Early Stage Researcher Marie Curie FP7 AeroTraNet 2 (Aircraft engine noise and land-based engine design for power): one 3-year-fixed-term MC Fellowship in ‘Jet rig development and acoustic measurements’ Participant 7, CNR-INSEAN   The AeroTraNet2 Programme is a new Aeronautical Training Network to train Early Stage Researchers (ESR) and Experienced Researchers ( E R ) in front-line, integrated, industry relevant research in unsteady aerodynamics and noise for the next generation of environmentally friendly wide-body civil aircraft. Building upon the multi-host EST FP6 programme AeroTraNet (http://aerotranet.imft.fr/), AeroTraNet 2 clusters the complementary expertise of 5 established European academic institutes, 2 EU multi-national companies, 1 SME, and one national research centre to offer structured, flexible, well-integrated, a la carte, doctoral and postdoctoral training programmes for the new generation of EU aerodynamics and noise specialists. Six academic partners address the common objective of modelling shock cell noise in a wide-body aircraft engine configuration from private sector partner Airbus France, by shock-tolerant numerical modelling for under-expanded jets (University of Leicester), large eddy simulations for turbulent jets with weak shocks (Cerfacs), advanced flownoise correlations (Università degli Studi Roma Tre), jet and near-field noise experiments (VKI), reduced-order modelling and flow control (IMFT-INP), and advanced laser-based measurement techniques (INSEAN). Knowledge output is synthesized through a dedicated knowledge capturing programme by UoG (University of Greenwich), which is used by private sector partner Alstom UK. In AeroTraNet 2, the research output becomes itself object of knowledge management research, which is a novel supra-disciplinary element. By combining their well-established doctoral training schools and graduate training programmes, the academic and industrial partners will train a well-integrated team of 9 ESR and 3 ER who have learnt to combine their different research techniques to push forward the state of the art of shock cell noise prediction applied to aircraft design. This is a significant progress in structuring the European research training capacity in aerodynamics, noise, and knowledge capturing, for EU's knowledge based economy.   The fellowship is open to applicants graduated with a first class or 2.1 MSc/BSc degree or its equivalent in the discipline of Mechanical and/or Aeronautical Engineering, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or Mathematics with Engineering. In addition, the applicant has to satisfy the ESR eligibility criteria stated in Section III.3.2 (a) and (b) of ftp://ftp.cordis.europa.eu/pub/fp7/docs/fp7-mga-annex3intramulti_en.pdf. A good knowledge of English is required should the applicant’s first language not be English. The work concerns the development of a low cost jet test rig in a laser enclosure, suitable for deploying optical techniques (e.g. LDV, standard and volumetric PIV) and pressure measurements. The test rig, intended to operate in blow-down mode, should be suitably designed to either optimize the steady flow condition as long as required for data acquisition and to develop an aerodynamically and acoustically quiet outflow. A detailed acoustic and hydrodynamic qualification of the facility is intended to be performed through advanced detailed flow measurements techniques and pressure fluctuation measurements. The successful applicant will be hosted at CNR-INSEAN in Rome. Annual gross salary is at the EU Marie Curie ESR rate (a Monthly Living Allowance, including all compulsory deductions under Italian legislation, of 40508,00 €/year, plus a contribution to the mobility costs of up to12792,00 €/year).   An official Call for Application will published soon (beginning 2013). Interested qualified candidates are invited to send an up-to-date cv, research motivation, and transcript of studies in a single pdf file, with names and contacts of two referees, to Dr. Mario FELLI at [email protected].   The recruited researcher will have the opportunity to access to the Roma Tre three years Doctoral programme in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (Call for Applications around July 2013, start 1st of January 2014).
