Canadian culture has always been deeply rooted in Astral’s values and has defined its identity. Since their respective foundations in 1986 and 1996, the English and French-language programs of the Harold Greenberg Fund (Fund/Fonds) have played a key role in supporting the production of cinematographic and television works, and consequently the emergence of new talent. We have at heart the success of our artisans and today pursue with the same passion our objective of enabling today’s talent to shine on both the national and international cultural scenes. Once again this year, numerous projects have benefited from the financial support of the Fund/Fonds. In 2011-2012, they have invested the considerable sum of more than $3.6 million in 218 projects. Among these, many have distinguished themselves on both the national scene, notably with Goon by Michael Dowse and L’Affaire Dumont by Podz, and the international scene, particularly with David Cronenberg’s latest movie, Cosmopolis, in competition for the Palme d’or at the 2012 Cannes Festival, and Catimini, the first feature film by Nathalie Saint-Pierre, who won the Valois d’or at the Angoulême Festival. To date, the financial support provided by the Fund/Fonds amounts to $81 million, thus giving life to 3,725 projects. Astral is proud to have contributed to the launch of these numerous projects, which demonstrate the incomparable Canadian talent and genius in film.

Officer of the Order of Canada, Knight of the Ordre national du Québec and Knight of the French Legion of Honour, Harold Greenberg was born in Montreal on January 11, 1930. The eldest of eight children, he founded Angreen Photo, a photofinishing company, with his brothers Ian, Harvey and Sidney. It grew quickly and over the years evolved into Astral Communications, a prosperous corporation that would expand its operations into film technical services, film distribution and television programs, videocassette reproduction as well as pay-per-view and specialty television channels. Astral Communications, with Harold Greenberg as its president until his death in 1996, contributed to the funding, production and distribution of more than 100 feature films, including Maria Chapdelaine, In Praise of Older Women, Meatballs and the box office hit Porky’s. The FUND (Foundation to Underwrite New Drama) was created in April 1986 at the behest of Harold Greenberg, who felt there was a genuine demand for high-quality Canadian scripts but insufficient resources to fund their development. In 1996, following Mr. Greenberg’s death, the FUND was renamed the Harold Greenberg Fund (Fund), and a French-language fund, Fonds Harold Greenberg (Fonds), was created. Over the years, Fund and Fonds have provided financial support for Canadian producers through aid programs that fund:

- story optioning, script writing and production of short and feature films; - family-oriented programs and films; - documentaries; - special events; - music programs; - music videos; - training programs and industry events.

To date, the various sections of Fund and Fonds have supported more than 3,725 projects, representing an investment of more than $81 million in Canada’s film and television industry. We are proud to support the vision and the efforts of Canadians who have stories to tell.

MESSAGE FROM THE CO-CHAIR AND THE PRESIDENT AND MANAGING DIRECTOR

In 2012, Fonds Harold Greenberg’s French-language program resolutely pursued its mission to contribute to the development of original works for film and television, through its involvement in more than 90 projects. In total, nearly $1.5 million was invested in order to support the creation of distinctive films and programs that reflect our culture. In an economic climate where funding is increasingly limited, our various support programs for the development of feature films have become an essential tool for producers. We were delighted to see several of the films we supported shine on the national and the international scenes. Philippe Falardeau’s universally acclaimed Monsieur Lazhar garnered an Oscar nomination for best foreign-language film, Xavier Dolan’s amazing Laurence Anyway was among the films in competition in the Un certain regard section at the Cannes Festival. Nathalie Saint-Pierre took home the Valois d’Or at the Festival du film francophone d’Angoulême for her film Catimini. L’Affaire Dumont, by the talented filmmaker Podz, was presented at the opening of the 2012 Festival du cinéma de Québec. All of these success stories make us very proud of our filmmakers! Other films for which we provided development assistance are eagerly anticipated and should be in theatres soon. The Sébastien Pilote’s second film, Le démantèlement, is currently in production. His first film, Le Vendeur, in which Fonds was also involved, was applauded by critics and honoured at several international festivals. The first feature film by Yan Lanouette Turgeon, Roche Papier Ciseaux, was shot this summer with several top-tier actors. Fans of Quebec cinema will be delighted by the film’s unflinching approach.

This past year, Fonds also paid special attention to its division that funds music-related programs. It was a great honour for us to support Antonio Pierre de Almeida’s eagerly awaited Rapailler l’homme. This documentary paints a portrait of Gaston Miron, the man, through the eyes and hearts of those who knew him. The artists who took part in creating the album Douze hommes rapaillés were also involved in the film. For the past five years, Fonds has also funded the Autre Gala de l’ADISQ. Some 20 Félix awards were presented at this gala, which recognizes excellence in a variety of musical genres, from hip hop to classical, country, electronica and jazz. We are turning the page today on another eventful year for the French-language program of the Fonds Harold Greenberg. Astral Media’s ongoing support and confidence over all these years has been instrumental, as witnessed by the quality of our participation and the tangible vitality in our television and film community. Moreover, we would be remiss if we did not acknowledge the outstanding efforts made by our employees: thanks to them, our organization is highly respected in the community. Behind the numbers there are human beings, and it is because of their qualities as members of our team and our partners that we manage to excel in our field every year. We thank you all and wish everyone another year of exciting projects!

