17h30. For the rest of the time, this parking lot is reserved for the pupils during their recreation time. __________________________________ Visit of the AEFE and the ZfA On December 6th and 7th, we had a new visit of the AEFE (Agency for French Teaching Abroad) and its German homologue, the ZfA. Mrs. Perrier of the AEFE and Mr. Janssen of the ZfA seemed to be satisfied with the progress made by the German and French schools, especially for the EuroCampus co-operation. A great part of the objectives defined during their last common visit in spring has been achieved, such as the creation of the EuroCommittee or the organisation of German and French lessons in cycle III. There is still a lot to do for the EuroCampus project, but we are on the right way. __________________________________

EuroCampus meeting: On Thursday 15th November, 2007, there was a EuroCampus evening organized at the German Ambassador’s residence, Mr. Hans Jochen Peters. At this occasion, the members of the German and French executive committees, the teachers and the school staff of both schools as well as all the people dealing with the EuroCampus project could get to know each other and talk about the common activities of both schools. __________________________________

offer sufficient space for a good teaching atmosphere. A second blackboard and a door between the two rooms have been installed. As to the computers (a total of 6 machines), a large part of them was very old and did not fit any more the needs of the teaching programme. It has been decided to keep only the best ones (1 computer for each grade) and to give away the rest. __________________________________

Wooden boards: As you already noticed, a large number of wooden boards have been fixed on the walls of 1st floor and ground floor so as to allow the pupils to exhibit their paintings and other arts work. __________________________________ Inspection of the Éducation Nationale: On Tuesday 27th November, Mr. Thierry HOUYEL, Inspector of the Éducation Nationale for the South-Eastern zone of Europe paid a visit to the French School of Zagreb. A pedagogical inspection in the morning has been followed up by a pedagogical workshop for the teaching staff in the afternoon. Mr. Houyel also met Mrs. Marcotte, the chairwoman of the managing association. The inspector said to be satisfied with the results of his visit and the good management of the school. As far as the Franco-German co-operation is concerned, he thinks that a great deal has been done to put up a dynamic pedagogical exchange between the two schools. In order to continue on this way, Mr. Houyel suggests the creation of some kind of « cultural course » for parents of both schools, thus installing an intercultural dialogue on common subjects of education,

Information paper An information paper of the French school has been handed out to the parents. Please, make sure that your address and phone numbers are correct. __________________________________ The separation of the two CNED classes As the rent of another school room on 2nd floor turned out to be too expensive in comparison to the small number of pupils, the school direction and the parents agreed to continue to use the actual school room on 1st floor and to make two different rooms out of one by installing a partition. As there are only three pupils for each grade, these two rooms are large enough to
