ECETOC was established in 1978 as an autonomous organisation, to provide a scientific forum through which specialised expertise within the European chemical industry could be harnessed to research, review, assess and publish studies on the ecotoxicology and toxicology of chemicals. On the occasion of its 25th Anniversary, ECETOC will be recognising the achievements of three promising European investigators in the fields of science relevant to its mission of supporting the safe manufacturing and use of chemicals, pharmaceuticals and biomaterials through sound science. The awards There will be three prizes of €10,000 awarded. One for each of the following areas: Occupational Health (including exposure assessment) Health assessment Environmental fate and effects In addition to recognising promising young investigators and their achievements, the aim of the awards is to promote collaboration between research teams and organisations engaged in research in the relevant fields of science. Thus the successful candidates will be expected to use their prize to build active partnerships with other institutions. They will be required to participate in a scientific meeting to be organised by ECETOC in 2004 to present an account of the activities that were made possible by the award. Eligibility Candidates that are eligible for the ECETOC Science Award in 2003 will be: Aged 40 or less on January 1st, 2001 A resident of the EU, Norway, Switzerland or an EU accession country on January 1st 2001 Principal investigator/lead author of the best paper, published in a peer-reviewed journal in 2001 or 2002, in the prescribed field of science. Supported by their supervisor/head of department/professor to confirm their leading role in the published work Available to attend the ECETOC Science Awards ceremony in Brussels on the evening of May 19th 2003, to accept their prize from European Commissioner Philippe Busquin. Nominations procedure Nominations can be made directly by the candidates, by a sponsor from their institute or, indeed, by a sponsor from another organisation. Each nomination must be accompanied by: A copy of the publication on which the candidate is to be judged A comprehensive curriculum vitae including list of other publications A written statement from the supervisor/head of department or professor confirming that the candidate was the principal investigator for the published work. Nominations should be made using the attached form, which can also be found via the ECETOC Website http://www.ecetoc.org and should reach ECETOC no later than April 4th 2003. A panel comprising independent external scientists will judge the applications and the final decision will rest with the ECETOC Board of Directors. All candidates will be advised of the outcome of the competition by May 2nd, 2003.
