Unit2, step3 Task : I learn how to speak about what I had or I didn’t have to do.

Obligation in the past I-I observe and I understand Look at the illustration and guess what happened. Lilly and her mother were in the living room when suddenly the light went out! Lilly tried to switch on the light, but in vain. Her mother tried to turn the computer on, but she couldn’t. They were all in the dark. So what did they have to do then? Lilly and her mother had to light candles.

II-I learn my lesson In order to express OBLIGATION in the PAST, I use HAD TO + VERB BASE. When I was little I had to go to bed very early. In order to express THE ABSENCE OF OBLIGATION, I use DIDN’T HAVE TO + VB My parents didn’t have to wear a uniform at school In the interrogative form: (question word) + did + subject + have to + VB?

III- I show I know a) Oral comprehension Lilly and Matt are talking about what happened last weekend at Lilly’s house. There was a power cut so they had to light a lot of candles and make a fire in the fireplace because they were cold. They couldn’t cook dinner, so they had to eat cold food, but they didn’t have to do the washing up. b) Writing Last weekend my aunt asked me to babysit her son. It was a new experience for me. First I had to prepare his meal and read him a story before I put him in his bed for a nap. Then I had to take him to the park and change his nappies but I didn’t have to clean up and I didn’t have to do the washing up. Vocabulary: Power cut, candles, cold food, fireplace, nappies, nap To light, the lights go out, to wash up, to make a fire
