I am fascinated by human ineptitude. I rarely see the world in terms of good and evil, right or wrong; I think most people strive to do the right thing. That the “right thing” is so often wrong is uncanny, sometimes tragic, and often very, very funny. My favorite stories arise from good-butflawed characters trying desperately to do what each believes is best for a given situation – and the situation keeps getting worse. The characters don’t find any of this funny; we as the audience laugh out of recognition – in their boat, we might do (and perhaps have done) worse. What interests me is our capacity to see this, yet make those same mistakes regardless. It is funny that a species so capable – our biology outpaces our circumstances such that the vast majority of us are physically and intellectually far more agile than our daily work requires – is so lost when it comes to emotions, to relationships with one another. On the chain of evolution, from fish to ape to us, we are the geek with glasses who can’t ask out the girl. Prior species were wiped out from famine and disease; we might be the first to be felled by poor self-esteem. There is a moment in SAVING FACE when the daughter sees her mother’s vulnerability for the first time. The mother has staunchly refused to go on the blind date her daughter has procured. The daughter responds by trying to railroad the mother into getting ready; she is certain the situation can be fixed by getting Mom into the right dress, the right hair. The more the daughter tries to fix things, the worse it gets. What her mother secretly wants is reassurance: she’s scared. The situation is comic. Does the daughter care? Yes. Is she trying to do the right thing? Certainly. Does it work? No. It is only when she throws up her hands and surrenders, does the truth come out. And with it, the connection both women have been subconsciously seeking. I wrote SAVING FACE as a love-letter to my mother. The character of Ma begins the movie as a woman with all major decisions in life seemingly made; at 48, she has lived a proper life and is now essentially just living to die. That she ultimately breaks with tradition and lives on her own terms is a triumph I wanted my mother – and the world – to see. I suppose if there is one thing I am trying to say with the film, it is that no matter who you are – Asian or black, gay or straight, young or old – that everyone basically wants to love – and that opportunity can start at any point in your life that you want it to. I made SAVING FACE because I wanted my mother to know that it was never too late to fall in love for the first time. And that it is not by doing things right, but by sometimes getting them wrong, that we launch the journey that allows us to come into our own. - Alice Wu

Synopsis

For 28-year old New Yorker Wilhelmina "Wil" Pang (Michelle Krusiec), life is a juggling act between a promising career as a surgeon and her responsibilities as a dutiful daughter. Like the #7 train she takes to visit her Chinese family on a weekly basis, Wil is perpetually in transit between two worlds. The expectations of the Flushing, Queens society she is from and the desires that alienate her from it have made Wil content to live below the surface -- even if it means playing an inadvertent game of charades with her widowed mother (Joan Chen) and the old world Ma represents. The masquerade is comic even in its pain as Wil tolerates Ma's weekly set ups with eligible Chinese-American boys at the Friday Chinese socials; but it quickly becomes a farce when Ma's mask cracks first. One night, Wil comes home to find Ma on her doorstep - pregnant. Disgraced by the Chinese community, and with no where else to go, Ma moves in with her daughter, making it difficult for Wil to nurture a budding relationship with gorgeous dancer Vivian (Lynn Chen). As her carefully compartmentalized worlds collide, Wil is forced to find her mother a husband, placate her girlfriend, and choose between breaking a cycle of keeping up appearances, or risk losing the girl she loves. SAVING FACE is a romantic comedy about a daughter struggling to understand her mother's heart, which ultimately allows her to understand her own. It is the story of unspoken loves, contemporary and cultural taboos, and the journey of two women towards living their lives honestly.

About the Cast JOAN CHEN (“Ma”) Joan Chen was born in Shanghai, China. She was selected for the Actors’ Training Program by the Shanghai Film Studio in 1975. Joan’s first starring role was in the movie YOUTH directed by the famous veteran director Xie Jin. Her second film LITTLE FLOWER won her the Best Actress Award in China in 1980. She became the cinematic darling of her native country and was dubbed the “Elizabeth Taylor of China.” Joan left China for America in 1981 to study filmmaking, and graduated with honors from California State University, Northridge. She began her U.S. acting career in 1985, where she played leading roles in TAIPAN, the Academy Award winning THE LAST EMPEROR, BLOOD OF HEROES, TURTLE BEACH, GOLDEN GATE and HEAVEN AND EARTH. She also starred as the enigmatic Josie Packard in the highly regarded David Lynch series TWIN PEAKS. In 1993 she returned to her hometown of Shanghai and starred in Stanley Kwan’s RED ROSE, WHITE ROSE. Her role as the sultry Red Rose later won her the Best Actress Award in Taiwan and the Film Critics Award in Hong Kong. In 1997 Joan made her directorial debut with the critically acclaimed film XIU XIU, THE SENT DOWN GIRL. The film was released internationally in May of 1999 and has received numerous awards. In 2000, Joan was honored with the National Board of Review’s “International Freedom of Expression” award. Joan’s second effort behind the camera was MGM’s AUTUMN IN NEW YORK starring Richard Gere and Winona Ryder. She is set to star in the upcoming JASMINE with co-star Ziyi Zhang. She completed additional studies at the University of Oxford, and then went on to host two seasons of Travelers for the Discovery Channel, which took her to almost fifty destinations around the world. Within several months of completing Travelers, Michelle was cast as a series regular on NBC’s Saturday morning series One World in which she played the sporty yet sometimes "spacey" Sui Blake. Since then, Krusiec has left an indelible mark playing an incredibly diverse range of roles with both recurring and starring roles on such hit shows as Cold Case, Without a Trace, Monk and E.R. As the recurring character, "Sachiko," on HBO's dark comedy The Mind of the Married Man, televised worldwide, Krusiec permanently introduced into the American lexicon, the now infamous term "Happy Ending." Krusiec's other film credits include, SWEET HOME ALABAMA,DADDY DAY CARE, DUPLEX, PUMPKIN (2002 Sundance), and CURSED. Well versed as a stage actress, Made in Taiwan, is Michelle's autobiographic depiction of living under the regime of an oppressive and ridiculously intense...Mom. After an arduous development process at the highly respected Larry Moss studio, this original one woman show premiered to sold out houses and standing ovations at the prestigious HBO U.S. Comedy Arts Festival. Two years later, she was singing on the same stage as a member of the Met’s Children’s Chorus. She worked steadily between The Metropolitan and NYC Opera House for three years, during which she landed the role of “Ngana” in the Broadway revival of “South Pacific.” She decided to put off performing and focus on her education, attending Wesleyan University in CT. She couldn’t stay away for long, however. After a few years working as a waitress, a teacher, and an administrative assistant, she decided to pursue a professional acting career. Lynn has appeared in commercials and promos for Disneyworld, MTV, and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. On television, she has appeared in guest spots on NBC’s “Law & Order,” “Law & Order: SVU,” and in the recurring role of pre-med student “Regina” on ABC’s “All My Children.” She has also done voice-over work for the Olympics and Coca-Cola. Lynn is also a musician, having studied classical piano since the age of seven. Between acting jobs, she is busy writing and recording music, for solo projects, and with her band, YPOK2. ALICE WU (Writer/Director) Alice Wu was born and raised in San Jose, California and is now based in New York City. She received her bachelor's and master's degrees in computer science at Stanford University. She directed the short film TRICK OR TREAT (2002) before her first feature, SAVING FACE (2004).
