ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the quality of colonoscopies by estimating polypectomy rates in screening and non-screening colonoscopies. Methods: Endoscopist and their patients at 7 Montreal hospitals participated. Indication for colonoscopy was derived from patient and endoscopist questionnaires. Polypectomy status was extracted from provincial physician billing records. Bayesian hierarchical logistic regression was used to estimate polypectomy rates while accounting for physician level clustering. Results: 2134 patients and 45 endoscopists were included. Polypectomy rate was 25.7% [95% CI: 19.8, 32.1] in screening and 27.5% [95% CI: 21.5, 33.9] in non-screening colonoscopies. Sensitivity analysis using multiple definitions of screening suggests that results were robust to the way in which screening was defined. Conclusion: Compared to the quality benchmarks, these findings suggest that polypectomy rates fall below recommended targets.
