The nuclear power station of Blayais

The atom power station of Blayais is situated near the town called Blaye, on the banks of the Garonne, between Bordeaux and Royan (South West of France). It uses cold water from the estuary of the Gironde, pumped by submarine piping. It has got 4 nuclear reactors, which were put in operation from 1981 to 1963. 1,550 persons work there. It produces electricity for all the region of Aquitaine. The power station was implanted there because there were not many houses and it doesn't cost lots of money to cool down the reactors because of the presence of the Garonne : the water can be pumped and washed up in this vast environment. But, like every atom power station, the station of the Blayais has its problems and its consequences. After the storm in 1999, this station had lots of problems. A big part of the buildings were inundated, with the machine which cools down the temperature inside the buildings, if there is an accident. And, of course :

it has consequences on the environment and the biodiversity, which are polluted !!! by the scraps and the smoke rejected by the station