As they evolve into something resembling a family, Mateo, Big Max, Kevin and Dominique forget about the war being waged by the adults, seeking refuge instead in a makeshift camp near a pond with their children’s reflexes. They meet Gabriel, their young recruit, but sooner or later, the absurd reality of war catches up with them and leaves its mark. Arwad Productions l’unité centrale S/D: Samer Najari After his mother dies, Ali returns to Arwad, the island of his childhood, located off the coast of Syria, accompanied by his mistress, Marie. But their idyllic sojourn is soon shattered, when Ali drowns while swimming at night. Gabrielle, Ali’s wife, travels to Arwad to recover her husband’s body, but the wife and the lover never cross paths on the island. Back in Montreal, Marie shows up, uninvited, at a memorial organized by Gabrielle and her two daughters. The inevitable meeting of the two women does provide them an opportunity to grieve. Arwad explores loss, betrayal, escape and what it is like to be torn between different identities, in a drama that unfolds between two islands. Le Coq de St-Victor Productions 10e Ave inc. S/D: Pierre Greco In St-Victor, the mayor is convinced that his village’s prosperity is due to the discipline imposed by his rooster, who wakes the villagers every morning at four o’clock. And yet, after seven years of never getting to sleep in, not everyone shares his opinion. The rooster, who no longer feels appreciated, starts making trouble, crowing at all hours of the hour of the day and night, and the villagers call for a vote to decide the bird’s fate. The crafty mayor of a nearby village makes them a tempting offer, but life in the prosperous village is soon out of kilter. The villagers try everything to get their precious rooster back. A classic rural comedy and an ode to balance!

Gaby, who is almost pathologically protective in his paternal instincts, agrees to help his daughter. Fascinated by the trio’s ideas, Bernard gets increasingly caught up in their plans and even takes part in occupying a radio station in defense of Gaspé fishermen. Relations with the local authorities deteriorate, and following violent events, Bernard decides to return to Montreal with his newfound friends. The group joins the Front de libération du Québec (FLQ) and becomes one of the main players in the October Crisis.

The Fonds Harold Greenberg, established to fund French-language film and television productions, was created in September 1996. Its funding comes from two different sources. The first, dating from 2002, is funded by Super Écran and currently amounts to $700,000 annually, used to fund story optioning, script development and script polishing for feature films. The other, which dates from 2007 and totals $3.4 million over seven years, results from Astral Media’s acquisition of all shares of Musique Plus Inc. in accordance with the CRTC regulation applicable to transactions by broadcasters. It is used to finance the production of music-related programs. Since it was created, Fonds Harold Greenberg has contributed, thorough its various funding programs, to supporting 29 music programs, 14 special events, 186 scriptwriting programs, 80 story optioning projects, 22 polishing projects, 74 feature films, 80 documentaries, 12 drama programs for youth, 12 music-related programs and eight scriptwriting workshops, for a total investment of $17,551,703 in 517 film and television projects. MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR Fifteen years! In the music business, there’s not much that lasts 15 years. It was Walt Disney who said that in the entertainment world, a generation lasts only seven years. And yet, the MaxFACT Program is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. Fifteen years of involvement in the music community, reflected in the production of hundreds of videos and hours of musical enjoyment. MaxFACT has contributed to supporting original, creative scripts and high-quality performances that have drawn praise both at home and abroad. At a time of almost limitless choice in television programming, artists must continually strive to come up with innovative videos. To do so, our 15 years of involvement proves they can rely on MaxFACT to help them meet this challenge! The music video is still one of the most effective ways to promote artists and their music, and for this reason we have chosen to support it. Indeed, it is an essential tool for emerging artists. Over the past 15 years, we have awarded close to $6 million for 470 videos, supporting the work and careers of hundreds of singers, songwriters and performers. By stimulating our industry in this way, we are also helping all those who work on producing music videos. The benefits generated by each dollar invested are therefore significant—both in creating and maintaining jobs and in developing our culture. For those who must deal with increasingly narrow distribution channels, the music video simply enables them to exist.

ANNUAL REPORT

2011/2012

Ever since MaxFACT arrived on the scene, its team has continually fine-tuned its services to better support a dynamic industry, especially since coming under the umbrella of the Fonds Harold Greenberg. We are one of the only funding organizations in the music industry dedicated to videos, and under the circumstances, we have become an essential presence. Our experience, our expertise in the field and our professional collaboration in providing funding have made us a key partner for many artists. We will pursue our efforts in the years ahead and continue to maintain the artist as the focus of our concerns. Our aim is to stimulate local production by responding to our partners’ needs and, as a result, encouraging the expression of our culture. Once again this year, we have had a very positive year. We received 177 requests for funding and supported 48 videos in a broad range of genres—from hip hop to traditional folk, country folk, rock, pop and adult contemporary. Over the years, our efforts have been rewarded with the many prizes won by the artists we have worked with. Many of their videos were nominated or honoured by various industry organizations. Of particular note is the video by Vincent Vallières, On va s’aimer encore, the winner in the Video of the Year category at the most recent Gala de l’ADISQ. Karkwa’s video 28 jours was screened at the Festival de Namur in September. In conclusion, I would like to acknowledge the significant support we received from MusiquePlus and MusiMax. Without them, MaxFACT would not be MaxFACT. Their invaluable backing has allowed us to make a difference in the development of Quebec’s music industry. We are grateful for their support and the confidence they show us every day, especially with the recent renewal of their financial commitment for another five years. Heartfelt thanks as well to all members of the MaxFACT committee and to the administrative team at the Fonds Harold Greenberg for their dedicated professional support. Fifteen years is no mean feat! Let’s take a moment appreciate the road travelled thus far, and wish continued success to the MaxFACT Program.
