Context The population of Liberia is estimated around 4.102 million people in 2010 [FAOSTAT] . The total area of the country is 111 370 km2 with around 4.329 million hectares of forests in 2010 [FAO, 2010].
Introduction Main Non-Wood Forest Products Only limited information is available on the utilization of non-wood forest products (NWFP) in Liberia. Edible animal and plant products such as bushmeat, mushrooms, fruits, beverages, honey and snails are supposed to be the most important non-wood forest products (NWFP) in Liberia. Other NWFP are medicines (Alchornea cordifolia, Xylopia staudtti, Hugaruna and Piptadeniastrum africanum), colorants, bamboo and rattan cane (Calamus deeratus, Raphia palma-pinus) used for furniture construction.

Bush meat
Bushmeat is the major source of protein and an important income generating activity for the bulk of the Liberian people, especially for rural dwellers. According to Anstey [Anstey, 1991], the profit margin of an urban market woman was between $US120-200 per month. Wildlife resources contribute to 60-90 percent to the consumption of animal proteins throughout the country and a survey in urban areas found that around 95% of the population consume bushmeat. Annual production of bushmeat for subsistence and commercial purposes is estimated to reach 105 000 t [Ntiamoa-Baidu, 1997]. Most popular species are small antelopes and monkeys but Anstey [Anstey, 1991] recorded 35 species for sale in markets throughout Liberia. There is a noticeable demand and consumption of bushmeat in the country, which have resulted to indiscriminate killings of animal species. Currently, commercial hunting is leading to extinction of many of the endemic species, which has resulted in import of bushmeat from Sierra Leone and Guinea [FAO and Falconer, 1990; FDA, b].
