Dear Grant Committee:

June 21, 2012

As a third-year undergraduate student with a strong interest in Israeli-Palestinian affairs and conflict resolution, I am applying for a Colorado State University travel grant to cover the expenses of an unpaid internship in Jerusalem this summer. I have recently been offered a position with Project Harmony, a summer camp for Arab and Jewish youth. Project Harmony works with the “Hand-in-Hand” integrated schools project in Jerusalem and is strongly focused on developing a sense of coexistence and tolerance in the community. Working for Project Harmony would not only give me insight into the complex structures of the international nonprofit world, but would also allow me to expand my knowledge of conflict management. Because Project Harmony is a new organization, I feel I will gain formative first-hand experience with a nongovernmental organization and truly contribute to the expansion of the program. My current studies at Colorado State focus on social and educational initiatives as a method for confronting many of the problems in the region. Working with Project Harmony will undoubtedly strengthen my future coursework at the university by giving me a unique approach to relevant issues. Furthermore, this internship will provide a sound foundation upon which I may build a career. I spent last summer studying in Amman, Jordan, funded by a Critical Language Scholarship, and being back in the region on Colorado State’s study abroad program has been a phenomenal experience. My Arabic continues to improve and I am also picking up a bit of Hebrew which I plan to continue studying at the university next fall. All of these experiences have strengthened my ability to work confidently and communicate with people from diverse backgrounds, and I hope to continue working in the region after I graduate. Unfortunately, my time in Jerusalem has taken me away from my job in Fort Collins, so I must find outside funding for the summer months. Without a grant it will be difficult for me to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity with Project Harmony and I am therefore grateful for any funds you may be able to provide. Thank you for your consideration, I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Jane (Last Name)
