The Black Prince

The Black Prince and the English in Talence We are two students from Talence, in the Aquitaine region, at Victor Louis High School. During the Middle Ages, The Aquitaine region belonged to the English Kingdom (nowadays, its a French territory). There was a war between English and French people (which began in 1338 ) over the ownership of the Aquitaine region and some other territories. Nowadays, Englishs presence in the Aquitaine has a great impact on tourism. However, this part of Aquitaines history is definitely very large, so weve decided to focus our research on Talence, and the Black Princes presence.

I-A little bit part of history: In 1337, the Aquitaine region was an English province. Indeed, Edward III, king of Britain, belonged to the same family as the king of France, so he made up his mind to claim the French peoples throne. Consequently, as it was in the Middle Ages, a war began. Edward III sent his elder son, Prince Edward, nicknamed the Black Prince because of his armours colour, in Aquitaine, with some troops, in order to conquest new territories all around the province. The Black Prince was quite cruel and sanguinary. As soon as he turned sixteen, he fought with his father in the Crécys battle against Frenchs army (which was an English victory). Then, when he was twenty-five with the help of some English troops and mercenaries, he devastated and plundered more than five hundred villages in Languedoc, a hearby province. In 1356, Jean II, king of France, with the help of fifty thousand warriors, decided to fight against the Black Prince, in Poitier, whereas there was only ten thousand soldiers in Black Princes army. Prince Edward won and Jean II was captured. Finally, the Black Prince died in 1376 in England, one year before his father. II-Impact of Englishs presence on the Aquitaine region tourism: During the Englishs presence in Aquitaine, two castles were built: first in Talence and second in Lormont ( near to Bordeaux) in which Black Prince lived. The castle located in Lormont is in restored in order to create a restaurant or something like this. The other one, the castle of Brama is used as a conference room nowadays.
