Brief The Edinburgh Tourism Bureau (ETB) wants to develop a mobile guide covering the old town of Edinburgh. The purpose is to help visitors find their way in the old town of Edinburgh and provide them with location based information. The project will open, perhaps, a new door for PDA: tourism. And it will permit, perhaps, the development of mobile applications multimedia. The overall aims of the application are: •

Create a mobile application easy to navigate and intuitive to use.

Demonstrate (once again) benefits of multimedia in tourism

Use new technologies to help people (to find information about all monuments, places, restaurants… easily).

The prototype will function under Windows XP and the final product under Windows CE for Pocket PC. Director 8.5 will be used as the main tool for development.

Initial Requirements Specification • Technical requirements: o Prototype (minimal configuration) : The application is designed to run on a PC (Windows 98, XP) or a MAC (OS 9) - resolution 800*600 - 15” screen Processor 400 Mhz - 128 Mo SDRam - CD-ROM - Sound card – Video support for MPEG1 - Headphones or speakers

o Final application (minimal configuration): It’s read with a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) under Windows CE Resolution 240*320 - 3.5” TFT screen - Processor 400 MHz 64 Mo SDRam

• Aims and Objectives of Application The purpose of this application is to help visitors find their way in the old town of Edinburgh and provide them with location based information. The overall aims of the application are: Ø Create a mobile application easy to navigate and intuitive to use. Ø Demonstrate (once again) benefits of multimedia in tourism. Ø Use new technologies to help people (to find information about all monuments, places, restaurants… easily). Ø Permit to user to visit the old town with his own tourist guide. Ø Reserve in a restaurant through Internet links. Ø View pictures, movies, information and hear sound about monuments… of the city thanks to a data base included. Ø Take photos and videos and send them by email. Ø Guide itself in the old city through an interactive map. Ø Promote Edinburgh through his monuments, its culture… Ø Promote PDA and mobile technology. Ø Learn while playing.

• Target Audience The target audience for the application is general public. These persons must know how to use PDA and must be major. But a notice for people who doesn’t know PDA will be distributed with the PDA.

• Context of use: o This application will be used in streets a nd monuments of the old town of Edinburgh. It will be rent at the ETB for visitors who need help to find their way, a restaurant or a museum… o Actually this is at the prototype stage. It will be in test in streets of the old town o In the future it could be operational in the entire city. And it could be sold in all cities of the world o A questionnaire to collect information about professional reviews and visitors, opinions : • Opinion of the application’s content and design • Facility of use • Utility of this o A reward for completing the questionnaire: a free tour in the old town with the first interactive tourist guide! o All information collected will be useful with an aim to improve the product

• Scope of Application 1. The application is an interactive visit limited to the old town streets for this prototype. 2. All navigational controls are used in a consistent manner throughout and use well established symbols (ex: “i” for information, “a tower of castle” for castles…). 3. All sections of the guide are interactive They contain: • 5 links for main menu: • 1 interactive button for exiting the presentation The first window (Home) contains: • 2 interactive button to zoom on the map • 4 interactive button for move on the map • 1 interactive map with many clickable area The second window (Search) contains: • Interactive links for information about castles, restaurants… • 1 scrollbar to navigate • 1 area to search where the user can write his search CO32004 – Multimedia Development Methods – Coursework 1 (Phase 1) Napier University -- 09/11/ 2004

All videos have buttons (play, pause, stop…) to control them and to allow user to digest information presented 5. All interactive windows display navigational controls that: • Return the user to main menu • Allow the user to exit the application

Design documentation • Creative Strategy General In creating this multimedia application, the needs of the target audience (information quickly, immediate access, clear and visible information) were been respected with creating a soft and clear design. Resources (video, narrator, and photo) are focused on mains sections because they represent the most important information. It is essential to capture the user’s interest when we want to pass information. Another important point is that the user has the total control of the visit. The visit is really interactive!

Colours Blue (remember Scotland flag) & Green (emphasizes blue) are complementary colours. These both colours are used with white to improve visibility.

Navigation controls Controls are designed clearly with pictures to help the user. He sees always the same buttons, that’s why he is never lost. Controls are intuitive, that’s what the user searches.

Balance of Page and Windows Screens are consistent throughout. They give to the user an impression of continuity. This is reinforced by the presence of the main menu buttons. The design attempts to create a sense of balance between content and the graphic aspect on the screen.
